googlryas··on MacWhisper: Transcribe audio files on your Mac
Out of curiosity, does anyone know what the state of the art for transcription is? Is there a possibility it will soon be "better than a person carefully listening and manually transcribing"?

I ask because I asked a friend to record a (for fun) lecture I couldn't attend, and unfortunately the speech audio levels are quite low, and I'm trying to figure out how to extract as much info as possible so I can hear it. If I could add context to the transcriber like "This is about the Bronze Age collapse and uses terminology commonly used in discussions on that topic", it might be even more useful.

$100 sounds much worse than phrasing it as 27 cents a day.

googlryas··on Have You Ever Heard of the Fernet Encryption Algorithm?

It's just a simple format specification using standard crypto primitives.

> HMAC using SHA256 for authentication.

googlryas··on I walked across Luxembourg
I was really hoping that Charles would just be king for a day and give it to William thereafter. Get some fresh blood in there, as well as a figure that didn't have 50 years of somewhat controversial behavior lined up behind them.
googlryas··on Suppose I wanted to kill a lot of pilots (2020)
Or, maybe, Munger figured out that what was viewed as obviously correct wasn't actually correct, and created a unique design to explore the possibilities when the obviously correct thing was removed.

The rebuttals to his design are basically just "every room needs a window", without any real justification. Do you think he didn't think of that? That he just forgot to put windows in?

My dorm at college had windows, and they were entirely worthless. There were 2 windows, 2'x6', frosted glass, and they could open about 3". I don't think they added much to the room

googlryas··on What saved the ‘miracle house’ in Lahaina?
Houses are made in factories in America, and they are generally regarded as a supremely inferior product, at the very least because of width constraints for shipping them via trucks on highways.

In what countries can you get high quality factory-built housing?

googlryas··on What saved the ‘miracle house’ in Lahaina?
Anyone can build houses out of more expensive materials, if they're ready to pay for it. America has an abundance of wood so wood framing houses seems sensible.

This is simply not true. They have duties to the shareholders and the best interests of the company, which is not the same thing as maximizing the share price.

googlryas··on What could Universal Early Childcare look like?
Might be true, but it is also an easy thing to say when it is still new
googlryas··on What could Universal Early Childcare look like?
Except, you aren't necessarily choosing that if you have adequate, dependable childcare arrangements, like a universal early childcare .

It's only, essentially, poor people who have to give up on their pursuits if they also want to raise a kid.

googlryas··on What could Universal Early Childcare look like?
Well, most people do not consider "mountain biking" to be anything done on a mountain bike. If I sit on a trainer in my living room on my mountain bike, I am not mountain biking.

Mountain biking was an example of a hobby that is very difficult to pursue unless you have child care arrangements, whether it is day care, a baby sitter, or only while a partner has free time on a weekend.

I don't even mountain bike. I'm very confused how you're reading so much into the example, and simultaneously not by saying riding your bike in the city is what I was getting at.

googlryas··on What could Universal Early Childcare look like?
Well, that seems extremely reckless, but good job on not crashing and severely injuring your children I guess. Maybe we're thinking of different types of mountain biking.

And this is also a reason why listing specifics is a fools errand(which makes me a fool), because in the multitude there will always be someone who said "actually I did that and everything turned out fine".

I smoked crack while pregnant, and my kid went to Harvard. See, no issues there.

googlryas··on What could Universal Early Childcare look like?
Well, I've done both, and I've found parenting harder. I guess that's just my take.

Were you raising children or just "homemaking", which doesn't necessarily imply childcare?

You really can't think of any activities/interest people pursue that you can't do while toting a 2 year old with you? That's something I didn't think would require enumerating.

googlryas··on What could Universal Early Childcare look like?
No, it's just that child care doesn't turn off at a set time like most jobs do. Your schedule might be 6am-8pm, with multiple periods in the early morning while you're up.

I say this as a person who has been both a full time programmer and a full time care giver. Being the care giver was far more frazzling and non stop compared to my job. I found it far easier to pursue personal interests when I was working full-time compared to parenting full-time. Pretty much my only time without a kid in my life would be late at night, and even then you need to stay in the house to watch them, and you may be too tired and sleep deprived to actually be able to pursue an interest if it is pursuable in your own home.

googlryas··on Carmakers don’t need ‘EV divisions,’ the whole company should go electric now
No, not sacrifice. Even if all ICE car production ended tomorrow, there are 100M cars in the US.

And my point wasn't that apartment dwellers won't get to have cars any more, just that they would rely on destination charging, or hopping over to a supercharger-esque place for 15 minutes/week. I wouldn't want to use public chargers only with my EV, but that is because I live in a rural area and therefore need to drive a lot. If all of my trips were 1/3rd the distance I don't think I would mind using a public charger to stay charged.

googlryas··on Carmakers don’t need ‘EV divisions,’ the whole company should go electric now
70% of Americans live in single family homes:

https://www.builderonline.com/money/economics/80-percent-of-...

And, many apartment dwellers either have easier access to public transit and walkable tasks, and so make fewer car trips than single family home folk, and they make shorter car trips since they live in a denser environments where everything is closer.

So, I think this issue may be overblown.

googlryas··on Carmakers don’t need ‘EV divisions,’ the whole company should go electric now
Sure, and there are about 100,000,000 gas powered cars in the US. Even if every company stopped producing gas cars immediately, there still would be no shortage of gas cars for decades.

googlryas··on In praise of blowing up your life
It's not just about income, but also your assets. From your description, I don't think it is wrong to call you rich, or at least above average net worth and income. Also, you making $135k solo is a much better situation than you+partner making $135k combined as might happen with the median college couple. You doing it solo means your partner can put all their time into...well..whatever they want.

I don't really see anything wrong with your reply, I was mostly replying to the person who was whining that you have to be rich to do it. But I do think, if you had less income and fewer assets you would need to go about doing what you did in a different way.

googlryas··on In praise of blowing up your life
It's not like OP said "Anyone can do it just like this!". It's just what they did. Is it really so shocking to you that richer people have more opportunities in their lives than poorer people?

Why does there need to be a paid API, when reddit provides all of the content over a free HTTP API to user agents already? Are these apps more than just a custom user agent?
googlryas··on 21st-century editors should keep their hands off of 20th-century books
I understand what you're saying, but that simply will not happen with something as widespread as Roald Dahl. Newspapers have always been ephemeral - books have not been. What would happen in Dahl's case is the price on the used book market would start trending upwards for the 20th century version, and at some point someone would decide to do another version to cash in and satisfy the demand.
googlryas··on 21st-century editors should keep their hands off of 20th-century books
Boy, speak about projection. Believe it or not, but there was a time when you didn't know everything about the world, and even simple concepts needed to be explicitly taught to you.
googlryas··on 21st-century editors should keep their hands off of 20th-century books
Roald Dahl books have sold over 300 million copies worldwide. The stories have been digitized, archived, transcribed, and photocopied an uncountable number of times.

I think we will have no problem finding the 20th century versions.
