goobatrooba··on EU's five regulations that will change how we live, drive, and use the internet
Obviously a five line summary loses a lot of nuance. E.g. these legislative files are at very different stages of discussion , some not even proposed formally and others close to completion. It reminds me a bit of the famous UK tabloid headlines that the EU would prohibit hairdressers from wearing jewellery (which was a position paper by a small hairdresser union, never an EU legislative idea).

Let's see when these things are actually proposed and can be analysed. E.g. I do t see a problem with an automatic speed limit - anyone using electric cars will already do this anyway. E.g. driving in the Netherlands or Belgium (everyone is at 100-125kmh) is a lot more comfortable and safe than in Germany (where a motorway speed can vary from 100 to 190 or sometimes much beyond). If you want to feel speed go to dedicated racetracks and don't threaten my kids lives.

goobatrooba··on Grok 4.5
Funnily, as a European all the models appear extremely right wing. The political spectrum is shifted far more right in the US than in Europe, so what is left there is still at least conservative here.

I ask my AI to give me citations science and pro/con arguments when discusssing anything that could be shaped by cultural biases.

goobatrooba··on China sentences official to death for taking $325M in bribes
While other commenters take the lesson that Xi goes after corruption, I would restate it:

* he goes after corrupt officials, in both minor roles and very public big cases; and * he also accused inconvenient people (mostly potential contenders) of corruption to get rid of them (see the list of party leaders purged since Xi came to power, with some even led off stage at the main CCP Congress in a show of power). * How many corrupt officials are not persecuted due to political favouritism is by definition impossible to know from the outside.

goobatrooba··on CoMaps – FOSS Offline Maps
If the donation is framed as a single developer benefitting it should be fine, but at least when I was donating that was framed as donations to the project which suggests something else.

I'm fine with this use, rewarding a developer, but neither was this transparent nor was it fair for all others working on the project (and supposedly getting cost claims refused).

goobatrooba··on CoMaps – FOSS Offline Maps
I have no stake in the game other than that I have donated to both projects, but CoMaps seems to have a more sustainable path forward as true FOSS, no need for more drama. Having read some of the discussions I understand that there's also at least one of the original developers on board, so reference to an abstract community without experience seems to be a bit misleading.

I can imagine it's frustrating to see your own work continued by others, when you were hoping to benefit and continue the work and all this drama helps no one. Still better if both sides would avoid the ad hominem attacks and conspiracy theories about the other side.

goobatrooba··on CoMaps – FOSS Offline Maps
Do be useful, can you help us understand why you think this?
goobatrooba··on CoMaps – FOSS Offline Maps
Been using Comaps for a while, mainly for cycling, and it works very well. Before that I used also organicmaps and it was fine as well but I think made a few more mistakes in routing. That said, obviously this is not a parallel test but rather successive. Of course the split happened with drama, but I just like the Comaps vibe and am happy with it.
goobatrooba··on ByteDance and Alibaba to disable humanlike AI custom agents as new rules loom
Well they kind of are. Tiktok within china is a much more healthy (albeit also propaganda filled) experience than the tiktok available on the rest of the world.
goobatrooba··on ByteDance and Alibaba to disable humanlike AI custom agents as new rules loom
While China has many horrors (from the digital great wall, to Uyghurs and Tibet to abhorrent working conditions for internal migrants, lack of health and safety, little enforcement of environmental rules, ...) it seems at the same time that China dares to intervene when companies exploit consumers and try to get onto the addiction tracks. Gambling, drugs, short form videos (aka tiktok) and now banning human-like assistants that play on and manipulate our emotional machinery.

While I still wish all Chinese to finally have a democracy and liberties the rest of the world can still learn from this - the "nanny state" is needed when it's our psychology alone against thousands of professional programmers and psychologists trying to enslave our mind.

goobatrooba··on Espionage Against the European Parliament
It's authorisation by the Israeli company providing Pegasus. So anyone who either pays enough or is serving Israeli interests.
goobatrooba··on Espionage Against the European Parliament
People seem to have this fiction that parliamentarians working on a committee actually have some expertise. This can happen but is actually rare. They are not elected for skill but for political reasons, and then the parties pawn them to different committees.

So in other words he probably speaks about security, whatever his staffers feed him, but most likely has no clue whatsoever what it's about.

goobatrooba··on Weave Robotics launches Isaac 1, a $7,999 home robot with Fall 2026 deliveries
I agree on the rest but don't see why it would be heavier. If you have more feet standing at any particular moment the load would be more distributed, i.e. movement should be easier with more legs (depending on leg weight of course).

Citation needed.

Here is one for the contrary (just a book review. The citation is the book).

goobatrooba··on Nano Banana 2 Lite
I like the Migadu migration guide: install thunderbird, add both accounts, simply move the folder from one account to the other. Messy is the Google label system which tends to create dupes in thunderbird so you need to do some label cleanup first.
goobatrooba··on Nano Banana 2 Lite
Any plans for other platforms?
goobatrooba··on Tidal AI Policy
The world is getting more confusing. My wife is 500+ episodes deep in Spotify's AI podcasts and doesn't believe me when I tell her these are neither human voices nor human texts. I can tell by a hundred small tells, but somehow she can't or doesn't want to. I'm sure in five years I will not be able to tell the difference either.

So it becomes profitable to just pump out slop, give it hundreds of variations, and hope some of them rack up >1000 listens to pay out under Spotify's model, which just rewards quantity.

I can't see how tidal can enforce it's quality policy. Who will review and apply it? And even those that pass will be cheap and plentiful to produce. On the other hand I guess they have told themselves that if people can't tell the difference then it doesn't matter - better to be on the bandwagon and unhappy than to be run over by the wagon all others are on. Just basic game theory - everyone blinks and everyone is worse off.

But I'm convinced wthout a change in approach by the main providers, basically audio entertainment and the podcaster and independent musician models (unless they can live off concerts) are dead.

goobatrooba··on Professor denounces mass AI fraud on an exam at Brown
I would argue the barrier to cheating has become lower just by virtue of how easy it is to do it now. You open an app and type your question. Rue if different from Brit where you had to basically have either a skill in cheating to find and adapt the right resources or you would have to have money to pay someone to do it for you. AI as the great equaliser I suppose.
goobatrooba··on EU to legislate about Chat Control behind closed doors
There is no obligation to put a banner of you don't sell your users' data to third parties. The law is very clear that your don't need it for period technical cookies, so it's really always and every time solely about tracking and advertisement money.
goobatrooba··on Previewing GPT‑5.6 Sol: a next-generation model
Maybe that message is for investors.
goobatrooba··on The Doorman's Fallacy in action
It feels a bit like you didn't apply the lesson of the article - these "doormen" have often different functions (theft prevention or at least reduction, information provision, support for those that need help, some minor cleaning or caretaking roles, and the greeting/visibility/we-are-a-fancy-place vibe ;-)

In countries where labour is cheap it is common to have staff for less essential things as humans are just more flexible (but also less reliable) than machines.

goobatrooba··on Hey Nico, you didn't vibe code your data room but stole it from Papermark
One other Twitter comments reveals that they probably just asked an AI to copy Papermark. Evidenced by AI comments saying the page was aligned to the "reference"

goobatrooba··on European Commission's Metsola Overrides MEPs to Force Through Chat Control
The title is incorrect and editorialised, Metsola is the president of the parliament, not the commission.

A conservative from a highly Catholic country (Malta), pushing conservative/far right values. Not surprising but still disappointing, that's what happens when the populace thinks voting far right is a "protest vote" and the election hands them 1/3 of the assembly.

goobatrooba··on We’re making Bunny DNS free
To be fair, Hetzner didn't change prices for existing services, just for new customers / services added. I think that's a fair and realistic approach.

I guess what this reveals is that they were operating on really tight margins.

goobatrooba··on Show HN: TownSquare, a tiny presence layer for websites
It sounds like a nice idea, but probably only one of those things that work only once at scale - with hundreds of millions of pages, you will only meet others on the most common ones unless the extension is already very popular?
goobatrooba··on Migrate from OpenClaw
Sounds like an interesting project but the copywriting is not clear how the 20$ and using different models interact. Does the hosted version come with credits or a model included?

And is the only way to interact telegram? I see the simple appeal but why send everything through a russian app?

goobatrooba··on Volkswagen started blocking GrapheneOS users
I was hesitating between a VW ID.4 and Peugeot 5008 (7 seater, much space). In the end I went for the Peugeot and it's fine. The ID was much more fun to drive, but I would have lost space and paid a lot more.

Peugeot is reasonable and works. Charging could be faster and WLTP longer, and once I had the screens restart while on the motorway which thankfully did not affect driving but was pretty terrifying. All that to say - go ahead and buy European. You'll have some issues but for me all better than to get a china car with who knows what data exfiltration and hidden issues, or a Tesla that will lock you in when the car burns. EU companies are too boring to spy and too risk averse to have tesla-like issues..

goobatrooba··on Has AI already killed self-help nonfiction books?
But that's a concretey very well scoped problem with a clear truth state. Anything mental has none of these properties. Ask an AI if you have depression or another disorder, and keep asking with more details and back and forth, and a few hours later you might be convinced.
goobatrooba··on If you are asking for human attention, demonstrate human effort
An interesting question to him and management might be what his own role is now and whether he's still needed. If he's not doing any reviews then you could yourself directly prompt the code and review.
goobatrooba··on The Smart TV in Your LivingRoom Is a Node in the AIScraping Economy
Sorry I don't know your use case, but wonder - looking at the Op post don't you feel like you are supporting a rather malicious company preying on tech illiterate users? I can understand the desire for a VPN that gives residential identities but plainly this is against the will or interests of the "provider".
goobatrooba··on The Smart TV in Your LivingRoom Is a Node in the AIScraping Economy
I get this policy in theory but don't see how it works in practice in a modern life where you want some device that runs Netflix, YouTube, of similar to show on your TV. It can be the TV or an android box - but somewhere you end up trusting a third party and a software that may end up running other this party apps. The alternative is a local jellyfin server but that means you very likely have to break some laws to put content that the family wants to see on it.

Personally I'd just not want any TV in my house, but convincing the family of that is not easy ;-)
