grahar64··on AI will make formal verification go mainstream
Won't people just use AI to define specification? Like if they are getting most of it done with AI, won't they won't read/test the code to verify won't they also not read the spec
grahar64··on Australia begins enforcing world-first teen social media ban
Social media is cigarettes. There are lots of studies showing the negative impacts to say that limiting their reach is probably good for society and individuals.

Just about all arguments against this are the same arguments that would stop governments limiting booze or tabaco

grahar64··on Personal blogs are back, should niche blogs be next?
My main advice for engineers is to write a blog. It isn't for anyone else it is to organize your thoughts. But should be presented in a way others can learn from. For a year I published every Tuesday morning, and that schedule made me learn so much so fast.
grahar64··on When did people favor composition over inheritance?
I once worked with a library that had such a deep inheritance tree, only for ontological purposes, that I was always confused as to where anything was actually implemented. I decided to squash the layers and found almost every method was overrode two or three times.

That was the project that I turned against inheritance, it was 2009, project was written in Java 1.4

grahar64··on Zohran Mamdani wins the New York mayoral race
Yes, everyone on insurance should be young and healthy. Fuck those sick people /s
grahar64··on The longest baseball game took 33 innings to win
The longest test cricket match lasted 11days and was called off because one team had to catch a boat home
grahar64··on Litestream v0.5.0
FUSE is such a cool idea but every application always suffers performance problems when stressed. I tried LiteFS and it worked, but litestream was awesome.
grahar64··on This map is not upside down
This is the correct map, but New Zealand should be in the center as we are middle earth
grahar64··on UC Berkeley gives personal information for 150 students and staff to government
What a weird "what about"ism.
grahar64··on UC Berkeley gives personal information for 150 students and staff to government
It is hard because they might be teaching global warming, or biology realities like intersex people exiting, or slavery was bad and it happened in the US, is seen as political by the some who are arguing to keep politics out of the classroom.
grahar64··on iPhone Air
Thin phone, giant screen. How bout thick phone, tiny screen. Call it iPhone Earth
grahar64··on Google will allow only apps from verified developers to be installed on Android
My son uses an android phone as a medical device with apps that are either downloaded or compiled. Hopefully this won't touch lineageOs
grahar64··on Why are anime catgirls blocking my access to the Linux kernel?
I write about something similar a while back https://maori.geek.nz/proof-of-human-2ee5b9a3fa28

About the difficulty of proving you are human especially when every test built has so much incentive to be broken. I don't think it will be solved, or could ever be solved.

grahar64··on UK drops demand for backdoor into Apple encryption
Or did they get what they want?
grahar64··on 95% of generative AI pilots at companies are failing – MIT report
5% success is actually way higher than I thought it would be. At that rate I suppose there will be actually profitable AI companies with VC subsidies
grahar64··on BBC Micro, ancestor to ARM
A BBC micro was my first computer. Americans had Amegas or something, but I had a BBC and a big book with example BASIC programs.
grahar64··on I want an iPhone Mini-sized Android phone (2022)
I wrote this post https://maori.geek.nz/small-light-robust-phones-for-a-type-1... that has a bunch of examples of small phones. The requirements are not exactly the same, but in the same boat as for want of good solid small phones.

I recommend the pixel 4a 5g with LineageOS installed, or the Q9 mini.

grahar64··on Git Notes: Git's coolest, most unloved feature (2022)
I tried using git notes for distributed secure reviews but hit some road block with merges. It is a good idea that has limitations that limit its adoption
grahar64··on Mark Zuckerberg Says Social Media Is Over
Write an algorithm to maximize in app time, so he ended up building a content media platform not a social one. If the goal is to show as many ads as possible, you will always end up with more media than social
grahar64··on The Insanity of Being a Software Engineer
I think most jobs are hard, but "grass is always greener" means we focus on what is hard in our job and easy in other jobs.
grahar64··on The Insanity of Being a Software Engineer
Specialization hasn't occurred because everything keeps changing and specialists become either stagnant, bored or unemployable.

The size of a brick was standardized in 1840, then 1970 for metric. Let's get that kind of stability in software before we start specializing

grahar64··on The blissful Zen of a good side project
I like to have side projects that end in a blog post. So many people never share side projects because they are going for perfection and give up on the way, but if the end result is not code or a product I find it more enjoyable to work on. Like have a vision of what you want to explore and focus on that.
grahar64··on U.S. national-security leaders included me in a group chat
Something I havnt seen discussed is that you can get the information from signal without compromising the phone or person. Just reading the texts "over the shoulder" would be enough of a leak. Being in Moscow is bad, but even a Starbucks has security cameras good enough to read text on a phone. A SCIF would fix that
grahar64··on Is it safe to travel to the United States with your phone?
Safety is not just physical violence. The threat of violence (including incarceration) is enough to make a place unsafe.
grahar64··on ‘Bluey’s World’: How a Cute Aussie Puppy Became a Juggernaut

grahar64··on Moving away from US cloud services
Problem with Hetzner is they don't have the self hosted DCs in pacific region yet. They have Singapore for their PaaS solution, but if you want those cheap second hand servers then have to be in EU
grahar64··on DeepSeek focuses on research over revenue
Isn't the big complaint that Silicon Valley doesn't focus on revenue. Like there was a pretty funny bit of the "Silicon Valley" show that was mocking this fact.
grahar64··on OpenAI asks White House for relief from state AI rules
Well funded companies want regulations because it stops up and coming companies from competing. Now they want exemptions from those regulations because it would be too restrictive.
grahar64··on The Demoralization is just Beginning
Pretty sure that the USA isnt "embracing socialism" when it is currently going through the largest cuts to social programs in history.
grahar64··on Yoke: Infrastructure as code, but actually
I was 100% for infra as code as it gives devs more freedom to get what they need. Then the startup went from 50 to 100 to 1000 and people just needed to get stuff done and usually the exact same thing over and over. So we migrated to a custom DSL which is much easier to standardize, lint, review and read. I think when you don't know what you need code is better for flexibility, when the domain is sorted, DSL.
