gopher2··on Amazon Echo Look
Things that I value when purchasing and choosing clothes:

* I want to avoid lots of decision-making and info gathering.

* I want it to be simple to buy.

* I want not super expensive, somewhat stylish, somewhat innocuous, occasionally things that I find unique and cool.

This seems like it would make all that easier. Probably will not get one because I don't care enough about the whole area, but I could see buying it if I wanted to improve my personal style for whatever reason or was more focused on being fashionable/stylish than I am at the moment.

Basically, Spotify Discovery Weekly for clothes. I doubt it will take off as fast as the Echo and it has more flop potential, because "Semi-weird Camera in your Closet" isn't as established a product category as "Radio in your Kitchen" but I think it could take off and also not be some horrible distopian thing.

An algorithm recommends easy-to-buy clothing for you based on a picture and your personal taste... Okay cool!

gopher2··on Regaining control of your attention
That's quite interesting how you think about tasks you want to do with "sources of friction" that way. How did you go about studying/identifying the less obvious sources?
gopher2··on Imzy wants to be a kinder, gentler version of Reddit
Right, exactly. If you own a bar and some person is picking fights all the time or generally acting like an asshole in your bar.. Then you tell them to change their behavior or throw them out of the bar. Or allow it and become "that kind of bar" over time.

Press coverage of Imzy has been rather clickbait-y. It's a good angle to get attention I guess. How the actual site and community will feel and plays out in practice will actually feel rather normal. Its not super revolutionary.. Internet forum moderates discussion and participation for better resulting community.

gopher2··on Tell HN: Political Detox Week – No politics on HN for one week
What exactly defines a story as political?

Some recent topics I can think of... Facebook + fake news is about technology and user behavior, and also very political. Government use of surveillance technology is both technological and political in nature. Role of social media in elections has technological, sociological, politic aspects to it that can be discussed.

To me, being "political" is both what you're talking about, and how you're talking about it.

I enjoy reading what the HN audience has to say about the above examples. I'd be disappointed if they're considered too political and off limits going forward.

Interested to see how this experiment goes.

gopher2··on The 14 Characteristics of Fascism (2003)
Are you saying that makes it okay, or that you are not surprised, or ... I guess, what is the point of saying that Trump is a continuation of existing trends? Is there anything that we could do differently because of that to not move towards fascism?
gopher2··on President Obama Should Shut Down the NSA’s Mass Spying Before It’s Too Late
Huh. Can you elaborate or point to something that talks about this culture shift away from "civilizational ethos" in detail? Obviously I'm familiar with what identity politics and neo conservatism are, but I'd like to read more about the point you're making.
gopher2··on We have an epidemic of deeply flawed meta-analyses, says John Ioannidis
Soooo a meta-analysis of meta-analyses?
gopher2··on In the Beginning Was the Command Line (1999)
Dang. What great writing! Descriptive, interesting, inspiring. It just makes me smile and I'm glad this was shared. It seems like a classic that lots of people are familiar with, but I've never read it before.
gopher2··on New Cities
Public transit infrastructure and especially rail/subway seems like a huge common denominator for 21st century cities that people are really attracted to living in: See the Bay Area, Boston, NYC, DC

So I think, "how do you build legitimate rail transit into an existing city without it currently" is an interesting question for people researching and thinking about this topic.

Good luck!

gopher2··on Test your “free will” at the Aaronson Oracle
Pressing in between the keys so I randomly hit both of them was the only way I could be unpredictable. That got a 4.9. Pressing back and forth trying to act as "random" as I could I stayed around a 7.8. Cool experiment
gopher2··on Skin in the Game – chapter drafts by Nassim Taleb
I agree with this and loved Fooled By Randomness. Taleb clearly thinks a lot about these types of things and usually has very interesting ideas. He also has fun analogies and presents things in a way that makes you think differently (partly because he doesn't state things with a lot of nuance).

However, he also comes off as quite arrogant to me with criticism of just about all others in society except for himself for one reason or another. Criticism of 'pseudo' intellectuals is especially ironic -- as at this point in his career he is probably best described as a pseudo-intellectual book author.

gopher2··on Google Home
Yeah, I'm sticking with Echo because business model.
gopher2··on Intelligence Committee Leaders Release Discussion Draft of Encryption Bill
> These laws are not for "terrorists". They're for us.

Yes. This is a great way of saying this.

gopher2··on Google Saves
I tried typing "what is this" in the search box. Maybe someone will get my message and reply back, for the next time I visit the page.
gopher2··on Follow the money: Apple vs. the FBI
Not just Apple Pay or being a bank, also about health data and about being trusted in other markets than United States. Good article, though.
gopher2··on Paul Krugman Reviews ‘The Rise and Fall of American Growth’ by Robert J. Gordon
You say you've thought this for years. What would have to happen to change your mind? The world seems pretty innovative.
gopher2··on You Don’t Need More Free Time
If this writer doesn't want their free time, can I have it?

Yes I know... probably not the point of the article, but I couldn't get past the clicky-baity headline.

gopher2··on I'm done with iCloud Photo Library
Where do you store your library?
gopher2··on How Did Michelin Become the World’s Authority on Restaurants?
Anyone can write a review on yelp.
gopher2··on What’s Really Killing Digital Health Startups
Random thoughts from working at a marketing/software company that people occasionally build Zapier integrations for.

Instead of their being one point of failure Company X <--> Company Y integration, there are now two points of failure Company X <--> Zapier <--> Company Y.

So, things may break. And if they do there are more points of failure in figuring out why.

If we really want a working integration with some other software, we build it directly and support it directly.

gopher2··on Amazon Will Ban Sale of Apple, Google Video-Streaming Devices
I don't get it.
gopher2··on Learn Enough Command Line to Be Dangerous (Draft)
This is great! I work on a team of "intended audience members" for this and have already shared it with some people. Is this the first of the 3 tutorials or do Git/Editors ones exist as well? (I know there are plenty of other git resources out there) Cheers!
gopher2··on If Materialism Is True, the United States Is Probably Conscious (2014)
I was thinking about something similar to this idea recently, but replace "United States" with a large corporation.

In a sense the United States is conscious, but the "experience" of being the United States, or Exxon mobile, or Google, is so far removed from the experience of being a person or even a rabbit that it doesn't matter. i.e. It's a metaphor more than anything else.

We take in information through eyes, ears, etc made up of cells. We think in a brain, experience emotions, inhabit a body.

The United States takes in information through organizations, people, computers, etc. It thinks and makes decisions via all sorts of different systems and processes. It doesn't have a physical body, it has different parts and material all over the place made of many different elements.

Perhaps it's true we only value forms of consciousness similar to our own.

I don't know, I don't philosophy well. This paper was thought provoking.

gopher2··on When small meets large, small almost always wins
This just seems like selection bias or some similar fallacy I'm forgetting the name of. There are plenty of small companies that go up against large companies and lose. You just don't hear about them very much.
gopher2··on "Freelance" Spies In NYC Are Publishing Private Conversations
Haven't read the article yet but not at all surprised by the concept. This seems like it was just a matter of time.
gopher2··on The Mind of Marc Andreessen
Very little substance? I dunno... what would you have liked to learn? What questions are left unanswered? Maybe I just don't know all that much about Marc Anderson but I thought it was interesting insight into the person.
gopher2··on Some Practical Thoughts on Suicide
Seconded. I'm very grateful for this book.
gopher2··on Some Practical Thoughts on Suicide
I have found basic cognitive behavioral therapy techniques like the "three column method" to be immensely helpful in dealing with negative thoughts/moods. Especially in combo with meditation. Copy of the book 'Feeling Good' is about 10$ and will teach you how to do it and give lots of good examples in different practical contexts, or just google 'triple column method cognitive therapy'.

Steps are generally: write down your automatic thoughts when you are feeling bad, identify how they are irrational or distorted, write down more accurate, balanced, realistic ones -> feeling better.

gopher2··on Crystal promises to help you understand how best to talk to any person
I just signed up and it has the option to suck in your gmail/outlook and provide you a "communication style" profile that's 1) definitely accurate at least for me 2) kind of cool to see a la personality style quiz.

So if you email me or anyone else who has done that it will I assume incorporate that.

gopher2··on Crystal promises to help you understand how best to talk to any person
This is neat. Reminds me of http://www.hemingwayapp.com

Anyone aware of other stuff like this or want to shamelessly promote something? I'm interested.
