goodbyesf··on “Is Fish Meat?” One Justice’s Answer Shows Why the Supreme Court Is So Broken
> This article is part of a flood of anti-supreme-court rhetoric that has started in the last couple of years

Last few years? Can you point to a specific time when there wasn't anti-supreme court rhetoric?

> But sowing distrust in our democratic institutions — be it our election systems, our law enforcement agencies, or the supreme court, is not healthy for democracy.

Ironically, you are just parroting nonsense you heard on the news - 'This is extremely dangerous to our democracy'. Distrust of democratic institutions is foundational to america. The founders distrusted democracy. It's why we have checks and balances. You are supposed to distrust democracy because by nature, it's tyranny of the mob highly susceptible to demogoguery.

> Even though these institutions are indeed flawed.

Then we should distrust them.

Also, the supreme court, like the navy, fbi, cia, etc, isn't technically a democratic institution as we ( the people ) don't directlly vote for supreme court justices.

goodbyesf··on If you travel to China, be aware of an exit ban
Spies or people tied to spies. When canada arrested or kidnapped the chinese huawei executive a few years ago on US orders, the chinese government held canadian spies in return. Tit for tat. Of course we whine about it endlessly and push propagnada to make the chinese look like the bad guys.
goodbyesf··on Remains found in China may belong to third human lineage
From your wiki: "In its revised form, it is similar to the Assimilation Model, which holds that modern humans originated in Africa and today share a predominant recent African origin, but have also absorbed small, geographically variable, degrees of admixture from other regional (archaic) hominin species"

> Most people consider the multiregional origin theory highly motivated reasoning

As if the Out of Africa theory isn't highly motivated?

> and also completely garbage science.

But genetic evidence has proven that we all have different hominin dna. Science backs the revised multiregional model.

This reminds me of the clovis theory. The agenda driven people always front run any criticism of the clovis theory because they were on the wrong side of history and science.

As opposed to the us or europe or canada or anywhere else? Also, don't you mean 'the ccp'?
goodbyesf··on CNET is deleting old articles to try to improve its Google Search ranking
> Bad. Antithetical to both Google's original ideals and the early 'netzien goals.

At this point, we should all realize that every ideal and slogan spouted by tech companies is just marketing. We were just too young and naive to know any better. 'Don't be evil'. In hindsight, that should have set off alarm bells.

> POV: Republicans are now afraid of [checks notes] Canadian 'foreign meddling'.

This is the first time I've ever been mistaken for being a republican. Not surprised my comment went right over your head. Your brain is so fried with politics that you can't understand that I'm trying to help you. Nothing you say or do will affect politics. You might as well go scream at a mountain for being in the way. I used to think highly of canadians. But the more canadians I run into, the more pathetic they come across. Maybe it's because the good canadians live their lives while the bad waste their time screaming about other countries' politics. Or maybe familiarity breeds contempt.

Go get a life instead of worrying about foreign politics. And let me clue you in on a little secret, both the republican and the democratic party are shit and they both work for the same master. If there is anything more pathetic than a trumptard, it's a canadian obsessed with republicans or democrats.

> We are saturated in your news, your media, and your politics.

That's my point. Why not saturate yourselves with your own news, your own media, your own politics. Canada surely must have something going for it?

> You honestly think that people living half an hour from the border don't get an opinion?

I'm not far from the canadian border and I don't a shit about canadian politics. You don't have to obsess over foreign politics. You'll live longer.

> When did americans get in the business of licensing who could have opinions, anyway?

Since 1776?

> So much for the land of free speech. RIP

Chalk it up to foreign meddling.

goodbyesf··on 50M tons of water vapor from Tonga's eruption could warm Earth for years
I doubt it. The alarmists have never been right about global warming. Even back when it was called global cooling. Nor about peak oil. Nor about the ozone. Nor about HIV. Nor about covid. I really can't remember anything the alarmists have been right about. Has drought wiped out california yet? I remember the alarmists were really worried about california a few years ago. Is new orleans underwater yet? I remember how concerned the alarmists were about new orleans. The levee is holding?

Also, the article is from 2022. The eruption occurred in jan 2022. And they only expected it to affect the climate for 'the months to come'. So, no reason to be alarmed now more than 1.5 years after the eruption.

> A GOP downvote pile-on is now pretty good evidence of having said something truthful, especially when it's accompanied by an equally strong (or stronger) updraft of upvotes from other tendencies.

You aren't american. Why do you even care? So many foreigners like you have an unhealthy obsession with american politics, culture, etc. Honestly, don't you have anything going on in your own country to occupy your time? It never occurs to me to waste my time discussing other countries' politics in other countries' forum. The propagandists say that it's the russians or the chinese that are meddling in american politics, but that hasn't been my experience online. It's foreigners like you. I just don't get it.

goodbyesf··on Do you avoid the news? You’re in growing company
> Definitely a demand issue.

This is simply not true. There is no demand. That's why the news industry forced google, youtube, facebook, etc to push their product all over their platforms. The news industry literally got government to force tech companies to peddle their noxious product.

> To me, the only plausible shift to more fact-based and balanced coverage happens via subsidies -- the government has to insert itself into the market and put its thumb on the scale.

This has got to be the dumbest or the most naive thing I've read in a while. If you get government involved, then you'd get garbage statist propaganda. Also it would really put a dent on the false myth about journalists 'holding power to account' when they are paid by the government.

> The media did a yeoman-like job of fact-checking Trump every day

The media that created the Trump brand, the media that gave him 24/7 free publicity, the media that got him elected, etc? That's the media you are praising?

> do something that would have this kind of positive societal leverage

The problem in society is news. More news or more government funded news is not the answer.

goodbyesf··on Mexico seeks to solidify rank as top U.S. trade partner, push further past China
> The first thing to understand about trade is that it is always beneficial for both parties.

Not true. There can be winners and losers in 'trading' and usually there are. For example, the native americans and europeans being a prime example.

> Because each side can simply decline a transaction that doesn't help them.

Not if one side is much stronger and liable to invade or punish you. The past 500 years is essentially a story of europeans invading/'exploring' to get better 'trade terms' from natives, africans, indians, chinese, ottomans, japanese, etc.

The biggest winners of trade in the last 500 years were europeans and the biggest losers are everyone else.

goodbyesf··on North American English Dialects
> Is the etymology really needed in this case to know how to pronounce "c"?

No. You learn it through osmosis by being immersed in the culture. We all learn to pronounce face, celery, coupe, etc from our parents, school, media, etc. Etymology only comes into play if you want to know why we pronounce it that way.

> I believe in -ce- -ci- -cy- the c is an s, while in -ca- -co- -cu- the c is a k.

That probably works most of the time since I believe that's the rule the french use and so much of our vocabulary came from the french. But there are exceptions as others have noted. 'Boston Celtics' is pronounced with a soft c, while the 'celtic people', is pronounced with a hard c. As far as I know it's cultural. There isn't a rule which will help you out here other than you simply have to know it.

goodbyesf··on Mexico seeks to solidify rank as top U.S. trade partner, push further past China
> Why do HN commentators assume Mexico is a 3rd world shithole?

Because the economic disparity between the US and Mexico is so vast that in comparison, it is a 3rd world country. Also, the millions of mexicans immigrating to the US, the neverending news about cartels, etc adds to the perception.

Also, most HN commentators are americans, not chinese. Not sure why you are comparing mexico to china.

> Mexico has it's problems, but most of that stems from the Peso Crisis in the 1990s

No it doesn't. The negative perception of mexico goes back to the first half of the 1800s when we conquered 51% of mexico and turned it into texas, california, etc. Remember the alamo, mass deportation of mexicans and so forth and that negativity has existed ever since. Also, the peso crisis affected mexico only, while the pandemic affected everybody, not just china. The world endured the recession while only mexico suffered immensely during the peso crisis.

goodbyesf··on North American English Dialects
> Don't expect it to make sense.

It only makes sense if you know how the word entered the english language. Face and celery comes from french which pronounces these words with a soft c. So we pronounce it with a soft c. Coupe comes from french which pronounces it with a hard c. Hence why we pronounce coupe with a hard c. The 'strange' spelling and pronunciation of words with c is a result of loan words from many languages ( french, latin, german, spanish, etc ).

goodbyesf··on Scientists of Chinese descent leaving the US at an accelerating pace
> and the US is happy to take that money

US is or our colleges are?

> Maybe China is playing it dirty and forces these scientists to come back.

Or maybe 'China provides many opportunities for its citizens to study abroad and expand their horizons' and their citizens want to help their own country in turn?

> Sure, "freedom" and "human rights" are something but frankly

Nobody immigrates for 'freedom' and 'human rights'? Everyone immigrates for 'better life' - money. And what freedom and human rights do the chinese lack?

> You get treated like second class human beings and are forced to fight and prove you deserve something others were simply born with.

Good. Why should non-citizens be treated the same as citizens? Every country should treat their citizens better than non-citizens.

> There must be an incentive for these people to endure that kind of process.

'Freedom' and 'human rights'. Funny isn't it? It's sounds so stupid when you say it out loud and yet the dumb masses believe it.

> And for many Chinese whose homeland in every way a direct competitor to the US, there aren't enough reasons.

Good. It means china is advancing and providing opportunities for their own people. These chinese scientists should go home and help create china's harvard, mit, etc. And hopefully india, south america, africa and rest of the world follows china's example. The blueprint is there and if china is able to develop then so can the rest of the world.

goodbyesf··on Can focusing on class instead of race solve our country’s equity issues?
No. We are fundamentally a racist society, not a classist society. It was all blacks who were deemd 3/5th of a person. Not poor blacks. It was all native americans who were exterminated, not the poor natives. Our immigration bans throughout history have been along racial lines - Chinese Exlusion Act, Asian Exclusion Act, etc. Not poor chinese or asian exclusion act. Wealthy and poor jews were discriminated against by colleges around the country. So on and so forth.

When's the last time you asked yourself 'What class person X belongs to.'? We think in terms of race and to a lesser extent religion.

Besides, it's not an either-or situation. Why can't we address both racial and class issues?

goodbyesf··on Disney discontinues DVD and Bluray production in Australia

> Unalienable IDs seem to me to be the "default" of human societies. Before technology, everyone had "unalienable IDs" -- if you saw Bob, it was Bob.

Interesting. That makes me wonder if cultures around the world feared twins precisely due to the fact that ''unalienable ids' were the default of human societies'. In 'Things Fall Apart', identical twins are automatically 'dispatched' in the evil forest as soon as they are born because they are deemed 'evil'. I never understood why. But since identical twins break the natural default id system of human societies, maybe some societies felt it better to sacrifice the few to preserve the system.

goodbyesf··on Watch TV from the 90s and earlier
> There is something extremely addictive about flipping channels on TV.

The worst is when the remote dies on you because somebody keeps forgetting to replace the batteries. So you have to sit a foot from the tv screen to manually flip the channels. Then you get yelled at by your parents because it's bad for your eyes. And now everybody, including your parents, is frying their eyes looking at a monitor or smartphone screen up close.

> The spirit of the company aligns with most people's basic ethics and morality.

Even if it did, the guidelines are still company guidelines not community guidelines. That was my point. Calling it community guidelines is a form of social engineering to appeal to many people's natural desire to conform.

> The difference with a cult is apparent looking at the definition. Google gives me this:

I didn't say hn is a cult. I was just pointing out the common tools of manipulation used by both cults and social media sites like twitter, like reddit, like hn.

> You could argue there's a weird veneration of dang, which I do find kind of odd, but most people wouldn't consider "treat others with respect" as strange or sinister.

You are building a straw man. Where did I ever even mention anything about 'treat other's with respect'. You are attributing to me an argument I didn't make. And are hammering at it. I made no assertion about any specific guideline. I didn't say whether they were good or bad. I even went out of my way to say the company has a right to set whatever guideline they want. I was just pointing out the social engineering aspect to it. Whether the guidelines says be 'mean to others' or 'be kind to others' is meaningless to my argument as it is about social engineering. Hope that cleared up the confusion.

goodbyesf··on The Lonely Work of Moderating Hacker News (2019)
> HN is one of the few communities where I've had scenarios where I've gotten into a spirited discussion, been gently told to cool off (or gotten a temporary rate limit), taken a step back and realized, you know what? I was not interacting in the spirit of the community.

Not the spirit of the 'community', the spirit of the company. The community didn't set the guidelines. The company did. It's a private company so it's their right. Also, what you experienced is a form of social/behaviorial engineering. It's what happens in cults, when the leader admonishes a follower for hurting the group, collective or community by breaking the group's rules. Of course the group doesn't make any rules, the leader does. The stubborn or independent minded tend to fight against leader and get banned. But most people are docile, blame themselves and rejoin the cult becoming even more fanatic than the leader.

> Thanks dang!

They even come to love the dear leader.

> something I immediately miss when I step into other less curated forums such as Reddit and Twitter

It isn't less curated. It's even more curated using the same dark arts and patterns of social engineering. It's just that reddit and twitter have many more users. If this 'community' grew to the size of reddit and twitter, it would be a much different place.

Edit: If you ever wonder if social engineering works, read the comments in this post. Nothing 'hacker' about it.

I must have misread it. I could have sworn that you wrote you experienced white flight due to your chinese heritage.
goodbyesf··on Sinead O’Connor has died
> No, it's not.

Yes it is. It's a modern invention created for political reasons.

> It's meant to describe three major modern religions with common roots in the ancient near east.

Then why not call it Adamic religions. All three religions begin with adam. That's a better description than abrahamic as abrahamic religion only describes judaism. As I clearly explained. Judaism fundamentally starts with abraham because god formed the first convenant with abraham establishing a jewish people. Abraham doesn't matter at all to christianity as christ negates the covenant between god and abraham.

> These religions have much in common both historically and theologically.

Are you kidding me? Christians and Jews have been attacking each other for thousands of years. Not only are they not common historically and theologically, they directly contradict each other. Judaism believes that jesus is a false prophet rotting in 'hell'. Christianity believes Jesus is God. Judaism believes worshipping christ is a form of idolatry ( one of the worst crimes ). Christians believes in the deification of christ. Judaism allows for usury to gentiles. Christianity is against all usury. Judaism believes in 'an eye for an eye'. Christianity believes in 'turn the other cheek'. Judaism believes god ordains their king ( no separation of church and state ). Christianity believes in 'render unto caesar what is caesar's and render onto god what is god's'.

'Historically, some Jewish writers and scholars have considered Jesus as the most damaging "false prophet"'

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judaism%27s_view_of_Jesus

Judaism has historically believed Jesus as the worst thing to have ever happened in history. Christianity believes Jesus to be the best thing to have ever happened. What commonality? Just because christian bibles include the old testament with the new testament? Many christian bibles only contain the new testament.

If these religions had anything fundamentally in common, we'd only have one religion. Judaism and christianity theologically contradict each other.

While I provide detailed answers describing biblical and historical facts, all my detractors do is reply with petty nonsense like 'theologicians disagree'. Who cares?

> The relationship is similar to that of Hinduism, Jainism and Buddhism.

No it is not. Those religions are actually related to each other but nobody calls them 'buddhaic religions' as it would not be an apt description of those three religions. As I said, there is only one abrahamic religion - judaism.

goodbyesf··on White Flight from Asian Immigration: Evidence from California Public Schools
> Since Asians on average are both wealthier and earn more than average Caucasian families

That's superficially true because most asians are concentrated in high cost of living areas and major cities while the white population is distributed all over the country ( both high cost and low cost areas ). If you take an asian nurse in LA ( 100K) and compare her salaray against the average of a white nurse in LA (100K) and a white nurse in rural missouri (50K), of course the 100K asian > 75K white average. But that's a bit misleading because the white nurse in LA earns as much as the asian nurse in LA. Granted asians are concentrated in these areas due to the long history of racism against asians in america, but stats are stats.

> isn’t using the term “White flight” a bit incorrect due to its connotations?

Only if you believe white flight is income based rather than race based. Pretty sure it is race based. I don't think people were vetting their minority neighbors' income and work history before deciding to flee for whiter pastures.

> I’m the product of white and Chinese heritage and this feels true to me.

My condolences.

> Do unforgettable work. This is not hyperbole.

It was hyperbole from the first sentence on. I feel lied to.

No. It's not. Business is more about relationships than 'unforgettable work'. Most clients would prefer to work with people they like who are competent than someone they don't like who does unforgettable work.

goodbyesf··on Singapore to execute woman on drugs charge for the first time in 20 years
It's not ruthless, it's humane. Singapore is a tiny resourceless nation. They cannot afford a societal breakdown due to drugs like 'the west'. Maybe if singaporeans invade the americas, stole all the land and resources, they can afford a societal breakdown or two due to endless amount of resources. Til then, maybe singapore knows more about how to form their own society and doesn't need our borg-like imperialist western 'values'. Hopefully more and more nations around the world will stick to their values and stop being intimidated by the west. We love diversity except where it matters.
