gnad_sucks··on High-Energy Lasers
> Is it effective practice to shoot targets that don't camouflage, don't maneuver, don't evade, don't shoot back?

You mean, like balloons?

gnad_sucks··on High-Energy Lasers
Thank you for your perspective, I agree on both counts. Sorry youre getting downvoted, but this is HN after all.
gnad_sucks··on [dead]
I would love to understand what they mean when they say "looks hollow". How can you tell what's inside by looking at the outside, short of the thing being transparent?
gnad_sucks··on Google's Bard shows incorrect information in its launch ad
Someone responded that Google is terrified of being left being Microsoft. I think that's hilarious because it highlights the thing google should actually be terrified of - the fact that it has lost the capacity to innovate (same applies to MS, FB, etc).
gnad_sucks··on Ask HN: What is a better, fewer-syllable name for ChatGPT?
Multivac.

gnad_sucks··on Meta shares rocket 25%, on pace for the best day in a decade
This is a company that has consistently lied about everything it can. I'm thinking things like ads views, engagement etc. Basically things that no one outside the company can disprove.

Now, the article says that the stock jumped on lower projected costs. Hmm I wonder if this company will lie about projected costs, which is something no one outside the company can disprove.

So yeah, I did read the article, and I agree the fundamentals didn't change much.

gnad_sucks··on Why I’m making my family German (2017)
No, there is NO truth to the statement. The fact that the USA also does other bad things had no bearing on who's at fault in this war starting or continuing.

The war started because Russia started it and continues because Russia continues it. Russia could stop it tomorrow if they wanted it. Ukraine doesnt have that option.

gnad_sucks··on Why I’m making my family German (2017)
> The combined actions of the US and Russia

Excuse me. The are the actions of Russia, not the USA. The USA, and other Western nations, are providing support to a country that wants to defend itself from an aggressor.

In 1939 when Germany invaded Poland, the UK and France did nothing to help. Let's not make the same mistake again.

gnad_sucks··on Tech Nation shutting down as UK government pulls key funding
I already have L1, but my employer won't sponsor green card. What are my options?
gnad_sucks··on Tech Nation shutting down as UK government pulls key funding
Speaking of which, what's the move like? Can a company sponsor a green card if they like the candidate enough? How does this work?

Yes, I'm one of those people you're talking about.

gnad_sucks··on Why Finland Selected the F-35A (2021)
Damn it you were a fraction of a second faster.
gnad_sucks··on Why Finland Selected the F-35A (2021)
Another point against the F-35 - it's not Rust.
gnad_sucks··on Gödel's solution to Einstein's field equations (2021)
Studying a spacetime diagram is hard work. It's a lot easier to just say "I never understood why it's so certain" and leave it at that.
gnad_sucks··on A Modern Compiler for the French Tax Code (2020)
Too good to be true.
gnad_sucks··on I lost $209k of my own money trying to start a business
With all these lessons learned, why did they stop trying? They didn't run out of money a they never left their day job.

Also... It's ok if you can't code and pay someone to do it, but why not learn the absolute minimum in order to be able to implement quick hacks when necessary? It's not like knowing how to code is a generic trait you're born with.

gnad_sucks··on Australians scour desert for dangerous radioactive capsule smaller than a penny
I understand where you're coming from. You're just asking questions.
gnad_sucks··on A Modern Compiler for the French Tax Code (2020)
Is the logic for such calculations known for the US? What about the UK?
gnad_sucks··on Australians scour desert for dangerous radioactive capsule smaller than a penny
I agree the two are different in some respects; at the same time I think the idea that baseless insinuations undermine the conversation works just as well towards news articles as towards HN users.
gnad_sucks··on Australians scour desert for dangerous radioactive capsule smaller than a penny
You think I'm not in good faith - that's fine.

But surely you have to concede that "I'm just asking questions" make it really easy to insinuate without directly stating, yes?

gnad_sucks··on Permission Slip: App to take back control of your data
Ok for mortgage but I had in mind getting better credit cards in order to get rewards. I do want to give these companies what they want so I can get better rewards.

I'm not saying the trade-off is worth it for everyone, I'm just saying there's a trade-off, unlike in advertising.

gnad_sucks··on Australians scour desert for dangerous radioactive capsule smaller than a penny
> Please don't post insinuations about astroturfing, shilling, bots, brigading, foreign agents and the like.

I think he's referring to this. Indeed, there's nothing wrong with asking questions. I imagine that "you're only asking questions" is a reference to an usual technique of conspiracy theorists of pretending they're just asking questions to defend against being called out on baseless accusations. "Are they putting something in the water that's making the frogs gay? I'm just asking questions".

We don't know the intent here, but I agree with him that "something doesn't add up" could be an insinuation of conspiracy theory, and so against the guidelines.

gnad_sucks··on Permission Slip: App to take back control of your data
Here's something I never see discussed. Assessing one's credit worthiness is naturally a data business. So, unlike for ads where companies knowing more about you has no upside, when it comes to credit the situation isn't as black and white. There's an actual trade-off. I DO want companies knowing how much I make because that's beneficial for me.
gnad_sucks··on Ask HN: What simple facts have you learned surprisingly late in life?
No it's not. Dictionaries are accessed by key whereas objects are accessed by field (which is a high level way of representing an offset in memory). So one of those two is at least 10x faster than the other.
gnad_sucks··on Ask HN: What simple facts have you learned surprisingly late in life?
Horseradish is spicy in the same sense as garlic is spicy, which is very unlike peppers.
gnad_sucks··on Ask HN: What simple facts have you learned surprisingly late in life?
I think this is one of those things that "isn't really proven" because it's obvious to the ones who do it, and the ones who don't feel better pushing the idea it's not proven.

I'm a very scientifically minded person, but I'm old enough to be able to confidently make my own decisions in some situations where "it isn't really proven".

Tell you what, stop flossing. When you get a really bad breath floss, and smell the bits that you find between your teeth. That's what rotting food smells like. Now, if I don't want rotting food in my living room, I certainly don't want it inside my mouth. I don't really need a scientist to make the call for me here.

gnad_sucks··on Ask HN: Forming a Delaware LLC and registered agent
How much are you paying for this?
gnad_sucks··on Wait, Are We Supposed to Tip 25% Everywhere Now?
I recently moved to the US. I hate tipping. At the same time I don't want to not tip when expected because I don't wanna become a pariah.

So, my approach is I don't go to places that expect tipping. If I go somewhere for the first time and I'm asked for a tip, I tip. And then I never go back there ever. Simple.

And I tell you what. If everyone did the same this is a problem that would solve itself.

gnad_sucks··on 1min high-intensity exercise 3x a week improves fitness as much as 3x aerobics (2016)
There's a lot of truth in what you're saying. But maybe they use calorie intake to mean "calories actually absorbed by your body", and not "calories present in the food you put into your mouth"? Just generally speaking it would be difficult to believe that calory absorption doesn't depend on anything.
