godDLL··on List of games that Buddha would not play
Can you build your life and friends around that? Then it's a real game, the kind people play seriously.

Buddha talked about the games that put you in a magical forest of your own, using your mind to trip for the play of it. Buddha wouldn't play recorded music.

Recorded music is not happening. Buddha would take up a flute and jam with a band though.

So is your gaming more like recorded music listening activity, or more like something to bring people together and organize your life around?

That you know. I don't know.

godDLL··on List of games that Buddha would not play
You're most probably right, to a degree.

If it were a knobhead that codified it, though it would have been some rare kind, where his result is good enough to get the message through, if you stop to think about it for five minutes. That's an improbably good result, for a knobhead.

So, maybe no knobheads involved. :)

godDLL··on List of games that Buddha would not play
This seems to be about tripping. Buddha wouldn't go tripping as a game. Not paying attention. Embodying a thing made up.

Instead, Buddha would always be playing a game. A game of not tripping. Of being present. Of listening to what's happening, and embodying such.

There is in that vein a game I've first seen being played no the BBS forums. It does not have a name beyond "the game". It worked as a social way of troll control, the same concept as a Buddha's game but for social groups.

It doesn't work like that no more.

Buddha would say this is because you're trying to guess what the other's thinking, no doubt.

godDLL··on The Google home page is 500K
I propose this exact scale, in the interest of productive discussion:

15-75 ms GOOD: (no thoughts had in that time)

75-150ms OK: oh, there it is

150- 250 NOT OKAY: wait, did I…

250- 500 VERY NOT OKAY: could I have typed something better?

>500+ ms ABSOLUTELY DEPLORABLE: is this thing on, is it working still?

godDLL··on The Google home page is 500K
Or you could say, be doing your average of 7 to 15 searches a day, as an office worker. So you've waited some on 5 to 10 of them. No big deal.

But then the guy next to you is a coding intern. He averages 150 to 400 searches a day. Maybe one every couple of minutes, or every five minutes.

That guy would be pissed. All the time.

godDLL··on Ligatures in programming fonts: hell no (2019)
He is not your boss, so chill.

But if he was, it would be OK, no?

godDLL··on Ligatures in programming fonts: hell no (2019)
It's OK with nVim in Terminal.app on OSX, when you set a nerd-font of some sort. Has presentational ligatures, doesn't interfere with editing.
godDLL··on Ligatures in programming fonts: hell no (2019)
You and the parent comment are polar opposites, I see.

How about it's fine, as long as I can still put my cursor in between the two underlying characters (edit them separately), and the resulting digram doesn't look so different as to be distracting?

godDLL··on Ask HN: Top Skills to Learn for 2022?
2022 is going to be even more about communication, with many of you working remote.

And unstructured, dispersed, realtime communication is not going to cut it.

The skill to develop is time-boxing and scheduling communication, as well as avoiding communication silos.

godDLL··on Why Zulip will stand the test of time
I got off it, even though it's second to none in it's niche.

It turns out I just don't have the time/patience for online software. It didn't do a good job offline, they have no native client for OSX, I just don't have the learned tolerance for all this. Even though it's good.

Still sucks to use, if you use it a lot.

godDLL··on Plans you're not supposed to talk about
If you're out on a trail, where your environment is the trail, and your compadres are your compadres, sure talk to them. You have shared goals, your adversity comes from the non-sentient or sub-human sentient environment. Truth is clarity, clarity is action, action is goal.

But then you're not out on a trail, your environment is other people, and your compadres are transient. You need to have a public face, a policy for your sentient environment. And you want to save the truth and clarity for when you have a thing to do with someone that shares your goals. Obfuscation leads to non-interference, leads to less adversity, smoother action, closer goal.

There are many levels and gradations to this. Push it too hard for the situation at hand, and you get confusion that leads to demoralization, and mass hysteria that drives harmful public policy.

First we farm the land, then we domesticate the animals, then we govern the people. The toolkit is the same toolkit.

At any given time some people are your land, some are your animals, and some are your compadres or adversaries. You don't owe any truth to your enemy, nor your sentient environment.

This is indeed very difficult if you're high in openness, but that's how it was before you got here and it keeps on rolling like that. There was no reason it should change, so it didn't.

It's not like deception came into disuse at any point. Lying is what it is, human. Part of the way communities work, and social dynamics develop.

What was the point of the article? Acceptance?

That's an individual thing. A situational thing. You shouldn't just roll with deception, but you should expect it everywhere.

godDLL··on Tacit knowledge is more important than deliberate practice
Tacit knowledge is the difference between making a decision and then acting, vs being free of the need to make a decision and acting right away. As in successfully.

Judgement is exactly the opposite of tacit knowledge.

godDLL··on Japanese scientists develop vaccine to eliminate cells behind aging
You should understand that there's a hard limit of how much of it is usable. Get too much in, something will never again wake up. You can't be all-around immune, that's not how it works. Unless you alter how it works, you won't ever be.

I'm not here to talk you out of your disability.

I'm here to point out that it doesn't actually exist, because you can work at it and improve. That's not a disability, at that point. This is not to do with what you're born with, but what you're raised with.

This is conditioning. I am a sample of one, but there is no contrary evidence that I can find; and plenty to support my experience.

It _is_ very nice code to look at, come to think. I would have Fish installed, if only for the scripting aspect.

But do show what you come up with. I am very into how people use automation in daily life.

godDLL··on Show HN: Console Daylight Hours Clock

godDLL··on Show HN: Console Daylight Hours Clock

FYI fish is a scripting language that doesn't have to be your shell to run this script

godDLL··on Command palettes: how typing commands became the norm again

godDLL··on Command palettes: how typing commands became the norm again
That's right. Did you see/use Fish as a shell?

I'm having much fun scripting in the Fish language at the moment, and using the shell in interactive programs.

That's the spirit!

If you are successful, and it is a literal translation I'd like to add it as Suntime.ZSH

If you end up formatting it differently, or doing it significantly differently I'd still like to see it.

Can you please report back here when, and if you get to do it? I'd like to see how it went. <3

godDLL··on Aphantasia
Well, there really is no boundary of insanity. Not one that you can define clearly, anyway. You shouldn't be afraid of yourself, that's not productive to learning. You're not that many people, hardware and software and all that, that's nonsense. There isn't a war going on inside you unless you imagine there to be one.

Be more bold.

I was like you, very ambitious. Started with a cube, after many attempts getting nothing saw something incredibly vivid, very much like lucid dreams that I've had when I was younger.

And then three months of nothing again.

I got SO EXCITED. It's there! I was right, people condition themselves largely, into a form of acceptable experience. But there is more.

So I took smaller steps. A point. A spot of magnitude. Add color. Add one more spot, at a measure from the first. Rotate that around, then rotate that in three dimensions. Trace letters, one by one. Read backwards the result. Light a surface, texture a surface, bend a surface.

The smaller the steps the more success you'll have. It's important to feel grounded, and it's important to be motivated to invest the time. Success is non-negotiable, it has to be there.

Frustration is the mind killer.

godDLL··on Aphantasia
I started with a journal, 5 minutes or so of practice every 2 to 10 days.

First three I spent with my eyes closed, boxed breathing and not thinking of anything. It is hard to engage your mind in something while it's thinking this and that. That has to stop first.

Then I'd try to localize a point. Move it around. A spot of my attention.

Then try to understand what it would feel for it to be red, or green.

Then I'd add a second point, and spread them apart or move them in closer together.

Then I'd make one larger, a spot. The other smaller, and move one around the other.

All of those are exercises for different days, and are progressively unlocked by succeeding at the previous exercise, not once but thoroughly.

Then you could try tracing letters, imagining yourself following the motion.

Putting letters together, one after the other.

Reading that backwards.

You should expect just that to take about 6 months of practice. Then it gets easier faster.

godDLL··on Aphantasia
To be motivated to invest the time you want successes. Small ones will do.

You can't be failing all the time, that's frustrating.

godDLL··on Aphantasia
How do you approach learning?

I'm very good at learning, can I maybe help? Talk to me.

godDLL··on Aphantasia
You have wings. Don't talk yourself into not trying flying.
godDLL··on Aphantasia
Practice takes care of that.

Start with a subject that is simpler than faces, and progress incrementally.
