gnubardt··on The American suburbs are a giant Ponzi scheme
The Power Broker by Robert Caro is a fantastic biography of Robert Moses, the person who set the template for this kind of development. Though in power in New York, the projects he built (highways, parks, bridges, public housing) was at a scale never seem before him. He figured out how to cut through municipal red tape to build at a large scale using public money.

Not that he wasn't a terrible person. But he wrote the rules that allowed a lot of this kind of development to happen.

gnubardt··on OS X – Safe, yet horribly insecure
found this to be salient, there's a lot of malice to be done in plain sight of an ignorant user: Root access is only needed if you want to modify the system in some way so as to avoid detection. Doing so is by no means necessary however, and a lot of malware is more than happy to operate as a standard user, never once raising an elevation prompt and silently infection or copying files or sending out data or doing processing, or whatever malicious thing it may do.
gnubardt··on Protolol Jokes
Why did the two lisp atoms lose all their money?

They got consed

gnubardt··on The Temptation to Cookie-Cutter
I think a lot of people actively seek that consistency, especially while traveling. Knowing that a McDonalds is a McDonalds wherever you are provides a safe choice for a traveler (especially since they're everywhere). That's what a chain provides, consistency across locations, not a unique experience.
gnubardt··on APIs and SDKs Built in Boston
Brightcove (an online video platform based in Cambridge) has APIs for content CRUD and player customization. There are open source SDKs available here: https://github.com/brightcoveos
gnubardt··on Google And Amazon May Have Just Handed Apple The Keys To The Cloud Music Kingdom
It's interesting to see Amazon & Google directly competing, to the point that Google rushes a seemingly incomplete cloud music offering (also without label consent) to counter Amazon's early control of the market.

They're also competing in cloud infrastructure, android app markets and streaming video services. Their fundamental services are not that different, both centered around search, though they don't really compete for it. Amazon is a retail service but part of their effectiveness is showing you what you want.

gnubardt··on Brightcove Granted Broad Patent For Online Video
Yeah, they just posted a correction, it's up from 400 million/month.

gnubardt··on Joi Ito Named Director of the MIT Media Lab
They've done it before http://www.boston.com/news/globe/city_region/breaking_news/2...
gnubardt··on Showoff
python -m 'SimpleHTTPServer' 8080
gnubardt··on Life beyond HTTP 1.1: Google’s SPDY

    curl -I
is an easy way to do that as well.

It requires fewer keystrokes :P

gnubardt··on Ask HN: How to stave off decline of HN?
Or a karmic penalty for upvoting a comment. That way you have to be respected by the community before you can upvote a thread. Maybe it would help curtail negative or snarky comments, if only because people upvoting have been around longer.

Stackexchange kind of does this. You need a certain (low) amount of karma before you can post certain types of submissions.

I think it's important to let new users have a visible voice, but giving older users greater powers for moderation might help preserve the older attitude of the site.

gnubardt··on Netflix Gets Into The Original Content Game, Buys Upcoming Show For $100m
They'd have some clout when negotiating with ISPs if they have content the ISP's customers want.

Like Cablevision & Scripps http://www.thewrap.com/tv/article/scripps-cablevision-deal-r...

Or ABC http://www.mediaite.com/online/no-oscars-tonight-for-new-yor...

gnubardt··on Happy Hackers Love Whiteboard Wallpaper

gnubardt··on Apple Keyboard in pure CSS.
Saw a cool presentation at Hack And Tell tonight: Rule 110 in only css3 http://elilies.com/rule110-full.html
gnubardt··on Delete Button. Yammer take a hint.
Technical considerations aside it's still good practice to make it easier for customers to cancel. It makes them feel more comfortable signing up. Joel wrote a few great articles on it: http://www.joelonsoftware.com/items/2006/08/23.html
gnubardt··on Ask HN: Jobs & Startups in Seattle (urgentish)
We've got a few open positions in Seattle at Brightcove: http://www.brightcove.com/en/company/careers
gnubardt··on Tuple Spaces (or, Good Ideas Don’t Always Win)
Saw a cool presentation by Gary Warren King on AllegroGraph (a lisp based tripple store) last year. It stores RDF tripples, which seem to be a pretty powerful tool for modeling semantic relationships.

The slides and a recording are available on the lispnyc site: http://lispnyc.org/meetings

gnubardt··on Edsger W.Dijkstra - How do we tell truths that might hurt?

  "Simplicity is prerequisite for reliability"
is a great line from the article that's still accurate. Small (simple) changes reduce the risk of using continuous deployment. Code should be modular and decoupled.

There's a great section on simplicity in code in Stuart Halloway's talk from QCon SF last year: http://qconsf.com/dl/qcon-sanfran-2010/slides/StuartHalloway...

gnubardt··on Amazon launches Prime instant videos, unlimited streaming for Prime subscribers
Clients still need to authenticate when they start a stream, amazon could use that information to approximate traffic.
gnubardt··on Ask HN: Is TDD/BDD hampering your startup's agility?
If RSpec is too slow to wait on you could use autotest, which automatically runs tests when a file is saved. There's also a plugin for it that uses growl/libnotify to display the results.
gnubardt··on Don't waste your time by cd-ing in the terminal
Another time saver is to have a function that calls ls after cd'ing:

  c(){ cd "$@" && ls;}
This has probably saved me days over the years, as I almost always want to list a directory after I change into.
gnubardt··on Apple’s Big Subscription Bet: Brilliant, Brazen, Or Batsh*t Crazy?
Netflix uses drm on their players (through silverlight in a browser). HTML5 video doesn't have hooks for drm at the moment.

You can restrict access to content (by using a TTL or encrypting the video with Apple HTTP Streaming) but someone could still capture the stream. Their stream using silverlight is encrypted and offers the kind of security that makes content owners happy.

gnubardt··on JSONloops: real-time, multi-user audio sequencer for node.js and the browser
It's cool that a song made with this is in structured text (json), you could share a song through github and people could fork it to remix!
gnubardt··on Pinboard Creator Maciej Ceglowski Talks About Why Boring Architecture is Good
Using a common design for architecture is kinda like using a well known design pattern or framework. It allows a new developer to easily understand your project.
gnubardt··on Breaking the web with hash-bangs
history.pushState() and history.replaceState() are introduced in the html 5 spec, so not all browsers support it yet.
