gonzalohm··on Plan mode is dead
I do try to learn how systems work and remove "abstractions" as much as I can. I do that with coding and my personal life.

Actually baking is a good example, I used to be really bad so I spent time learning. I don't do it every day but now I understand how bread is made. I bought a 3D printer so I could print parts to fix stuff myself. I learned to do my own oil changes, I learned how engines work, etc.

My point is that I try to learn more, not less, which is what AI is trying to achieve

gonzalohm··on One Month Without AI
I don't use AI and the company I work for is doing just fine. Why don't you take a daily dose of Ketamine, that may give you interesting ideas like it does for Silicon valley "entrepreneurs". Don't you want to be the next Peter Thiel or Elon Musk?
gonzalohm··on Plan mode is dead
That's true, but it's also prone to over documenting. As an example, for some reason it always tries to include a diagram of the folder structure in the project. I think that's not really useful and it's something that changes so often it's not worth documenting
gonzalohm··on One Month Without AI
I think that comparing AI to cocaine is a really good analogy. It gives you that feeling that you are amazing and can do anything, but it's just a feeling, in the end you are just high and sooner or later will have to come back to reality and face a bad implementation or a hangover
gonzalohm··on Plan mode is dead
The spec will never be able to capture all the edge cases. The code is what runs. It also doesn't capture all the edge cases (that's why code has bugs) but it does a better job at that than documentation. Documentation can also become stale easily
gonzalohm··on Bug: Border radius has infected VSCode editor
I think the main complaint is why the need to change the UI. I happened with Firefox not long ago. They redesigned the whole thing and the only workaround is installing the Firefox UI fix addon. Same with Reddit. If you are going to make UI changes, make them optional, don't force them to your users
gonzalohm··on Bug: Border radius has infected VSCode editor
Why do you have automatic updates enabled? You should have learned by now that most software gets worse over time. Be selective about what you update
gonzalohm··on Plan mode is dead
100% this. Some people are basically adding AI as a dependency for their projects. They no longer understand the code
gonzalohm··on Ask HN: Who is smarter than you that you listen to what they have to say?
I'm pretty sure it's a joke post. Literally all the people OP listed are psychopaths
gonzalohm··on Jev Based Code Review
That's crazy and sooner or later will come back to bite you.

That's like telling a structural engineer that they don't need to review their plans.

If you don't like writing code or reviewing it, stop being a programmer, go become a manager or something

gonzalohm··on Toyota is taking the Corolla electric
I think the problem is not that people don't want electric cars. The problem is that people don't have a place to plug the car at home.
gonzalohm··on I am done with this shit
I mean, I'm going to rebuild it. But with just a light AI usage. The point I'm trying to make is that. Ok, AI may have saved time coding it the first time. But building an unmaintainable codebase is going to make you pay that time back with interests
gonzalohm··on I am done with this shit
That's not true at all. One thing is not understanding the language in which it was written and a completely different one is that even though it was coded in a language that I have proficiency in, the code doesn't make sense. It's just poorly engineered

I refuse to keep adding shit to the pile

gonzalohm··on I am done with this shit
The other day I inherited a repo from someone that left the company. The first one to be almost fully vibe coded.

It's horrible. It's over engineered in every way. It follows a completely different pattern than the other repos. It adds 10 CLI options that don't have any use (why does Claude add --threads to everything). It's impossible to follow the flow of the code. Of course, days after I inherited it, it broke so good luck to me fixing it I guess

gonzalohm··on Study: Young users (9 to 18Y) ditch Google for AI, with unknown consequences
That's the right way to do it. You go back and forth so you are not taking what the AI says at face value. The problem is that some people are. The other way I posted a problem in Slack and someone just replied "Claude says to use - -debug to find the issue" and I was like "- - debug is not even an option for the tool we are using!!"
gonzalohm··on AI Has No Wisdom and Neither Will You
I think this is a good point but we should see AI at the person level. For your example, not all companies/people manufacture, but everyone has access to AI. Soon a lot of people will lose skills to AI and at some point we would need them back and there won't be many skilled workers with it
gonzalohm··on Nearly half of young people trust AI over a human for fact-checking, report says
Google (or better, use Kagi) AI hallucinations and you will get plenty of news articles with examples. Most notable one recently is the one in which an AI hallucination almost triggered a US military operation
gonzalohm··on Nearly half of young people trust AI over a human for fact-checking, report says
I hope that's a joke. You are saying that AI, which is known to have hallucinations and is controlled by a company with interests keeps people grounded?

Comparing sources and availability of information is what keeps people grounding. AI is going in the opposite direction

gonzalohm··on Nearly half of young people trust AI over a human for fact-checking, report says
AI is also controlled by a company with interests. It's not going to be long until it starts spitting propaganda
gonzalohm··on Study: Young users (9 to 18Y) ditch Google for AI, with unknown consequences
But LLMs are getting pretty good at convincing you. By using AI you are basically being fed information. It may be accurate now, but you are losing the ability to compare results. Not only that but I would argue you are also losing critical thinking skills
gonzalohm··on Seattle Bans Rental Junk Fees
And without humans life would be just fine in this planet
gonzalohm··on Seattle Bans Rental Junk Fees
Shouldn't there be a kid fee then? Kids are likely to cause damage and everyone is subsidizing it.

It should just be common sense. You have a kid or you have a pet. They damaged the property, you pay it.

gonzalohm··on Don't Use AI to Write
That's not the argument in the article. Not only that but coding is deterministic up to a certain point. Once the project becomes complex, it becomes harder and harder to account for all edge cases. Sometimes it requires heuristics that are not deterministic, etc. There are infinite ways to implement the same requirements.

That argument is like saying that weather is deterministic. It is if you know every single variable, but that's impossible.

gonzalohm··on Don't Use AI to Write
The article opens with

> Writing requires thinking, don't let an AI do the thinking for you.

And then the author goes on to admit that they use AI for coding. Does coding not require thinking or what?

I agree that we shouldn't be delegating thinking to AI, but stopping at writing seems disingenuous.

gonzalohm··on The senior engineer death spiral
I don't agree with that advice.

Interviewing sucks. I know, if you currently have a job then you don't lose anything. Other than precious time and I already feel like I don't have enough free time, I don't want to invest the remaining interviewing.

I have been in a few companies and yes, sometimes getting a promotion is literally impossible. I remember one company that didn't give me a promotion until I threatened to leave.

But if you find the right company, then you shouldn't even need to ask for a promotion.

And lastly, I would hope you are working for a company that you care about. That makes it more complicated to find a replacement

gonzalohm··on Disney+ changes subscriber agreement to allow ads on every plan
Not the same though. A lot of people are just too lazy to cancel. If Disney had to terminate all the subscriptions that would probably have prevented this type of behavior
gonzalohm··on Senior Engineers Are the Next DRAM Shortage
Yeah, the "but this can be done in a day with AI" from management is going to get old soon
gonzalohm··on Senior Engineers Are the Next DRAM Shortage
> Every company on earth is about to want one who can drive a fleet of agents with judgment

Maybe seniors are seniors because they care about their work so they won't be using AI crap for serious projects

gonzalohm··on Everybody's Lost Their Minds
I think the main problem is a conflict of objectives. AI companies need you to use more tokens so they are not going to improve that. They are optimizing the models to get as close as possible to the point in which people would stop using them because they are useless but without crossing that line.

Proof of this is the amount of unnecessary tasks that Claude does just as an excuse for not doing a good job doing the tasks that we ask it to do

gonzalohm··on How, Exactly, Could A.I. Kill Us?
I think that makes sense, but still, you would expect a hunter to know how to hunt. I'm talking about people losing their skills for the job they are supposed to be doing without gaining any new ones
