golfer··on Kick the Shit Out of Procrastination
For years I was a major procrastinator to the point that it was really affecting my job performance and my relationship.

That all changed when I got a sleep evaluation and realized I had severe sleep apnea. My quality of sleep was terrible. As a result I had zero motivation.

I got a CPAP machine, and after an initial period of adjustment, it was a profound change. The year after I received the machine was the most productive in my entire life.

Take sleeping seriously. It may help you in ways you never imagined!

golfer··on Apple introduces 8-core MacBook Pro
But look at what we got in return... The laptops are now 1mm thinner than they were before!
golfer··on Apple introduces 8-core MacBook Pro
100% agree. I'm typing this on a 2015 Macbook Pro, and holding on for dear life, even as it has started alerting me about servicing the battery. It's a great machine. I tried using the touchbar on my son's newer MBP. It's awful, and not meant for serious use. His laptop has been replaced once already due to keyboard issue, and starting to show defects again.

That's a fair point.
golfer··on PHP in 2019
Exactly. See: Wikipedia, Facebook, WordPress, etc. People talk crap about PHP but it is a workhorse of the web.
golfer··on PHP in 2019
So much of the web is powered by PHP. Wikipedia (MediaWiki software) and Facebook are two of the largest footprints of usage. And of course, WordPress. PHP has a lot of firepower behind it.

Truly disturbing.

Getting downvoted here, would love to know why.
golfer··on All Chromebooks will also be Linux laptops going forward
Macbook Pros cost far more than Chromebooks. MBPs are 4x to 10x the price. They shouldn't be compared apples to apples.
golfer··on Internet Explorer Browser Collection
Connections were much slower back then. Sometimes you'd go a few seconds or more without anything happening on the screen. The loading animation was nice so you knew your browser wasn't frozen.

Regardless of our disagreements on Tesla -- this is a great list and really interesting to see all these OEMs, in order. Thanks for this good stuff. Upvoted.

I didn't know Peugeot was the oldest of the gang!

Tesla is not a startup! It's been in business for 18 years.

The fires aren't just in the paint shop. They are all around the factory property. Inside and outside. Garbage fires on the lot happen about once a year.

Regardless, you are trying to say that paint shop fires mean they just need a new paint shop. What I'm saying is that their entire manufacturing operation is amateurish compared to the rest of the auto industry.

"He's just doing what a CEO does."

I disagree. At a certain point, Musk turned the corner and became delusional. It's beyond simple boasting now.

golfer··on Tesla is raising up to $1.5B through convertible note and share sale
Tesla's manufacturing capabilities are child's play in the automotive industry. Nothing Tesla has done here is revolutionary. Their quality control is abysmal compared to other major OEMs. They make the Model 3 in a tent. There are regular garbage fires at their Fremont plant.

And there was another one in February this year.

Here's my take on Tesla. It's an 18 year old company that has never been profitable on an annual basis. It's had 4 profitable quarters out of 72 tries.

It has over $9 billion in debt. The future is bleak with these financials.

Musk has accomplished a lot, absolutely. But as a thriving business, it's a failure.

And lately, Musk's ego has really shown, and not in a good way.

golfer··on “The days of being rewarded for owning a Tesla are long gone”
Tesla is burning cash at an alarming rate. The question is if there exists a medium-term future at all for this company.

Musk himself said last year that Tesla at one point was single-digit weeks from bankruptcy.

golfer··on “The days of being rewarded for owning a Tesla are long gone”
"In January 2018, for example, Tesla’s Impression score — which asks US adults if they have an overall positive or negative impression of a particular brand — sat at 15. After a couple of discernible drops, the brand’s Impression score has decreased to nine, making it eight points lower than the present sector average (17)."

"At the beginning of the year, Tesla’s Reputation score — which gauges if people would feel either proud or embarrassed to work for a company — was 22, a couple points higher than the industry average. Today, however, Tesla’s score is 16, placing it a couple points below the automaker sector at large."

Also, see the Q1 earnings results from earlier this week, which were awful.

golfer··on “The days of being rewarded for owning a Tesla are long gone”
In a vacuum, yes. But if you look at the large amount of evidence about Tesla's brand and consumer sentiment, the brand is taking a beating lately. It's a tangible shift.

Amazon had losses for 5 years in the beginning of their existence, and then showed profit

golfer··on Tesla Posts Big Quarterly Loss as Its Electric-Car Sales Lag
Specifically what remains?

They are basically the only OEM pushing self driving without lidar.

Their manufacturing facilities are childish compared to other large automakers.

Solar City, powerwall, and the solar roof are huge money losers and barely make a dent in the P&L statement.

Maybe just the brand name? But will the brand have the cache once it suffers bankruptcy? Maybe it will.

Do you also love it when Musk calls people pedos? What about when he lies about taking the company private on Twitter? This is the narcissism you enjoy?
golfer··on Tesla Posts Big Quarterly Loss as Its Electric-Car Sales Lag
Tesla has about $9B in debt. They are not an attractive takeover candidate. They've never turned an annual profit.
golfer··on Tesla Posts Big Quarterly Loss as Its Electric-Car Sales Lag
I think it's unlikely they'll be acquired. Tesla has about $9B in debt, had never been profitable on an annual basis, and most other automakers are plowing forward with their own EVs.

I don't see much upside in acquiring Tesla. I expect chapter 7 bankruptcy (liquidation), or chapter 11 if Elon can pull the ripcord soon to have some money available to weather the restructuring.
