gotosleep··on Facebook senior software engineer interview
"if you did get hired for this role and managed to keep it, you'll be a master at this stuff within a couple of years." I wholeheartedly disagree. I have a total of 14 years of experience. I've been at Google for the past 6 years. I'm an L5 (Senior Engineer) and I get good performance reviews. I interview candidates on a fairly regular basis on behalf of Google. I am fully confident that if I had to re-interview for my job today, without extensive pre-prep like the author suggests, I would have a very slim chance of passing. The fact is, these algorithm quizzes have nothing at all to do with our job. On the off chance once ever 5 years you actually do need to apply an algorithm, you would do extensive study into the possible options and solutions, write a design doc, have it peer reviewed, and then go down that path - not pull something out of your ass in 15 minutes.
gotosleep··on Welcome Jared
Congrats Jared, this is amazing news!
gotosleep··on Z Launcher
If you guys want an alternative, check out my app launcher: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.iojess.con...

I've been working on it off & on for 2ish years. It doesn't use gestures for searching, but personally I prefer typing on a keyboard. It also learns what you want to do based on time and day. One benefit of my approach: it isn't trying to be a home screen replacement, so you can use it with any launcher you wish.

gotosleep··on Patent trolls put brakes on S.F. transit app
Intellectual property should be taxed. If a company is sitting on a patent waiting for someone to violate it so they can sue for $X amount, the company should be taxed for $X amount of property. It would make owning tons of patents and doing nothing with them practically infeasible.
gotosleep··on Show HN: Filmgrain, a realtime movie + Twitter app
It's beautiful, well made, and useful. Nicely done.
gotosleep··on Ask HN: Did you get Google IO 2013 Ticket? If so at what time PDT?
And now my transaction shows up as cancelled by Google. Fuck you Google, fuck you Google Wallet.
gotosleep··on Ask HN: Did you get Google IO 2013 Ticket? If so at what time PDT?
I have a pending charge of $900 in my Google wallet transaction history but no confirmation. It timed out while I was making the purchase, so still not sure.
gotosleep··on Why are jokes funny?
Information is funny if, when revealed to us, it is either obviously true or obviously false.
gotosleep··on Show HN: Conjure - A launcher for Android
A little late, but I made a webpage that goes over the features and provides a pretty comprehensive demo: http://c.onjure.com

I plan on supporting that in the near future. Thanks for checking out the app!

Interesting, I hadn't heard of Quickdroid until now. I just tried it out and it is pretty good, but I still think Conjure is better.

Here are a few things Conjure can do that Quickdroid can't: - Abbreviations. Searching for "gv" in Conjure produces the google voice app, in Quickdroid nothing - Toggles, Conjure provides access to a bunch of different toggles - Volume, Conjure provides access to all the volume controls

There are a few features in Quickdroid that I like which Conjure doesn't have, namely the Quick Launch feature. I'll be adding that ASAP.

No, it doesn't. It's a launcher more in the vein of Alfred for OSX, Gnome-Do for Linux, or Launchy for Windows.

Good point, I'll fix this in the next release. Thanks for the suggestion!

Conjure actually learns from your selections. So, if you search for gmail & then tap the Gmail app, it should be the first result the next time you make the same search.

Glad to save you from a switch to iPhone! Yeah, the Google offerings just don't do what I want in a launcher app. I feel like I did something right because I ended up using the app all the time; it's pretty much my interface for my phone at this point.
gotosleep··on Android App: Text Actions, for doing things as fast as possible.
Yep, you are totally right. Making TA learn is high on my priority list - probably the next big feature I will release. One thing that could help in the meantime: if your contacts have last names, you can provide that to narrow down the search. Also, you can provide phone type. If you had "Anna A", "Anna B", and "Anna C", you could for example type something like "c a b m" to "call anna b mobile".

Awesome, excited to hear what you think, good or bad.
