goodJobWalrus··on How to get kids to pay attention
I am so grateful my parents didn't need to "create space in my schedule" for anything. I created my own schedule (outside of school). That is autonomy, not your parents creating spaces in your schedule.
goodJobWalrus··on A newly discovered film shows Franklin D. Roosevelt, who had polio, walking
Ok, I have to ask, what kind of camera was that? Did we really have film cameras small enough that could be casually carried by tourists in 1935?
goodJobWalrus··on Diamonds Suck (2006)
No really, if a lot of them (gift givers) are older family members (already married). In that case, you will pay back much later when you are that older family, so, at best, it's like a long-term loan when you needed most.
goodJobWalrus··on “Lifefaker.com makes faking perfection easy”
Getting that domain probably wasn't dirt cheap either. Kudos for the commitment.

I mean, you have no reason to suspect he was ever violent. On the other hand, if he flashes women at the office, they'll sue the company. If the company is well known, the press is going to get to that. Anyway, you have shit on your hands. If you are not the owner, just an employee in charge of recruiting, you may even lose your job. It is a bit risky.

But I don't see a problem with hiring the guy to work from home as a contractor.

goodJobWalrus··on Ask HN: What are your daily (or weekly) routines?
Yes, like that. However, in the last couple of months, I managed to move my kid's schedule from waking up at 4:30 AM, to more humane 6-7. I am very proud of this achievement.
goodJobWalrus··on Ask HN: Successful one-person online businesses?
Which means it only makes sense being profiled if the readers of those sites are your potential customers.
goodJobWalrus··on WrkRiot CEO Pleads Guilty to Defrauding Employees
Eh, I guess. Seems quite common even among high profile people though. I also remember a dean from the MIT being caught for the same thing, after something like 20 years. She too just resigned, and that was that.
goodJobWalrus··on WrkRiot CEO Pleads Guilty to Defrauding Employees
Probably not. If it was, for example, that Yahoo CEO, pre-Mayer, who also faked his credentials would have been arrested.

Any lawyers here? How much can he get for this?
goodJobWalrus··on Grit is a muscle, train it
There is a guy from Stanford, BJ Fogg is the name IIRC, who does a course "Simple Habits". It's like, commit to doing 1 pushup for 5 days first thing in the morning. It is supposed to lead to forming long-term bigger habits, but I'm personally not convinced. Anyways, check him out.

It delivers in Canada. Both small items by post, and large items (furniture) for $100 flat.
goodJobWalrus··on An Accidental Marketing Tactic That Many Companies Can Learn From
Are those services free in the US? In Canada forwarding costs quite a bit.
goodJobWalrus··on The power of a 'not-to-do' list
where is this quote from? I want to learn more about Charlies thoughts. What should I read?
goodJobWalrus··on New t-shirt sewing robot can make as many shirts per hour as 17 factory workers
In this context, I think he really talks about taxing capital (or capital investments that displace workers).

goodJobWalrus··on A Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Hardbound Update
yes, it's I believe $5/month to unlock all of the stories, otherwise you get just the newest one.
goodJobWalrus··on A Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Hardbound Update
No, because people who give the money to the investor (limited partners) can optimize their own portfolios. It is not the VC's mandate to do that. From the LP's point of view, investment in the VC fund is the risky component of their portfolio.
goodJobWalrus··on A tale of two Canadas: Where you grew up affects your income in adulthood
At first, I was surprised about southern BC, but then it could be that it's so awesome there that people don't want to move.
goodJobWalrus··on Uber driver arrested, my 76yo dad left on the street at 1am
You really don't think that Uber should do any background check, such as whether their drivers have suspended license?
goodJobWalrus··on Jacque Fresco has died
Anthropologists seem to agree* that hunter-gatherers (our ancestors, but also ones living in modern times) worked a little less than 8 hours a day.

* For source, I've seen Yuval Noah Harari and Peter Gray writing about it.
