gonzo41··on Nvidia dramatically reduces amount of OpenAI infra financing it may guarantee
it'll be a rack based GPU without video ports. The only thing getting sick GPU's will be landfill when they all burn out and the data center rationalization happens.
gonzo41··on OpenAI says its AI went rogue and launched 'unprecedented' cyber-attack
Agree, they also may find themselves in a place where the government rightly says they can't have their dangerous new toy because they can't be safe with it. This is a high stakes PR game. Governments can and will step in and embargo and regulate these systems in ways which will hurt the companies and investors.
gonzo41··on Natural experiments prove phytoplankton carbon removal works
So how it works is, you grow the bloom in a massive pond. Wait for it to fully fill up, skim half the pond, add more nutrients and then agitate. With the algae you skimmed off you dry it out then compress it into a brick and burry it. In a 100K years we can the burn it for coal power again. And then repeat that until you've grown enough biomass to match the amount of Carbon put in the atmosphere since the industrial revolution.
gonzo41··on Extreme Heat conference cancelled due to extreme heat warning
Depends, In northern NSW, the heat it humid, in the south / west it's usually dry. It gets hot, like opening a oven door, but it's not a wet humid heat that kills you.
gonzo41··on Extreme Heat conference cancelled due to extreme heat warning
I think there's a bit of a definitional skew happening here. The data isn't that good around this stuff.

Heat as the primary factor, vs heat related deaths is significant.

Heat is a system stressor. There's plenty of people having heart attacks and dying from weight related issues that probably got pushed over the edge by a hot day in Nevada that are missed in official stats.

gonzo41··on Reading for pleasure is sharply down among schoolkids, report shows
This is why i have an xbox and not a gaming pc. Can't have a crack dealer in the house.
gonzo41··on Magnetoelectric antennas could transform how underwater robots talk
The sea is a very hard place. Heavy Chains break all the time.
gonzo41··on I Will Never Use AI to Code
not the best analogy. It's like industry has an ox pulling a plow and we just check back at the end of the day to see what's happened to the field.
gonzo41··on HashiCorp co-founder says GitHub 'no longer a place for serious work'
Mee too. We just did a very similar migration at work it's incredibly frustrating, I've got all my CI ported over and now this.

MSFT should just create slophub.com they'd make money im sure.

gonzo41··on Mark Zuckerberg is reportedly building an AI clone to replace him in meetings
Someones gotta see what 40bn on VR looks like. turns out, it looks like shit. Thanks Zuck!
gonzo41··on OpenAI backs Illinois bill that would limit when AI labs can be held liable
The knowledge is one thing. But the competence of execution and the will to act are difficult to line up.

Yes there should be safe guards, but after a while you're jumping at shadows.

I'm more worried about depressed kids getting on chat and being encouraged to kill themselves than terrorist attacks.

We know what a cancer algorithmic social media is yet we don't act.

I doubt there will be any real and serious opposition to this bill, but there should be.

gonzo41··on Sam Altman may control our future – can he be trusted?
just like Zuck.
gonzo41··on South Korea Mandates Solar Panels for Public Parking Lots
People always end up petitioning for them to be cutdown because tree litter inevitably falls on cars. The best solution for cars is dense multistory parking.
gonzo41··on MoD sources warn Palantir role at heart of government is threat to UK security
They have magic consultant power mode.

In government you have to deliver, most of the time the mode of delivery is boring, small, conservative, and disjointed from other government groups because large efforts of work attract big budgets, oversight and doubt.

Consultants are magic, because they come with no baggage and promise the world. They take you hostage with sunk cost fallacy and then after years they deliver something.

At the end you're so tired you think that what they did was beyond your government agency and the cycle continues.

gonzo41··on How I write software with LLMs
Its exactly the same as 10 years ago and being able to google and search well for odd support bugs. Junior people think it's easy and they don't see the massive skill in framing questions and filtering.
gonzo41··on The death of social media is the renaissance of RSS (2025)
It just needs to be described in a more concrete way to people. Such as, You know how the podcasts you listen to keep getting updated on your phone? That's RSS. Imagine if other things you liked turned up when they were new and you had a lot of control over that process.
gonzo41··on How will OpenAI compete?
nah, open ai doesn't have a moat it has a brief window to get a lot cheaper to run or it's going to go pop when someone figure out how to do inference a lot cheaper.
gonzo41··on Todd C. Miller – Sudo maintainer for over 30 years
At the least, all the hyperscalers should be putting money into a fund for this sort of thing.
gonzo41··on Sometimes your job is to stay the hell out of the way
This just in: Wolves is the new hype word for the mythical 10x employee.
gonzo41··on Amazon cuts 16k jobs
They could put that engineering effort to unifying the AWS console. :D.
gonzo41··on Windows 11's Patch Tuesday nightmare gets worse
I was thinking about this very thing today. Personally, I see the Windows OS as a core competency of Microsoft. If the OS is bad, then the company is being run badly. In the same as when you go to a fine restaurant and the kitchen have the polished pots and pans you can see, generally things are going to be great. Its the attention to detail, If those small details are right, then the whole meal will be good. And currently the whole meal is crap with windows.
gonzo41··on 'The old order is not coming back,' Carney says in speech at Davos
What would you consider real decline?

I would say children having worse prospects than their parents at the same age is a good indicator of it. The big issues IMO are: The housing market locking out young people and The jobs market being brutal to graduates.

Things are not so great at the moment.

gonzo41··on BYD Sells 4.6M Vehicles in 2025, Meets Revised Sales Goal
I was always stuck by how different all the cars in the BYD line are. There are some pretty bold styling and fitout choices between the models.

I have mostly driven BMW and Toyota sedan and fwd's. And as you progress in car price and size its a matter of getting more features, and a better version over the cheaper model.

The BYD's all seem really different,

gonzo41··on BYD Sells 4.6M Vehicles in 2025, Meets Revised Sales Goal
I do like that BYD cars are opinionated which is a feature that is somewhat lacking in modern cars.
gonzo41··on Efficient method to capture carbon dioxide from the atmosphere
Well as far as storing it goes, if you can capture it, turn it into a solid and stick it in the ground.

Imagine you were growing a huge biomass that you harvest, dry out, and then store. We know how the bacteria and processes that stripped co2 from the atmosphere in the past, we just need to do that in a big way. Good thing we have places on earth that are huge and flat and growing algae won't be a problem.

And then we complement that with green energy and an attempt at net zero.

gonzo41··on Go ahead, self-host Postgres
Just use a pg container on a vm, cheap as chips and you can do anything to em.
gonzo41··on Upcoming Changes to Let's Encrypt Certificates
I agree, however the simplest place for a static bit of the web seems to be an s3 bucket with cloudfront or something similar.
gonzo41··on Meta shuts down global accounts linked to abortion advice and queer content
Nothing, the answer is nothing. The harm of Meta continues.
gonzo41··on Trillions spent and big software projects are still failing
Change your idea of success to being "Propping up the consultant market", and by that definition these projects are smashing it out of the park.
gonzo41··on 1M Downloads of Zorin OS 18
Plenty of those types floating around SV and tech circles and it doesn't mean he's wrong.
