gorkemyurt··on Walkable Streets Are More Economically Productive
The better formula is 'no empty walls'. Vancouver does this. Retail doesn't fit in every single location when that's the case ground floor is replaced by street level townhouse style entrances to individual units..
gorkemyurt··on In Blow to Tech Industry, Trump Shelves Startup Immigrant Rule
You can already pay $500k for an EB-5 visa and get a green card. I dont know why anyone would lie to the US government and pay $250k just to be able to stay in the country.
gorkemyurt··on What It Costs to Open a Restaurant in San Francisco
He doesnt even have a full bar, that would have been another 300k for the full bar alcohol license.. Restaurant looks amazing, just the right location. I think he is going to make a killing.
gorkemyurt··on Bleecker Street’s Swerve from Luxe Shops to Vacant Stores
San Francisco commercial corridors do not allow chain retailers as a measure to preserve neigboorhood character. As a side effect this somewhat keeps the rent down. One of the few examples where over regulating a market kind of works well..
gorkemyurt··on A new report on a basic income scheme launched in Iran
Very few homeless people in Iran as people can always return back to their 'village' if they don't make it in the city. There will be relatives helping them out and land more or less costs nothing.
gorkemyurt··on A new report on a basic income scheme launched in Iran
I agree. Milton Friedman says; "Instead of giving non-cash benefits like food stamps, housing vouchers and education we should calculate how much those benefits cost per person distribute that to people as negative income tax." Government spends tons of resources running these programs and leads to corruption and unfair distribution for a lucky few, "bucket is leaking". Every single UBI proposal/experiment I have seen keeps all the benefits and then adds an extra basic income payment, which works fine in a small experiment but quickly becomes unaffordable if you scale it to the whole country.
gorkemyurt··on Status – A Mobile Ethereum OS
Is the intention here to run mini react-native apps (Dapps?) within a bigger app (status app itself)?
gorkemyurt··on San Fran is so expensive, some tech companies can't convince employees to move
I agree with you, I would never consider living in a car centric American city. New York is my favorite American city (just as expensive) and I am lucky that lived there before moving to SF. Maybe I will move back one day but for now I am enjoying SF.
gorkemyurt··on San Fran is so expensive, some tech companies can't convince employees to move
People have different lifestyles and they should choose where they move according to that. Lots of people move to SF from smaller cities and expect to continue living a suburban life.
gorkemyurt··on React v15.5.0
Douglas Crockford might have some answers for you; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PSGEjv3Tqo0.. It makes the developer favor inheritance over composition.
gorkemyurt··on Visual Studio Code 1.10
I spent yesterday using VSCode and flow I can say that flow plugin is just as good as Nuclide.
gorkemyurt··on Visual Studio Code 1.10
Only reason I am still using Atom is flow support that comes with Nuclide. I know VS code has a couple flow plugins as well.. Can anyone compare Atom's flow support with VScode?
gorkemyurt··on As France’s Towns Wither, Fears of a Decline in ‘Frenchness’
Took a trip to the Provence region last summer and a bookstore in a small town called Banon caught my attention. Anyone visiting the region should stop by Banon and visit this bookstore. I don't think all of San Francisco has a bookstore of this quality.

gorkemyurt··on A Low-Cost Solution to Traffic
No I wasn't trying to be sarcastic, I really think its a good idea. San Francisco is not like any other typical American city, any big singer/artist on tour will come to San Francisco and this will be the only big event arena in the City. Owners are expecting 200 events/year.. That's a lot days when the streets of mission bay will be filled with 20k people.
gorkemyurt··on A Low-Cost Solution to Traffic
Yea that's why building the warriors stadium there was a great idea, it will bring the much needed foot traffic during games or concerts for more business to open up.
gorkemyurt··on Vancouver house prices are falling
how much are the property taxes in vancouver? I know in San Francisco its around 1.15%. A 1M condo pays, 15k in property taxes a year. So vancouver just increased this 15k by 2.25k and made it 17.25k? This seems negligible.. A 20% increase in business class plane tickets from China would have a bigger effect than this..
gorkemyurt··on Amazon Prime’s latest perk is a new Rewards Visa Card with 5% back
depends on how you use your credit card. You can get the 5% cash back and if pay everything in full on time you shouldn't even care about the interest rate.
gorkemyurt··on Plan to restrict highly skilled foreign workers could be a boon for India
Current System prioritizes people from India. From my personal experience (also see the article below[1]) people coming to the US for undergrad education usually end up in good universities.. Probably a small portion of them are going to below average private schools because their families are rich. They usually don't study STEM or they can't find jobs after graduation, you need a job first to apply for an H1B.

gorkemyurt··on Plan to restrict highly skilled foreign workers could be a boon for India
No no they are not out.. just give them priority over literally any college in the world. By no means ideal, if it was up to me I would allow all forms of immigration (maybe in return of a small social safety net fee) just trying to brainstorm easy improvements to the current system.
gorkemyurt··on Plan to restrict highly skilled foreign workers could be a boon for India
4 year STEM degree from an american university seems like a good place to start.. its not enough but better than a fake or real engineering degree from somewhere else.

Because how the lottery is structured, anyone who went to an american college for undergrad (4 years) plus two years of OPT, has lower chances than someone who just did a masters degree in an american university (1 year), and equal chances with anyone else in the world.

Anyone who spent first 6 years of their adult life in the US is much more likely to adjust to the american lifestyle than than anyone else.

gorkemyurt··on Plan to restrict highly skilled foreign workers could be a boon for India
a stanford undergrad needs to apply for H1-B as well.. which is ridiculous
gorkemyurt··on Estimated losses would make Snapchat the most unprofitable social media IPO
Recent graduate here. Facebook still rules college campuses.. Facebook events are incredibly useful.
gorkemyurt··on China approves $36B railway plan for Jing-Jin-Ji megacity
Can anyone explain how US policy makers justify the US military spending? Is it just about creating jobs? So why not build trains hospitals schools with that money? Is it just because the defense industry lobbies the shit out of US politicians? Surely our new mega rich class have the resources to lobby against this.
gorkemyurt··on Vancouver plans to tax empty properties 1% of their assessed value
you might as well actually rent it out at that point..
gorkemyurt··on Why I'm Not a React Native Developer
Ability to update your app over the wire with React Native is a massive advantage overlooked in the article. (via Codepush or something similar)

In big companies app releases are a huge problem when 100+ committers and tens of features are released to the same app sometimes within the same app update. React Native has the potential to enable feature teams independently update the app.

gorkemyurt··on Sorry, Chicago but Peter Thiel Is Mostly Right
"Yes, ambitious people go to these tech "Meccas" but I don't think it really increases any one individual person's chance of making it big."

How can this be true if you admit a large number of startups come out SF or NYC?

gorkemyurt··on Sorry, Chicago but Peter Thiel Is Mostly Right
But Thiel doesn't really target tech workers, he makes a more general observation, and its also valid for Toronto. If are smart and ambitious enough you shouldn't stay in Toronto.
gorkemyurt··on Uber starts self-driving car pickups in Pittsburgh
Drivers don't care! No one thinks they are going to be an Uber driver forever most think its a temporary thing.

I am pretty confident self driving cars are going to create more jobs than they destroy. Whole new businesses will be economically viable once the transportation costs are super low, traffic is less of a problem and when you don't need parking. On demand economy 2.0.

gorkemyurt··on Fewer foreign entrepreneurs say they need the U.S.
Yea America needs a different visa that allows people in without a lottery.
gorkemyurt··on USCIS Proposes Rule to Welcome International Entrepreneurs
http://thesfshipyard.com and http://www.hudsonyardsnewyork.com are both eb-5 eligible projects, I wouldn't call them bad areas..
