gongdzhauh··on The Sun Ra Arkestra's Maestro Hits One Hundred
I just got to see Sun Ra a couple weeks ago in Central Park. They still put on a good show with a lot of the details you are describing.

For anyone interested in something similar, check out Shibusashirazu Orchestra from Japan. Very similar performance of a conductor, lots of solos, dancers, etc.

Do you enjoy getting paid for your labor? I'm sure journalists do.
gongdzhauh··on I spend £8,500 a year to live on a train
So is the university experience when you are the same age as most fellow students.

I don't think one or the other is a superior way to spend ones formative years, though doing the train thing might make more sense before going to school, as he may form relationships in school that he won't want to give up for riding a train.

gongdzhauh··on Ask HN: How do you come up with side project ideas in 2024?
The idea here is that you are tracking zone workouts per week rather than per workout like the default Apple fitness app does?

That's a pretty great example of finding some existing app, focusing on one aspect of that app, and making it better.

You can say the same thing about professional athletes. Sure, there are bench players in the NBA that would love to start for the Warriors for half of what Steph Curry makes, and they'd probably do a pretty good job. They're amazing basketball players after all. They're likely in the top 1,000 basketball players in the whole world. But they are probably not going to lead the Warriors to a championship. In some situations it's worth paying for that extra little bit of skill+talent.

I'm not sure if that small margin matters for running a major HMO, but I could imagine it does. And that small margin might just be having connections and friends. Maybe having those connections and friends is that extra value proposition that a good CEO brings.

gongdzhauh··on American bully XL dogs to be banned, Sunak says
I used to think this, but then I talked to a doctor friend and they explained that most of the dog bites they see in their hospital come from pit bulls with good owners. The dogs had never acted out in the past and were loving family dogs, until something snapped and out of seemingly nowhere the dog attacked someone.

The statistics on dog bites in many countries are also pretty clear that some breeds, like pit bulls and German shepherds are responsible for a disproportionate amount of attacks on humans.

So while the great majority of pit bulls are loving dogs without any aggression, I would never take the risk of owning one.

gongdzhauh··on Ask HN: Something you’ve done your whole life that you realized is wrong?
Basic supply and demand along with every study I've seen points to housing supply being one of and usually the main factor in the level of homelessness of a city.

As to San Francisco homeless coming from outside the Bay Area, that's true for only around 10% of the population. Most (70%) became homeless in San Francisco and many others became homeless in other parts of the Bay Area. See the `PLACE OF RESIDENCE` section from https://hsh.sfgov.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/2019HIRDRep...

gongdzhauh··on Ask HN: Something you’ve done your whole life that you realized is wrong?
I used to be a NIMBY. I thought small neighborhoods that have nice characteristics should never evolve or change, I thought places with tons of people were unpleasant to live in, I looked down on people who could afford market-rate new housing ("evil techies"), I thought new development increased rents (it doesn't).

20ish years later, seeing the homelessness, property crime, and housing crisis in the Bay Area, I am convinced I was wrong and wish that the area had built a ton more housing in the past. There used to be so many artists that were able to survive on a part-time cafe job back then. That's no longer possible and it's a bummer and makes the area so much more mundane.

I do still consider open space and parks important and valuable and don't support building new housing on a lot of those types of places.

gongdzhauh··on Ask HN: Those making $0/month or less on side projects – Show and tell
https://ideastrikes.com/ A project idea and brainstorming app. It's largely in an MVP stage and gets almost no traffic. I've done very little to promote it, and the UX can use a bunch of work, but I find it valuable for myself so I keep it online.

It's a tool that I use, and no one else does, but I get enough value from it that justifies the annual domain name renewal.

gongdzhauh··on Ask HN: Why do carpool apps always fail?
I dont know. I do know cities in the Bay Area had designated casual carpool that worked really well for carpooling into San Francisco in the mornings.
gongdzhauh··on Airbnb’s design to live and work anywhere
I don't think I'd ever book a place that didn't explicitly list Internet speed if I were to work there and I hate that AirBnB doesn't easily provide this information. The last time I booked a place like that they claimed to have "professional grade" Internet which ended up being a 15mbps down/ 4mbps up connection. Surprisingly (to me at least) that was enough for most video calls.
gongdzhauh··on Airbnb’s design to live and work anywhere
The idea that a neighborhood's character needs to be preserved is exactly the kind of logic used to justify redlining.

"Random" people should be able to buy property and use it in the same way that existing owners can.

gongdzhauh··on Airbnb’s design to live and work anywhere
What kind of actions are you considering that do not affect the market? Government housing affects the market by creating artificial supply. Regulations affect the market. just about anything that the government does will affect the market.

If you believe that housing is a basic right and everyone should be housed, then relying on supply and demand is not going to work. There's nothing inherent about a market that would house everyone, if anything, a market would reach an equilibrium where supply meets demand at some point where some people are not able to afford the supply and suppliers do not have an incentive/are unable to meet the price point of the remaining demand.
