gomerspiles··on Taiwan is heading toward an energy crunch?
Geo location aside, putting things off shore is really a way to drive up cost such as maintenance like mad and it makes even less sense when you are working with large surfaces rather than something designed around having height and wind tolerance.
gomerspiles··on Taiwan Makes the World's Computer Chips. Now It's Running Out of Electricity
China seems happy to export solar panels to anyone.. Taiwan would probably not like to be a big importer of something it can't procure from other trade partners at similar prices though. I think Taiwan wants tariff wars with China to reduce economic ties.
gomerspiles··on 'Students who use AI as a crutch don't learn anything'
I suppose a headline that doesn't have much to do with the content is also such a technology?
gomerspiles··on We need a real GNU/Linux (not Android) smartphone ecosystem
This is GPL code so decompiling isn't necessary or the problem.

Accepting over the wall low quality code and having a submitter for it who may know nothing about it makes it difficult to work any of this low quality code into the mainline kernel via its resource starved processes.

gomerspiles··on New HBO Documentary Claims Bitcoin Creator Satoshi Nakamoto Is Len Sassaman
I'd categorize a cypherpunk as a very specific form a cyberpunk, so to me that's normal journalistic form to use both terms at some point in an article.
gomerspiles··on The other British invasion: how UK lingo conquered the US
My teachers only commented/deducted if I mixed spellings in a single essay. If a teacher can't teach someone who uses either variant they probably have a stark educational deficit themselves.
gomerspiles··on Intel's latest flagship 128-core Xeon CPU costs $17,800
Spending this much on a server's CPUs has been a pretty normal thing in DC/server rooms for a very long time, the rise of X86 in servers is a similar cheapening like the rise of ARM. It actually meant a lot of redesigning of applications to work with many entirely separate machines instead of the smallest large server that could cover the full load and maybe around an application process per core, all sharing direct access to the same storage, etc.
gomerspiles··on NSO Should Lose Spyware Case for Discovery Violations, Meta Says
We are seeing justice from the many ways. There aren't many people who appreciate waiting on justice in crimes that are ruining a lot to steal a little.
gomerspiles··on Cloudflare auto-mitigated world record 3.8 Tbps DDoS attack
Why keep running an attack that didn't even work? Every second probably causes a loss of some bots up to a point..
gomerspiles··on NSO Should Lose Spyware Case for Discovery Violations, Meta Says
Maybe I deceive myself when I think its too early to know if the Marshall plan through Glasnost was the intelligent half of an eternal cycle.
gomerspiles··on Ask HN: What happens to ".io" TLD after UK gives back the Chagos Islands?
It doesn't really track that the original creation of .io being sordid means a political change won't have implications, (possibly even) modelled on and/or justified by the questionable history..
gomerspiles··on I Exited the Cloud
Unless I missed something this is a VPS in a cloud, so really its not about replacing hardware to get back up.

There's certainly an interesting problem of scale and redundancy where I think you need 3+ half full racks to really be efficiently running in DCs and then have to consider how their markup relates to your inefficiency if you are running a lot less.

gomerspiles··on NixOS is a good server OS, except when it isn't
Funny, I can imagine bash is a real improvement on ansible. I once started with bash, switched to bash in ansible and then to "good style" ansible and then to a nixops cluster.

There wasn't really a good point between bash and nix.

gomerspiles··on Pledging $300k to the Zig Software Foundation
Most memory safety errors are from not being able to test things like whether you are really dropping references in all cases or whether your C++ additions are interacting with each other. C is not safe but it is safer than C++. Rust is not going to stop all run away memory possibilities but it isn't going to hide them like a JS GC.

If your goal is to ship to most users something that kind of works then there are certainly complex solutions that will do that.. If your goal is memory safety that's more like every device working as expected which is done with less bloat not more.

gomerspiles··on Pledging $300k to the Zig Software Foundation
There are developers that earn that much, and the probability goes up at MS, Mozilla, etc, but I think a lot of qualified experienced Compiler developers exist who are earning less than the 150k a year when you consider the global market and smaller compilers. But the over all cost of a developer is not just their salary.

Really though I've found jobs similar to compiler developer for an ANSI standard compiler at big tech to include a lot of hazard pay for how disagreeable the job actually is compared to one with more freedom.

gomerspiles··on Dockworkers at ports from Maine to Texas go on strike
Apparently the nature of markets is offensive when the description of them doesn't go along with pavlovian expectations?

I've met a lot of people who couldn't find the job they wanted in the place they wanted anymore and joined Tech along the US coast, for the predominant wages which are a factor of supply and demand.

gomerspiles··on ScanOSS spams OSS projects for using profanity
On the plus side, adding profanity once it is scanned for sounds like another way to weed out some commercial use without explicitly weeding out some commercial use..

That could be handy to an already annoyed maintainer.

gomerspiles··on Pro bettors disguising themselves as gambling addicts
Fine, but then the US has spent a terrifying amount of my money on sports and I want it all back if the point of their sophisticated pro-social spending (which strangely has to include private ventures getting handouts) is actually to extract wealth from the poor and the weak.
gomerspiles··on Dockworkers at ports from Maine to Texas go on strike
Er no, not really (past results != future results).. This high pay has worked out because there are jobs to move people to because demand has so far been expanding. If we are sick of the new output then your job will be filled by someone willing to take minimum wage.
gomerspiles··on California bans legacy admissions at private universities
Grades are almost guaranteed at Harvard Undergrad. A grader who gives out any Bs or less for any properly submitted paper can expect an outraged Professor to make them stop before he has to deal with the backlash which may include a lawyer.

This may vary by department or over time, but I think there's no reason to believe a Harvard Undergrad Alumni you meet ever did any college level work.

gomerspiles··on Amusing Ourselves to Death (2014)
That's a problem, but I think the problem is checks and balances for actual repairs to the checks and balances that would restrict a role are prohibitely hard to make while privilege escalations enlarging a role are at best temporarily denied.

Mr Trump was supposed to be picked up by a military tribunal and probably executed. Whether that tribunal system is overreaching would have been an excellent discussion, after the execution.

gomerspiles··on Amusing Ourselves to Death (2014)
Biden was never an entertainer like the other 2 demented old men (entrusted with WMDs) under discussion.

If we send you to space you'll have to pass a fitness test.. Because we aren't stupid?

But sure, anyone in the middle of a psychotic break who can't tell fact from fiction should be fine for the entirety of national interests. Shoot down another plane for the old Gipper!

gomerspiles··on I Am Tired of AI
Right, AI is really just what I use to replace google searches I would have used to find highly relevant examples 10 years back. We are coming out of a 5 year search winter.
gomerspiles··on Amusing Ourselves to Death (2014)
A demented figurehead with other people behind him directing the show. It's as if acting was the perfect training for the worst idea for a position in a system of checks and balances.
gomerspiles··on Everything you need to know about Python 3.13 – JIT and GIL went up the hill
Single core containers are also a terrible idea. Life got much less deadlocked as soon as there were 2+ processors everywhere.

(Huh, people like hard OS design problems for marginal behavior? OSes had trouble adopting SMP but we also got to jettison a lot of deadlock discussions as soon as there was CPU 2. It only takes a few people not prioritizing 1 CPU testing at any layer to make your 1 CPU container much worse than a 2 VCPU container limited to a 1 CPU average.)

gomerspiles··on It's hard to write code for computers, but it's harder to write code for humans
Sounds like you have an explanation of how painful documentation is.. But how do these axes work?
gomerspiles··on Binance founder 'CZ' leaves prison on Friday
AFAIK significant banks didn't really shut down over FATCA, some have paid fines or higher tax rates and most of them do the minimum for anyone who matches any of the criteria for persecuting a possible US person, within the limits of the institution's local laws, if any.

From a general government structure POV, I respected a Congress more than the prevalent US views, but I don't respect the US Congress any more.

gomerspiles··on Legalizing sports gambling was a mistake
Every zero sum game has some side effects people try to focus on.. When I look at the number of children who have been abused for the Olympics, I think there are better ways to have an international convention and to push a healthier level of fitness.
gomerspiles··on Legalizing sports gambling was a mistake
Sure, the stock market is clearly grounded in a positive sum game of enabling more investment options. Things like whether to penalize day trading for its zero sum aspects or appreciate it for side effects are an argument in legislation/regulation debates.
gomerspiles··on Legalizing sports gambling was a mistake
What is bad for society is zero sum games. They are profitable for individuals but take the same or more from elsewhere so they raise nothing. There are a few zero sum games where we think the side effects are good (i.e. in the pricing of stocks,) but in general they consume societies best minds in return for no progress.
