gmcerveny··on Ask HN: Devs/data scis who pivoted to a new career in 30s/40s, what do you do?
Definitely.

Even considering preparation for a graduate music program I had the option of taking fundamental music courses at nearby schools or studying with an independent teacher. Ultimately I chose to go independent. That let me start immediately and offered flexibility in my own daily schedule. The graduate program professors I spoke with gave no preference to undergrad vs just demonstrating knowledge.

gmcerveny··on Ask HN: Devs/data scis who pivoted to a new career in 30s/40s, what do you do?
Early 40s and I've been sort of backing into music with this 20 year arc:

  - Full Stack Dev
  - iOS Dev
  - 2x Music Tech Startup Founder
  - Music Tech Freelance Developer
  - Currently: Studying music theory, composition, and piano.
I might go to grad school for music/media, continue to study art/music independently, or explore professional arts careers.

I'm just constantly seeking alignment between my professional work and intrinsic motivations.

gmcerveny··on Ask HN: Who wants to be hired? (September 2023)

  Location: USA, Michigan
  Remote: Yes
  Willing to relocate: No
Technologies: iOS (Swift / Objective-C), Web (Javascript), Audio (MIDI, Max), Data (Python)
  Résumé/CV: on request
  Email: https://www.artfulmedium.com
I've been a technical co-founder on two startups. I also worked for Techstars and had a startup in Stanford's StartX. Open to all opportunities but would love to find a fractional role 10-20 hours / week.

Fantastic to see Michael Tyson releasing this update. I've relied on his contributions to iOS music app development tools (the amazing audio engine, audiobus, the spectacular sync engine) throughout my career.

Of particular note is the custom yearly / keep forever pricing model he is trying with this release.

gmcerveny··on Ask HN: How do you find freelance work?
I'm a full-time freelancer and I'm super specific on my niche, new music technology. I find that works pretty well. Sometimes I'm applying for gigs, sometimes folks just cold email me, and sometimes people refer others my way. But being a specialist seems to be the one thing that works best for me.
gmcerveny··on How I’m Learning ARKit
Sounds like good advice.

What are some of the AR/VR subreddits or chats you like?

gmcerveny··on Ask HN: What's your working day like?
Thanks for the note.

About 5 years ago I asked my friend to regularly sit with me. Mainly I just wanted the brain benefits of meditation. We looked up info online but then later visited some meditation centers in town. I happened to like the soto zen style the best and have adopted that practice since.

I work from home and although I'm on the edge of the city, there's not much near me except this awesome 7 mile paved greenway. So I mainly walk just to get out of the house. It's a nice time.

gmcerveny··on Ask HN: What's your working day like?
Profession: Music Tech Developer - Freelance, Remote

  6:30am : Wake up, sit (meditate > 10min)
7:00am : Make tea/coffee and breakfast for my wife, eat together, she leaves
  7:30am : Quick exercises
8:00am : (Sometimes 9a, 11a, or a combination) Meeting to plan the days priorities with either clients or my associate developers
9:00am - 12:00pm : Making things (researching, writing code, testing, taking screen shots / recordings, reviewing, committing)
12:00pm - 1:00pm : Lunch, often watch content on apple tv (youtube video, daily show, etc)
1:00-2:30pm : Making things (same as above)
2:30pm : Walk (<2 miles on path in front of house, audio book or podcast)
3:00-4:30pm : Making things (same as above)
4:30-~5:30pm : Deliverables (commits, uploads, emails, calls)
I love working on music tech and just chatting with someone about it gets me stoked to start building stuff. Those morning meetings with clients and my associates really help me focus.

gmcerveny··on Apple Worldwide Dev Conference 2017 announced
Labs. If you are getting deep into a framework you can usually go talk with the engineers that work on it.
gmcerveny··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (February 2017)
Is Pandora still expanding in St Louis? Would love to chat with anyone here.
gmcerveny··on Ask HN: Is it possible to transition from corporate job to self contractor?
I went from agency/dotcom work to independent contractor. I worked mostly on-site contracts anywhere from 3 to 18 months. Some jobs were through recruiters, some friends/network. All gigs paid significantly better than full time positions. I did this with an outdated stack, ColdFusion, from ~2005-2010.

I would like to be able to unfollow artists, or selectively follow from my library.

gmcerveny··on Becoming an iOS Developer
I'd order the steps 5, 6, 2...

1. Build an app in Interface Builder. 2. Learn Cocoa Touch. The breadth of the library is more intimidating than the complexities of Objective-C. 3. Learn C and Objective-C.

Then think about paying apple to develop, releasing products, learning how memory management works, adding core data...

Contemplating an iOS / sound book for this. Anyone else participating this year?

gmcerveny··on [Ask HN Commuters]: What do you do on your commute to work?
Everyday I take a 15 minute bus to a 15 minute train. On the bus I'll either veg out or listen to short podcasts.

Short Podcasts I recommend: -stuff you missed in history class -moth podcast -BBC global news

On the train, I'll read books off my hacker reading list (c programming, programming pearls, design patterns, etc)

gmcerveny··on Ask HN: Technomading?
Through independent contracting it's easy enough to just take 3 months off and travel off savings.

I've also had contracts that were almost exclusively remote work. I would check-in first and say "hey, are you going to need me in any meetings in the next 30 days, because I'm thinking of to [blank_city] for a bit."

They were always cool with it.
