gnubardt··on XMPP creator's "Locker" -- personal social media aggregation platform
ThinkUp(http://thinkupapp.com/) does something similar, though with a focus on analysis. It retrieves your data from different sources (facebook, twitter) and indexes it, so you have a copy you control. Once you have a copy of your data you can present it anyway you want, see who you interact with the most, etc.
gnubardt··on What I learned from watching six hours of Starcraft
HD's starcraft videos are really enjoyable. His commentary seems pretty professional (don't watch sports so have no basis for comparison) and reveals elements of play I was totally unaware of before.

gnubardt··on US states: If they were countries
New York, too, has a divide between the Southern ("downstate") area of the state (New York City and the surrounding metropolitan area) and the Northern ("upstate," though this is sometimes used as a casual description of any place north of where one is). The two have different priorities for funding (the south needs transit subsidies, the north agricultural ones) and very little compromise (nor between parties). There are many parts of upstate New York that are closer to Boston than The City and root for the Red Socks.
gnubardt··on Does email address obfuscation actually work?
Cory Doctorow wrote about this in a column last year: http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2010/dec/21/keeping-ema...

He's had the same public email address published without obfuscation for more than 10 years. He describes his anti-spam setup which has served him reliably and argues that the nuisance imposed on correspondents by scrambling his address isn't worth it.

gnubardt··on Impossible for the HN crowd: Do nothing for 2 minutes
Workrave[1] and antirsi[2] have helped me take breaks like this regularly. Beyond the wrist relief it's nice to take a short break and refresh my mind before continuing work.

gnubardt··on Trunk.ly Keeps Track of the Links You Share Online
This is great! Is an HN importer coming :)
gnubardt··on Should Younger Developers be Paid More?
I've noticed (in several years as an intern software engineer) that it's responsibility and foresight that separate junior and senior level developers, technical skill less so.

Having in depth skill with a new technology is certainly a desirable attribute but I'd rather have the reliability of a n experienced developer (especially since they should be able to pick up something new).

gnubardt··on [dead]
It's billed as an introduction to computer applications, not an introduction to computer science or programming.
gnubardt··on Paul Graham's Hackers and Painters is $9.49 on O'Reilly's deal of the day.
That's for the kindle version, but the paperback edition is $11 [1].

gnubardt··on Ask HN: Who's Hiring? (January 2011 Edition)
Brightcove (an online video platform) is currently hiring in Cambridge, Seattle and London.

http://brightcove.com/careers

I work in Engineering and it's a blast! We're mostly using java and flex with python at times, but the scale we operate at means it's always interesting.

gnubardt··on How an Engineer Does Pizza
Slow rising is a great tip and it works wonders for bread as well. A great first bread recipe is the no knead one from the nytimes: http://www.nytimes.com/2006/11/08/dining/081mrex.html

Letting dough sit overnight works wonderfully and people have been doing it with pizza dough as well: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/05/19/dining/19pizza.html

gnubardt··on Vagrant is a tool for building virtualized development environments.
I have an Archlinux base box available here: http://gotanysnacks.com/vagrant/

Also, it's well worth the effort to learn Chef (or another automated provisioning tool) if you haven't already. It makes working with Vagrant way easier and saves you time whenever you create a new environment. Plus you can use the same recipes on a production box, so the effort isn't wasted.

gnubardt··on The Largest Prison Strike In American History Goes Ignored By US Media
There's also a good interview about the strikes on Democracy Now with prisoner advocate Elaine Brown.

gnubardt··on What OOP Isn't
he did link to another post he'd written elaborating on the subject

gnubardt··on YouTube Lifts Time Limit for Videos
Or even a professional online video platform if you need more control over quality and branding. There are several providers who offer plans starting at or less than $100/month.

disclaimer: I work for Brightcove

gnubardt··on Tandberg attempts to patent x264 open source algorithm
Were it granted, the patent would still be a threat, even if it wouldn't hold in court. Organizations that can't afford the legal fees to retaliate against a patent suit are often forced to settle.
gnubardt··on Hackertopia: Creating a City as a Startup
Jane Jacobs is essential reading for anyone interested in city planning. A lot of the physical layout and design of 'hackertopia' (layouts encouraging people to interact, emphasis on multi-modal development, de-emphasis on cars) seem influenced by her work. The Death and Life of American Cities is a good place to start.
gnubardt··on Hacker's Guide to Tea
yeah, green tea ice cream is great as well and contains lots of milk (and sugar).
gnubardt··on How to Catch a Cheater
It really bothers me when people cheat in engineering classes, or really anything where your competence (or lack of) could affect someone's wellbeing.
gnubardt··on Anic -- Faster than C, Safer than Java, Simpler than *sh
VHDL, a hardware description language can be used in the dataflow style and models the parallelism found in hardware.
gnubardt··on Ask HN: Any good math jokes?
whats a chefs favorite triangle? isauceles

how did the abelian group get to work? it commuted

why do addition and the integers carpool? because theyre a commutative group

gnubardt··on Stateful: Flexible Hosted Dashboards (in 48 hours)
Good point. The demo accounts for Splendid Bacon (http://news.ycombinator.org/item?id=1801964 also from the rails rumble) made it much easier to understand what it was.
gnubardt··on Programmers: how to make the systems guy love you
Totally. As important as logging is to profiling and debugging a system, collecting metrics is invaluable for keeping a system running. Being alerted to potential (or actual) problems can allow an admin to respond to them effectively, rather than trying to patch things together after it's hit the fan.
gnubardt··on RVM for Windows: vertiginous's pik at master - GitHub
Using a virtual dev environment (with vagrant) seems like a good move if you're stuck on windows. You get to develop with software that runs on linux using whatever tools you're comfortable with on windows.
gnubardt··on Faster Web Development With Virtual Machines at deviantART
I love vagrant! It was super easy to create an archlinux base box and i've been using chef to automatically provision environments. Setting up the environment for a new project takes minutes and is both totally automated and separated from my actual OS. Thanks!
gnubardt··on Reminder: Today is the deadline to tell USPTO to end software patents
Don't forget to CC licensing@fsf.org, so the FSF gets a copy and the USPTO knows there's a large organized body opposing software patents.
gnubardt··on Staying Healthy and Sane At a Startup
have you tried yerba mate?
gnubardt··on Paul Graham on trends for the future
there are are startups (like 3Play Media) that are working on automated video transcription.
gnubardt··on Meat based diets made us smarter
with the stigma placed on smoking in many societies smoking could in fact inhibit ones ability to breed (or at least influence it).
gnubardt··on The absolute bare minimum every programmer should know about regular expressions
vim can be a powerful tool for visualizing regular expressions as well. paste in the text and set incsearch and set hlsearch to match on partial expressions and highlight matches. this allows you to distinctly see the effects of a regex as you type it.

also, python's regex module can show you how it interprets a regular expression by passing the re.DEBUG flag to re.compile:

  >>> import re
  >>> re.compile('a*b+', re.DEBUG)
  max_repeat 0 65535
    literal 97
  max_repeat 1 65535
    literal 98
  <_sre.SRE_Pattern object at 0x100460230>
