grag··on PhoneGap: Open Source Tool for Building 'Native' Mobile Apps (iPhone, Android) with Javascript
A bunch of phonegap apps have gotten in to the app store: http://phonegap.com/projects

Maybe that person just got unlucky and had a bad app tester.

grag··on Facebook "stream" redesign: Disruptive companies don't listen to their customers
#2 is not true. Stories posted automatically via the API won't show up in friend's newsfeeds. But apps can popup a "feed form" which allows users to preview the content the app wants to post to their wall (this can include an image or embedded swf). If the users posts it then that content will show up in all their friend's newsfeeds. I think this format is actually much better for apps.

grag··on Some Indie Facebook Developers Pulling In Over $700,000 A Month
I'm not sure how common it is for apps to be making that much, but I know one of the top apps is pulling in $5,000+ a day, and it's by an individual developer.

I was making around $150 a day from an app with 100,000 monthly active (90% were CPA ads with the rest being socialmedia), and there are a fair amount with over 5 million monthly.

grag··on The Story of My Startup.
I think this is a very promising idea.

I think the idea of an embeddable widget that flips through all your photos (like the videos you describe that inspired the site) would be really cool. I think if a widget like this is done right you could get some good viral growth from MySpace.

I'd think about capitalizing as much as possible on the timelapse concept and stray away from being just another photo sharing site. Right now, users profiles are just a feed of images, which doesn't seem that compelling..

grag··on Smart people are drunks
I think you've got it backwards. Since correlation is bidirectional then the reversal should NOT be meaningless.
grag··on Google To Take Chrome Out Of Beta
Just a guess, but they may feel that having the beta label on a downloadable app tends to turn people off, whereas people don't mind beta web apps (its the norm and they won't screw up your system).
grag··on InviteUp : Easiest Invite Ever
But what does the link do?

EDIT: Nevermind, I get it now. I think the idea has some promise, but I'd work on making things more clear on the main page.

Maybe have three small screenshots showing the process:

- An image of an email window with the link pasted in along with event info.

- An image of what someone sees when they click the link.

- And an image of the page where you view their responses.

It would also be cool if the invite link page included everyone's responses.

grag··on InviteUp : Easiest Invite Ever
Sorry, I don't understand what this is. There's no ability to add info to the invite page (like event info) so what are you inviting your friends to?
grag··on Ask HN: How do I get to that next level of traffic?
You could work on integrating with the twitter api. Look how much linkage blip.fm is getting on twitter: http://search.twitter.com/search?q=blip.fm
grag··on Ask HN: feedback on my startup?
Not sure I understand either. Is this website supposed to be a destination where users go to find good content / entertainment?
grag··on Window Pong
That's the point. You play pong with the moving windows that it creates. Nothing malicious here.
grag··on Ask HN: Who's Hiring?
Playlist.com is hiring developers. If your a talented PHP, Python or ActionScript programmer get in touch with me at gabe {at} playlist.com.

Take a look at our new website here: http://www.playlist.com/?home=a

grag··on Ask HN: Do you tell other people about HN?
I think an option to filter out (or just see) self-referential posts would be great. I actually like AskHN posts a lot, and an option to just see those posts would probably encourage people to post more.
grag··on Ask HN: Do social sites with karma need a decay function?
While you can probably improve a karma system with decay or a more complicated algorithm, there's something to be said for having a system simple that your users understand. I'd make a wild guess that karma wouldn't be as interesting to users if they can't figure out how their actions directly affect their score.
grag··on FeedbackArmy.com - simple, cheap usability testing for your site
Anyone know if this uses Amazon Mechanical Turk?
grag··on Ask HN: On building a Social News site and its tools for moderation
I interviewed a bunch of reddit users for my senior thesis. One thing I found was that the karma system really encouraged participation (not too surprising but worth considering if your building a social news site).

Check out http://www.thesixtyone.com. It's a great example of how you can instill a social media site with a really fun, game-like quality. Not sure if you want to go in that direction, but still worth checking out.

As far as spamming and moderation, I wouldn't worry about it too much if your just getting started. I probably wouldn't even do email validation to begin with since you want the barrier to be low when your trying to attract your first users. You can always add that stuff later when the need arises.

grag··on Tough times in Silicon Valley, but some hiring
Playlist.com is hiring for a bunch of positions. If anyone is interested feel free to send me an email.
grag··on Ticketstumbler (YC summer 08) "growing 50 percent a month"
In the interview you mentioned that your monthly burn rate was “in the low four figures". Does that include salaries for your team? Just curious what your cost breakdown is, how much of that goes towards servers, etc (if you don't mind revealing that).
grag··on Ask HN: Review our app, Muspy (new album notification service)
I think it would make sense to allow people to use your app (start building a list of artists) before registering. Just store their list to a cookie and show a little notification that tells them to enter their email and a password to save their artist list and start receiving notifications.
grag··on Ning keeps growing. Over half million networks now.
Some good points, but I'm not sure network duplication is really an issue here. If 100 people want to try to create an entrepreneur network and see if they can get a real user base going then that's fine. I doubt many users find networks to join by browsing through them on ning.com anyway, but instead probably come across them from elsewhere online. In that sense ning is somewhat similar to a hosted blogging platform. It obviously wouldn't make sense for blogger.com to try to merge similar blogs...
grag··on Ask YC: Feedback on our startup/application
I think halo's critique is pretty much correct. You've done a good job with the site, but I just can't see it gaining any traction against ebay, craigslist, etc.. in it's current form. You've got a lot of nice features, but consider stripping the site down a bit and focusing on a specific niche or interesting concept that is easy to convey. For instance, what if the site was entirely focused on submitting things you want and submitting things you have and it automatically matched up buyers and sellers. Not saying that's a great idea, but it's one example of how you could take one of your concepts and focus on it entirely to begin with. Then as people start to use it you can expand your site and start adding in the other pieces. Anyway, that's what I would consider doing if I were in your shoes. Also, like matt1 said, usability testing and focus groups would be a good idea.
grag··on Ask YC: Review my app (Panoye)
One minor suggestion: Would it be that hard to allow me to click and drag the panoramas without having to click that hand button first?
grag··on Shinmun, a small and beautiful blog engine
js-kit's comments addon would work if you don't care about having accounts. It's very customizable.
grag··on HN: feedback on my image bookmarking website
Thanks for the feedback. I may allow users to edit titles once I figure out the best interaction flow for that. As far as filtering goes, right now I probably won't do much, but I may eventually break the home page up into "recently popular" and "new" sections.
grag··on HN: feedback on my image bookmarking website
Thanks, just added that to the bookmarklet!
grag··on HN: feedback on my image bookmarking website
I agree, I will be adding a box on the homepage that gives new users an idea of what the site is all about and displays the bookmarklet. Thanks for the feedback!
grag··on HN: feedback on my image bookmarking website
samataro: I'm working full time and using laconica was simply the quickest way to get from the idea stage to up and running. If imgfave take off I'll most likely rewrite it from scratch.
grag··on HN: feedback on my image bookmarking website
Yeah, that will be one of the next things I add. Thanks for checking it out!
grag··on HN: feedback on my image bookmarking website
Weird, that shouldn't be happening. I'll fix that today.
