gosub100··on Disney+: New user agreement allows ads before movies in all subscriptions
I'm sure somewhere there's an ad exec ready to rollout personalized in-game ads that say "hey Chris Morgan, try Henson's ball wash!" From data provided by your smart TV and your secret profile from data brokers.
gosub100··on What happened to the Snowden archive
The blackmail theory explains:

- why congress itself voted to cover it up

- why there are these bizarre humiliation rituals like the FBI saying beastiality will not DQ you from working for the agency (some top FBI person likely screwed up something related to mossad and were forced to humiliate their agency).

- why the UFC thing happened on the Whitehouse. That's a caricature of our culture, like if we wanted to humiliate mexico by making them have a Mariachi festival or something.

gosub100··on What happened to the Snowden archive
So why was he arrested in 2008 if there was no evidence? And again in 2019? And why would he hang himself if there was no evidence against him? That's a wild conspiracy theory you have, bud.

gosub100··on Small programming tricks
Another one, not quite as handy but still awesome: ctrl s / ctrl-q. This freezes/unfreezes the terminal output so you can read it, without interrupting your program. Useful for very fast walls of text.
gosub100··on Original Sony PlayStation 2 security chip 'broken wide open' after 26 years
A careless move with a skill saw can take your finger off too. I don't think acid deserves such a scary reputation. I guess because it doesn't make an obnoxious sound does make it easier to forget. But in both cases you must follow best practices (fume hood, goggles, bicarb wash nearby) , and suffer consequences if you don't.
gosub100··on PS5 Linux lead quits: "a bunch of noobs using LLMs" that "they don't understand"
I say it's only because LLMs came out after the PS5 was developed. Presumably, future generations of hw (if there are any) will use the same methods to harden the attack surface. Good ole cat and mouse.
gosub100··on Recreating Voodoo Graphics and a Late-1990s Gaming PC on an FPGA
I did something similar with a U2W 160 mbps SCSI card and 10k rpm Seagate Cheetah drive circa 2000. I saved up and found an amazing deal on eBay, shipped to the US from Australia. Waited a week, plugged it in, and found out it had no boot ROM. So it worked, but I still had to boot from an IDE disk which ruined my whole vision for the build. I was so disappointed.

gosub100··on New $100k H-1B visa fee pushes tech jobs offshore
yes, it's called ABET Accreditation

Thats literally the point of getting a degree, to determine that all grads meet a set of minimum qualifications

gosub100··on New $100k H-1B visa fee pushes tech jobs offshore
Thet should pay into a tax fund that is applied toward student loans of American grads who are unemployed.
gosub100··on New $100k H-1B visa fee pushes tech jobs offshore
There is no need for "temporary talent" from foreign countries. US is graduating plenty of CS grads from our schools. There is a need for wage suppression and exploitation (for anyone not aware, if you get fired from your H1B job you have 2 weeks to leave the county). That's why they have a reputation for being "better", another word for it is indentured servitude.

gosub100··on I've factored the RSA keys of a Certificate Authority from the 90s
Check out the ROCA attack:

www.techtarget.com/cybersecurity/tip/The-ROCA-vulnerability-How-it-works-and-what-to-do-about-it%3famp=1

In practice it was confined to specific TPM modules, but in principle it shows how one flaw in the RNG can jeopardize the whole system.

I also remember seeing a similar vuln in certificates where an attacker _generated_ millions of certs and was able to somehow get the private cert by trying every possible seed for the RNG. (Like seeding every second from 2003-2011 for example, then generating a cert with it). I know I'm getting major parts of this wrong but it conveys the general idea.

gosub100··on Ask HN: Resources to get good at soldering?
These tips are not complete, but just the problem areas that I think noobs get stuck on:

- understand that different tasks require different amounts of heat. The reason a task is difficult or you ruined a board could be due to your iron not getting hot enough or too hot (traces come up).

- use flux, as others have said

- have proper ventilation, even for lead-free systems, there are plenty of other toxins you are likely exposing yourself to - straight into your lungs - if you solder in an unventilated area. Dont think "it wont happen to me".

- wear eye protection. tiny little beads of molten metal can and do fly up in random directions, especially when soldering wires.

- if you burn yourself, hold the affected area under cold water for 20-40seconds, way longer than you think is necessary. burns keep burning after the heat source is removed.

- get a good soldering iron if you are serious about doing it a lot. I am no expert, but I used a Metcal MX-500 for years. If you can afford it, do it. It was the cadillac of soldering irons. Don't get a $30 RadioShack model and wonder why you can't solder tiny SMT joints.

- get a bright spotlight for doing fine work. to me, the light was more important than magnification. the magnifying glasses just got in the way, and stereo microscopes are probably too expensive for you/most of us.

why? google removed don't be evil off their charter a long time ago. why shouldn't security researchers also seek to maximize profits?

gosub100··on I co-founded Burning Man. The festival has lost its soul
It's probably a liability from the nudity. Someone says "that's me! I didn't consent to my naked body being posted on the Internet!". Even if it was incidental, but if it was allowed, it would bring about a bunch of perverts a-la "girls done wild: burning man '26".
