gozur88··on Why a ‘paperless world’ still hasn’t happened
Estonia must be a veritable progressive paradise.

For thieves.

I don't find the time argument very compelling. It takes just a minute or two to boil water, you throw in the rice, and simmer for another twenty. Sure, it takes twenty two minutes, but twenty of those are just waiting. Normally I start the rice and then prepare the rest of the meal while it's simmering. Maybe 20-30 minutes for the whole meal.

Time-wise fast food isn't as efficient as it would seem at first glance. If you go during a normal meal time (which you pretty much have to do if you have kids), between travel time and waiting at the register, it's going to end up taking as long as a home cooked meal.

gozur88··on Why a ‘paperless world’ still hasn’t happened
There seemed to be a movement in that direction a few years back, but I haven't seen anything in awhile.
gozur88··on Legal Marijuana Isn’t the Boon Small Businesses Thought It Would Be
>Some heavy users care about certain strains and the like, but I have a feeling that for most people weed is weed.

I'd be surprised if that's the case, and even if it's the case in the beginning, I'd be surprised if it's still the case after a few years.

>We don't send documents via fax or courier, we send them digitally.

We still send messages via fax, because a document you sign and send by email isn't a legally signed document, wheras a fax is. I had to print out a PDF, sign it, and and fax it a week ago for this reason.

gozur88··on Why hasn't economic progress lowered work hours more? (2016) [video]
By "not everywhere" you mean... Massachusetts? Benefits like paid sick leave are rounding errors compared to health care.
gozur88··on Why hasn't economic progress lowered work hours more? (2016) [video]
What are you citing? There's nothing in that article about hours or benefits that accrue to FTEs only. Did you even read it?
gozur88··on Why hasn't economic progress lowered work hours more? (2016) [video]
Not in the US. Prior to the ACA there was no requirement to give FTEs health care.
gozur88··on Why hasn't economic progress lowered work hours more? (2016) [video]
I don't see how Surplus Value applies here. From Marx's theoretical standpoint 100 people working 1 hour is the same as 1 person working 100 hours.

In the real world there's nothing mysterious about employers preferring to get as many hours out of employees as possible. There are fixed costs per FTE that don't scale with the number of hours worked - everything from training to health care to the size of the parking lot.

gozur88··on Why hasn't economic progress lowered work hours more? (2016) [video]
>Retailers have taken it to another level by requiring you to commit to availability without a commitment to have work. Nobody gets 40 hours — you target around 28 typically.

This is the law of unintended consequences as applied to the ACA. If they give you more hours care their costs go up dramatically unless they're already offering health.

Tasteful, healthy food doesn't take that much effort, but you do have to know a little bit about cooking.
gozur88··on Earthworms can reproduce in Mars soil simulant
Plants are pretty tolerant of solar radiation. Far more so than humans.

In any event, what you'd probably do is use reflected light to filter out high energy particles.

gozur88··on Earthworms can reproduce in Mars soil simulant
The atmosphere of Mars contains nitrogen. It could be extracted and concentrated to provide the same percentage as earth's.

Man: Is that my wallet in your hand?

Sane Man: No sir. That's my mobile phone.

Man: That is my wallet. I can see my ID!

Sane Man: You need help.

> Better to have the public believe that you're super territorial and will react violently to the slightest provocation.

That's how you end up fighting wars nobody wanted. If you threaten Armageddon over every little thing and then don't deliver, nobody is going to take you seriously when you're, well, serious.

I'm convinced that's how the US ended up bombing Serbia - the Clinton administration tried to buy a little cheap grace by threatening the Serbs, thinking Milosevic would knuckle under and that would be that. But they were ignored. More threats followed and were also ignored. At some point Clinton had to do something or nobody on the planet was ever going to believe he had the backbone to carry out a threat.

gozur88··on Russian submarine activity increases around Atlantic internet cables: report
You're just backing up his point about Russia.
gozur88··on Russian submarine activity increases around Atlantic internet cables: report
It could also be encrypted at the cable endpoints, denying a snooper even the stuff that's normally unencrypted.

Might be worth the cost, too, since then there's no reason for people to cut your cables.

I thought those George Foreman grills were a gimmick (come on, they were selling it on informercials!), but a buddy of mine bought one and he swears by it.

>Lee also notes in her study that, on closer inspection, food deserts don’t actually exist in the U.S., at least not as a national problem—on average, poor neighborhoods have more grocery stores than wealthier neighborhoods.

A pound of uncooked white rice is $0.69, and it has 1696 calories, which works out to 24.6 calories per penny. That's about 19x better by your metric.

It's cheaper to buy fresh food than junk food. If you're buying junk food it's because you don't have a place to cook or you're too lazy to cook.
gozur88··on Kids in ‘Netflix Only’ Homes Saved from 230 Hours of Commercials a Year
Yeah, that's true. I enjoy a bit of SpaceChem, but I think it would be better for non-programmers and for discovering kids who had the aptitude.
gozur88··on Kids in ‘Netflix Only’ Homes Saved from 230 Hours of Commercials a Year
The first time my nephew watched broadcast television he told us the television was broken and asked us to fix it.

"Really can't disagree with you there, kid."

gozur88··on Kids in ‘Netflix Only’ Homes Saved from 230 Hours of Commercials a Year
The line gets fuzzy when scenes are added to the show purely for product placement. In my mind that's an ad.
gozur88··on Kids in ‘Netflix Only’ Homes Saved from 230 Hours of Commercials a Year
Is that still true? My parents must have over a hundred channels.
gozur88··on Kids in ‘Netflix Only’ Homes Saved from 230 Hours of Commercials a Year
If you step back a bit from that game you realize it's tickling the same mental circuits you use in programming. If I had kids I'd definitely try to get them interested.

SpaceChem even more so.

gozur88··on “Username or password is incorrect” is bullshit
That works for the email, but not the user name. Going through the entire process and then telling the new user "That one's already taken, please start over" is not going to make people happy.

gozur88··on What Would It Take to Fix New York’s Subway?
Pension spiking happens everywhere. Here in California we had a retired fire chief drawing a $400k pension because he basically worked around the clock the year he retired.
gozur88··on What Would It Take to Fix New York’s Subway?
>So unless that counts something other than the hourly employees, or counts pension contributions as salary (in which case it is just an argument against pensions), I have a hard time believing it.

Usually if the figure includes benefits (as it does in this case) the pension contributions are included. Along with things like medical, life, and disability insurance.

Usually when you total everything up it comes to around twice what people get paid. I worked at a place with federal civil servants, and the total cost to the government for a civil servant was costed out at 2.2x salary.
