One could test this manually with a whip, right? Attach the ball at the end and try to crack it.
gniv··on Exercise intensity modulates interorgan communication and is associated with
I for one want to live longer and better than the hunter gatherers of yore.

The point of all these articles is that if you exercise hard you get extra health benefits. Even folks that move all the time and clock 15k steps per day may not get those benefits because it's not the right exercise.
gniv··on AI Isn't Outthinking Mathematicians. It's Out-Remembering Them
That's insightful. AI is teaching us things about our own intelligence by simply evolving under our eyes.
gniv··on France's tax authority had data stolen on 680k taxpayers
> but forced to lock wages not to do that.

What does that mean exactly? State wages?

gniv··on Bluesky's active user base is shrinking as its focus expands beyond the app
Well the blocklist description is "men up their own assholes acting like white boys", so what should I conclude?

Then again if racists block me it's probably for the best.

Same here. Battery health is 84% which is not disastrous. But charging is a chore. The charging port doesn't work half the time (a problem in the car especially). I would also like it to be lighter, which I probably won't get.

Blocking is way too harsh a mechanism. If they wanted to innovate they should have invented some soft-block feature.

Thanks to those lists I am blocked by 165 people. I don't insult anyone, I don't even swear. I suspect I get on these lists simply by being a white male (which is I guess obvious from my posts).

In terms of politics, yes. It's a bit like the worst of reddit. Nobody reads the article, everybody gets outraged in the same cliché way. If you try to provide nuance you get derided or blocked. (Blocking seems to be held in high esteem, which I think is also part of the problem.)
gniv··on DeepMind's WeatherNext model achieves breakthrough forecasting cyclones
Yes of course. My comment was facetious.

Are Sol and Fable lucrative? I suspect they also are valuable (to clients) but not lucrative (yet).
gniv··on Changes at Google DeepMind: Demis Hassabis from CEO to Chair, Jeff Dean departs
> Superintelligence, if done safely, lets us solve most of our problems.

This is an interesting problem to explore. IMO most problems in the world are political. It's still likely that SI will solve them but it will take (many) years.

Just because it is (was) close to all-time high doesn't mean it's high. Look at the P/E[1]. The market does not think it will grow long-term.

[1] And yes I know it's artificially lowered due to the mark-to-market gains in investments, but even without those it's low compared to peers.

gniv··on Taste Is All That's Left
> To my eye, it seems to be the author's first blog entry with obvious LLM contributions.

Not to me. It's actually quite sharply written. I enjoyed the style a lot.

gniv··on Exercise works for depression. So why isn't it treated like real medicine?
Yeah me too.
gniv··on The Productivity Mirage
I think most professionals are conservative when it comes to their tools. Mastering them took a long time and it's hard to change.
gniv··on Exercise works for depression. So why isn't it treated like real medicine?
Eh, more like cringe. They'll get over it. You'll also get better.

Those are retail prices. I expect data center prices to be a tenth or even a hundredth of that. And probably quite different even in the same region.
gniv··on The bread paradox: why convenience always wins, and why SaaS isn't doomed
Ignoring the bread analogy, isn't decoupling a likely outcome? I make and deploy my own SaaS and pay somebody to be on-call for ongoing maintenance. This would argue for more standard interfaces and modules so that maintenance is cheap.
gniv··on Show HN: Opening lines of famous literary works
This is called incipit, right? In both English and French afaik.
gniv··on Why I'm Forced to Say Farewell: Google Management Has Lost Its Moral Compass
> It's not possible for a corporate entity to have one.

Is it really not possible? Lots of corps are controlled by one or two people. They can decide what the company espouses, no?

gniv··on Mag 7 starting to underperform [pdf]
Some of this might be mechanical since so much money went into the chip companies.
gniv··on DSpark: Speculative decoding accelerates LLM inference [pdf]
I don't think this question would get to the reason. There could be one or two persons in charge who simply shape the culture of the company, including how much to publish.
gniv··on Noam Shazeer Joins OpenAI

How recently have you looked? I think nowadays it's quite good.

> I don't think they 'index' videos, per se.

I'm pretty sure they do. They already index metadata (you can see it in the web search results) so indexing the transcript is relatively easy.

gniv··on Sleep research led to a new sleep apnea drug
I bought a connected oxymeter (viatom). I wore it overnight on my finger with the phone nearby. The graph on the app shows exact values through the night so you can see how many time oxygen drops and for how long. It's not quite as good as the real thing but should give you an idea, and it's cheap.
