gouda-gouda··on Rust 2024 the Year of Everywhere?
This is the right take. Nikos vision is about polishing what’s already refinement, polishing what’s already there.
gouda-gouda··on Rust 2024 the Year of Everywhere?
Rust definitely has a mixture of runtime and static checks (Rc, RefCell, Arc, etc)
gouda-gouda··on What will you do with the stories entrusted to you?
The most important shift I’ve made in my life was when I started approaching conversations with the attitude that the other person could teach me something, no matter who it is. Sometimes it takes some digging, but I’ve found it to be true.
gouda-gouda··on GitHub Copilot is generally available
After using Copilot with Rust for a few months, I’m constantly impressed with how accurate it can be. Sometimes I catch myself pausing to think about the solution, then all of the sudden copilot just writes the implementation for me.

Having a type checker is critical for this, though. When I code Ruby I’m much more skeptical of Copilots suggestions.

gouda-gouda··on Sorbet: Stripe's Type Checker for Ruby
Sorbet is sooo close to being idiomatic in Ruby. With some support for duck typing and roughing out edges around memoization / ivars, I could see it being adopted into Ruby proper.
gouda-gouda··on Ruby 3.1
Thank you Matz and team! Lot of awesome stuff in this release.
gouda-gouda··on YouTube TV loses ESPN, ABC and other Disney channels in fee dispute
I feel like YoutubeTV forgot that at the end of the day, I’m paying them for content, not their cute little app. Left them last year when they lost my MLB team and haven’t really looked back.
gouda-gouda··on New Concerning Variant: B.1.1.529
I believe this has been more eloquently described as: “ignorance is bliss.”
gouda-gouda··on How to build a search engine with Ruby on Rails
Ruby is alive and well. We don’t use Rails specifically (Hanami + ROM.rb + DRY.rb), but absolutely love Ruby as a language and the ecosystem surrounding it. It’s productive, and as powerful as you need it to be.

When it comes to building feature-rich web applications quickly and sanely, Ruby is still hard to beat IMO.

gouda-gouda··on HTTP/2-exclusive threats caused by implementation flaws and RFC imperfections
That JIRA exploit is mind-boggling bad. Posts like this remind me that we work on a house cards, not a fortress.
gouda-gouda··on Jeff Bezos’ Dystopian Legacy Goes Far Beyond Amazon
Do you actually think small and medium sized businesses can really compete with Amazon at this point? Their advantage at this point, technologically and operationally, is far more than simply lower tax burden.
gouda-gouda··on Jeff Bezos’ Dystopian Legacy Goes Far Beyond Amazon
If you consider America to be a corporatocracy, it’s hard not to consider it to be an authoritarian state at this point.

The company I work at recently had everyone install some advanced monitoring software on every company’s laptop. Being fully remote, this effectively gives root access to someone in my home 8 hours a day. Sure, it’s a “company laptop” and all of that, but something feels extremely invasive about it and I don’t like it one bit.
