gmiller123456··on Will we have a negative leap second? [pdf] (2022)
"Add an entire day to the calendar, no one bats an eye. And one second and everyone loses their minds".

I think the main issue with dealing with leap seconds is really a lack of awareness. Our calendars are already full of idiosyncrasies, but we've learned to deal with them just fine. When UTC was created, so was Atomic Time (TAI). The overwhelming majority of systems are unaffected by leap seconds, for the few that are, it would simply be a matter of using TAI instead of UTC, and having software to readily convert between the two.

Astronomers use "Julian Days" and "Julian Dates", but they are not at all based on the Julian calendar. They are just a linear count of days which is easier to plug in to algorithms. It is quite similar to the Unix Timestamp, and it is quite easy to convert between the two: jd =(unixT / 86400) + 2440587.5; [1].

But astronomers have to deal with the non-uniform, unpredictable rotation of the Earth in some way. Leap seconds only help a little, and predictions can only be made a few months into the future, so it is necessary to download the latest Earth Orientation data from the International Earth Rotation Service [2].

E.g. For the Apr 8 2024 solar eclipse, some popular camera control software packages had old predicted values for the Earth's rotation. Some due to the authors not updating them, some due to old installations that didn't update the data automatically. That caused people who didn't notice the discrepancy to miss their shots.

Patreon is probably better, IMHO. From what I understand, Youtube Red pays out your subscription money proportionally based on how long you watch their videos. To me, that just seems to encourage them to waste your time, rather than focus information density. With Patreon you decide who gets how much.

It'd be more useful if they explained why some of the data is so inaccurate, so you could decide what to trust and what not to. In my neighborhood I found some houses not casting shadows, or partial shadows, lot of missing trees, and houses casting shadows onto themselves in ways they can't.

There's a lot out there, it is considered one of the worst US marine disasters in modern times.

Wikipedia is a good place to dig deeper, the article has over 60 references. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_El_Faro

The NTSB report is over 300 pages, I have not read it: https://www.ntsb.gov/investigations/AccidentReports/Reports/...

When I hear of the preference of form over function for data, I think about the sinking of the SS El Faro. The captain relied on weather data from a Comercial service because they were pretty. On the "black box" one member of the bridge had said something about the weather stats and another person mocked "oh, but that's not a pretty graphic" (the captain was below sleeping). They had tried to get the captain to agree to change course many times, but he always refused telling them to come back if things got worse, unaware of how bad it already was since he was below deck. He had never bothered to notice the data his service provided was several hours old, and ended up sailing right into the eyeball of a hurricane.

I use -pattern_type glob on Windows without issue. Not sure how long I've been using it, at least a year, possibly two. This is what I use:

    ffmpeg -framerate 30 -pattern_type glob -i '*.jpg' -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p out.mp4

If you want an all sky solution, zwoastro.com ships an all sky lens with many of their small sensor planetary cameras. There's also a selection of software to handle the photos, making time-lapse, uploading etc. It came in really useful for seeing the Aurora outburst. Here's a short write up I did for my local club recently: https://m.facebook.com/story.php?id=101640086556073&story_fb...

I'm also working on a new one that uses an ASI533 Pro and a 4mm lens from a mirrorless camera to get better quality images.

gmiller123456··on Raspberry Pi Ltd is considering an IPO
They have specifically limited consumer's ability to purchase the Zero's, so there's definately more demand for them than they're selling.
gmiller123456··on Raspberry Pi Ltd is considering an IPO
While the Arduino can replace a Pi in many projects I've seen, if you're reason for dropping th Pi is to avoid the issues corporations bring to the table, you're not going to be any happier with the Arduino.
gmiller123456··on Raspberry Pi Ltd is considering an IPO

I just can’t come up with any compelling use for a raspberry pi.
The practical purposes for an RPi have diminished. They're still good for when you need something small, light or low power. But the market for refurb mini-PCs really replaces most of the instances where you're just looking for a cheap, but semi-powerful, computer.

And things like the ESP-32 have reduced the Pi's practicality on the other end where you just need something powerful enough to read and transmit data from a sensor.

3,5,7 line up on the diagonal, leaving 2 as the only other prime. So people using physical patters are likely to choose them. Not to mention any mathematically inclined person may also choose all primes.

Since I'm not starting a new major project, it's a pointless question to ask as I'm not going to research what I should use. But you completely ignored my question, why do you choose Postgres?

The UI of the kiosks are quite blatently designed to try to sell you more stuff than to make ordering easier. Give me the same interface you give the employees and I'd be a lot happier.
gmiller123456··on McDonald's and other big brands warn that low-income consumers starting to crack
Inflation keeps going up if people don't change their spending habits in response to prices going up. I actually switch to eating at McD's more, as a replacement for others, because they haven't raised their prices much. I've written Five Guys off completley. Not so much because I can't afford it, but because they'll keep raising their prices until people respond.

No. Before Apple got their monopoly they absolutely begged developers, even tried to shame them, for not developing for MacOS. They evened threatened lawsuits against Microsoft.

gmiller123456··on Decimal Time
As someone who's done quite a bit of astronomy programming, I can say the Julian Date is not really a replacement for decimal time. The Julian Date really isn't much different than a Unix Timestamp (in fact, you can convert between the two quite easily: jd = UnixTimestamp / 86400 + 2440587.5). They are both good for punching in to algorithms, but not good for direct use by people.

gmiller123456··on Where Have All the Websites Gone?
I've made the decision to give up app development and go back to plain old webapps. Google's requirement to update the "targetsdk" for every app appears to be a "war on free", as only people making money off their apps are willing to jump through such hoops. I expect the noose to tighten even more as more app developers comply. So rather than fight it, I decided to throw in the towel early. I expect Google will try to walk a fine line of getting the right number of developers to jump ship, but I'd expect to see a lot more hobbiests switching back to web development in the coming years.
gmiller123456··on Where Have All the Websites Gone?
Been trying Kagi for a few months now. Sadly, I don't notice much difference from Google.

For example, this past weekend I tried to work on learning some WebGPU stuff. The search results were filled with WebGL, WGPU, Three.js, Babylon, etc. stuff. The page might have contained "WebGPU" in a sidebar or something similar, but weren't about WebGPU at all.
