gosub100··on Why media fans want to escape algorithms with CDs, DVDs and vinyl
That gives me an idea: a "CD player" that accepts the entire jewel case and has a camera inside that reads the barcode, retrieves the album, and plays it.
gosub100··on Burning Man death rates – A short lesson in statistics
Also, car accidents are probably in the top 5 causes of death for that demographic. And there's almost no driving at BM. But lots of driving to and from, so perhaps that smooths out the curve while keeping deaths off the event?
gosub100··on I could've accessed 17T Microsoft records
Explain why easily 40% of HN posts are about AI, and when people actually _use_ AI for this task, they are vilified for (allegedly) using it.

gosub100··on NASA asked several former SR-71A staffers to help secret restart
You forgot lasers
gosub100··on DraftKings Is Using AI to Behaviorally Target Chronic Gamblers
And the legal option makes it less likely that organized crime will jump in to offer the service.

(To me, it seems) The same people who screamed to legalize weed a few years ago are vehemently against alcohol and gambling.

gosub100··on Updated Google Maps shows destruction of the city of Rafah
Bibi was aware of the plans, and allowed the attack to manufacture support for the greater Israel project.
gosub100··on Does Reddit have an astroturfing problem? What the data suggests
> One of the reasons is that posting a few short words wins in upvotes because they get posted first

It's not being first to the race, it's that some people are lazy and don't want to read "long" posts but will optimize for snappy quips that are more likely to be upvoted. This incentives some "karma whores" to make these posts instead of engaging with the topic more.

gosub100··on N.Y.P.D. Officers Used Flock Safety to Track License Plates Without a Contract
Paying that fee would absolutely be worth it in a costly divorce if it prevented someone from paying out.

I'm assuming flock have some sort of legal protection that gets them out of that for regular plebs. Otherwise people would hate them even more knowing they were used for people's personal matters.

gosub100··on N.Y.P.D. Officers Used Flock Safety to Track License Plates Without a Contract
How does their business model work with subpoenas? If the police don't pay to use them, but the camera witnesses a crime, can't they get a judge to order the video because it's evidence in a criminal investigation and/or trial?

What about a civil case? Can an individual get a court order for flock to release evidence that it may have (or definitely has) relevant to a divorce case or other lawsuit?

They evade accusations of constitutional violation because they're a private company. But other private companies have to turn over records all the time (credit card purchases for example).

> we spend ~$50 Billion (arguably much more)

Thanks to the 2nd most hated man alive, it doesn't cost nearly this much to get to space anymore.

gosub100··on How I changed teaching after AI managed to do all my homework assignments
Then their parents come in and complain about where the $30k that semester went. This is a consequence of the exponential rise in tuition. You're now in lawsuit territory if you don't deliver the goods.
gosub100··on How I changed teaching after AI managed to do all my homework assignments
In most colleges, if too many students fail the course, the instructor is blamed. So you cannot optimize solely on catching AI cheaters.
gosub100··on ASML says it sold 'absolutely nothing' in Europe in 2026
with generations of parents forcing thier children to either be doctors or engineers, I would have expected India to lead the world in both of those categories.
gosub100··on Feds Target AI Critics as "Foreign Agents"
how are they required at all? why can't a company publish its products and services on its website and customers can take it or leave it? why do we need commission-paid schmoozers in-between, who make multiples of what rank-and-file workers earn? The workers create value, and are paid the least. That's the definition of perversion.

gosub100··on Solitaire Alone Together
Can't remember if I saw it on HN or searched for it, but you can search for the hardest solvable freecell games. I drove myself partially insane trying to solve one. Only got about halfway before I caved

Those symptoms wouldn't be listed if they weren't clinically validated. Unless you think you know better than the doctors who wrote the book on it (wouldn't surprise me at all if you did).
gosub100··on What happened to the Snowden archive
You haven't shown any EVIDENCE why someone who had done nothing wrong would commit suicide. Someone who has hundreds of millions to fund a legal defense, quit before even trying to win in court. You are projecting the very thing you claim against others (lack evidence).
gosub100··on How do traffic signals work? (2019)
Red lights also regulate speed, although I don't know if they are intentionally de-optimized from green for this reason.

gosub100··on Disney+: New user agreement allows ads before movies in all subscriptions
I'm sure somewhere there's an ad exec ready to rollout personalized in-game ads that say "hey Chris Morgan, try Henson's ball wash!" From data provided by your smart TV and your secret profile from data brokers.
gosub100··on What happened to the Snowden archive
The blackmail theory explains:

- why congress itself voted to cover it up

- why there are these bizarre humiliation rituals like the FBI saying beastiality will not DQ you from working for the agency (some top FBI person likely screwed up something related to mossad and were forced to humiliate their agency).

- why the UFC thing happened on the Whitehouse. That's a caricature of our culture, like if we wanted to humiliate mexico by making them have a Mariachi festival or something.

gosub100··on What happened to the Snowden archive
So why was he arrested in 2008 if there was no evidence? And again in 2019? And why would he hang himself if there was no evidence against him? That's a wild conspiracy theory you have, bud.
