gnubison··on Arena allocator tips and tricks
Is Linux designed in such a way that less-than-page size allocations never fail? How would that work?
gnubison··on “Make” as a static site generator (2022)
For completions sake, though, the easy way to do it is:

    foo`'bar
The empty quotes make foo and bar separate words.
gnubison··on Decoded: GNU Coreutils (2018)
Why do you need to remove all of these from the environment?
gnubison··on Exa Is Deprecated
Vi is in POSIX, it has been open source since 2002, and some version of it truly is on every UNIX system.
gnubison··on Why Tcl?
Although Lua patterns are quite elegant and, in my opinion, more readable than normal regex. Despite having a small string library, Lua still works for many use cases.
gnubison··on Imaginary problems are the root of bad software
“Imaginary problems are the roots of negative developments”
gnubison··on Why Perl?
If only there was some well written book about Learning Perl, or well written documentation in the form of manual pages (see perldata).
gnubison··on Initial support for guided disk encryption in OpenBSD installer
OpenBSD does not support jails or ZFS. Those are FreeBSD features (although perhaps NetBSD supports some of them too?). I really like OpenBSD but I think it’s counterproductive to lump them together: they are very different.
gnubison··on If you're happy with OpenBSD, probably any computer is good enough
What configuration debt does OpenBSD bring to your mind?
gnubison··on Lingua Graeca Per Se Illustrata
The book also includes a map of the places mentioned, at the time of Classical Latin that the narrative is set in. I’m only about half way through, but there really aren’t that many cognates. An aha! moment every so often, sure — like silēre -> silēns -> silentem -> silent — but it’s not like I read through and it only makes sense because of cognates.
gnubison··on GNU nano is my editor of choice (2021)
For me personally, the godawful default syntax highlighting is … quite unfortunate
gnubison··on If PHP Were British (2011)
I find this interesting because I (and most Americans?) see BE as much more “posh” than AmE … I guess I’ll be looking out for actual word differences/etymologies more now
gnubison··on Advent of Code 2022 is nigh
Other comments haven’t pointed this out, but the key thing is that each account gets a different input (so it's a little harder to cheat).
gnubison··on The plague of emoji insertion in French docs
Oh, “tag” made my brain parse as HTML tags. TIL
gnubison··on Typing “old” (space) into iOS Safari crashes the app
Good thing this acronym distingui- oh.
gnubison··on The plague of emoji insertion in French docs
> Unicode has language tags that you can embed in documents, those are deprecated and they were never well supported,

Huh? MDN doesn’t mention this … why are they deprecated?

gnubison··on Why does calloc exist? (2016)
Prescriptivism much? :p
gnubison··on <i>: The Idiomatic Text element

gnubison··on Migrate from Linux to FreeBSD
Note that OpenBSD now uses the much smaller doas instead.
gnubison··on Cat9: A command-line shell written in Lua
Where does the reference to the tails come from?
gnubison··on Teenager solves stubborn riddle about prime number look-alikes
Thank you!
gnubison··on Teenager solves stubborn riddle about prime number look-alikes
What is the stronger version?
gnubison··on Welcome to Královec
“Mordor” and “little Mordor” on the map sealed the deal for me
gnubison··on Leap: Neovim’s Answer to the Mouse
> Or d7w, or c9j… I can’t count seven words or nine lines as fast as I can just tap vwwwwwwwd or shift-vjjjjjjjjjc, because in the latter case I only have to pick out whether the cursor has reached the target, allowing me to blast out four w, then three, then two, with increasing precision as I converge.

No one actually counts :) For vertical motions, I use {/} and search; horizontal motions can use w/W/b/B/e/E, t/f/T/F as well. If you’re counting, you’re doing it wrong: big numbers can’t be recognized quickly, small numbers it’s faster to press ‘.’ than to hit the digit.

gnubison··on How to build a personal webpage from scratch
Or Caddy, if the documentation is correct …
gnubison··on SQLite: QEMU All over Again?
Fossil is decentralized, just like git?
gnubison··on Mle is a small, flexible, terminal-based text editor written in C
Counterpoints:

* Asciinema text uses the user’s preferred font instead of whatever monstrosity of a Comic Code font the developer happens to like

* Asciinema text can be selected and copied

* You can zoom in on it and it’ll still be high quality

etc. Arguing against Asciinema is like saying you prefer when people take screenshots of their Gnome Terminal windows instead of inserting code blocks into their blog posts :p

gnubison··on Bash one-liner to produce a list of HEX color codes that read like English words
And preferably use fileinput for the stdin so that you can name files on the command line as well
gnubison··on Neovim 0.8 Released
But then what would we talk about? The update?
gnubison··on SQLite Doesn't Use Git
Well, it takes like 10 seconds to learn Subversion to a usable level. So you could argue that it is a superior system … everywhere it’s viable.
