gmatty··on Ask HN: what chair are you using for coding and how comfortable is it?
Does the dealer you went to happen to have a website? I was thinking of picking up a new chair myself.

gmatty··on Has Carl June Found a Key to Fighting Cancer?
Sorry about that. I can see how its unclear in the way it reads. I shortened a more descriptive title and lost the meaning. I was originally referring to how dramatic the treatment has been for those it has been effective in. I have updated the title.

wow. super cool
gmatty··on 6th Grade iPhone Developer speaks at TEDx
As someone who has written a game (To The Stars 3D on iPhone) and as someone who has gone through many different routes, I would suggest taking a look at Unity3D. They have a free version and they really take a large portion of the pain out of creating a game on basically any platform.
gmatty··on Pornification: Turning Instagram into Instaporn (Future of web)
I think the innovation in using words like that is to take a concept that might require sentences to explain and distill it into one word. I agree there isn't necessarily a disruptive breakthrough, but I think the concept is now more easily distilled to those not in the know. Gotta wonder if we're going to see companies specializing in the pornification of things now though.
gmatty··on On Porous Paywalls
I could probably clarify a few things. I built the paywall used at WSJ. WSJ's paywall is actually "porous" by design. The reasons for this have a lot to do with how news is discovered. Aggregators like Digg.com or Reddit.com can send a lot of traffic to an article but links don't get readily shared if they are locked behind a paywall. Search engines can also send a lot of traffic, but many, including google, won't index you unless there is something of value on the indexed page. This is one reason why you see a lot of sites having first click free, or first click from a search engine free, etc. Things that are considered in bypassing the paywall include request headers like referrer and cookie, query string parameters in the url, as well as ip addresses (what country you are in, etc). At one point if you were making a request from an airplane you would get access.
gmatty··on Steve Perlman unveils white paper explaining “impossible” wireless data rates
very interesting. It sounds like they are precomputing the streams into a single stream so that the interference at a given location only has to be calculated against background noise and not other signals. So in other words its not one signal overriding eachother, because there is only one signal at a given location and all devices know how to eavesdrop their signal out of the master one. Interesting concept.
gmatty··on Ask HN: Why should I defend a pay site model?
Guess it depends on what your product is. Evernote and Dropbox are both fairly successful and have premium products. The distinction is that they are marketed as free so as to attract and retain users, and the power users are the ones who actually buy the premium product. I would take a look at them to compare their numbers, product and target market (are you a consumer product? are you a b2b product?) to yours.
gmatty··on Revolutionary "Light Field" camera tech - shoot-first, focus-later
I'm not an optics expert, but couldn't this be used to generate 3d depth maps? By stepping through each field depth you could find the edges of objects (by how clear they were at each depth) and map those edges onto a mesh. Effectively, doing what the kinect does but without any of the infrared projections...

gmatty··on My Start-Up: 3000 unique users a day, only 3 offers?
dont stop. dont make excuses. don't doubt yourself. They are all a waste of time. Focus on the end goal and methodology for getting there. If you really want this, move in with housemates or figure out what you need to to save a little so that you can self fund for a while. Also figure out some reasonable numbers as to why you can make money doing your startup and how long you think it will take to pull it off. Double those numbers. Otherwise, you will need to be cannonball in the chest convincing to any investor worth pulling in to fund your idea. Find ways to check your gut instinct with numbers. Understand the inputs to the numbers and understand the trends in the numbers. Own the pain, own the glory.
gmatty··on Backward Steps by the WSJ and the NYT on the iPad
eh... not to crazy about the article. It makes some statements about how things were deliberately left out of apps without backing up that statement with a quote or anything by those controlling the app. Isn't it possible that these features were left out because the app developers simply didnt have enough time to add those features for the first release??

dear google,

please add an option so I can invert the x/y lookaround axis like I can do in a video game.

gmatty··on Why Paid News Online Will Not Work
I find the authors argument weak. WSJ.com has advertisements behind its pay-wall in addition to the subscription rate it currently charges subscribers. Additionally, pretty much all online news sites collect demographics that feed the ads that are displayed for the user. Ads are not targeted for the general audience like that in the print format.

In the case of wsj it would seem they are offering more generalized content in order to reach a wider audience to compensate for a potential niche audience saturation.

I think paid is definitely the future for news sites. Ad revenue brings in no where near the amount of revenue a paid subscription can generate per user. The question remains is there a hybrid model that can do both in a similar way that the airlines have pricing tiers on their seats to fill the planes (not everyone will pay for a first class/business seat, but that class generates way more money than all of coach). WSJ is doing selective free content and has a free registration that allows you to see a surprising amount of content, but what you get is not predictable (meaning when/if/what subscriber content will eventually be visible to the free registrant).

I would like to see a mainstream newspaper test a strategy where if you want the current news you need to pay, but over time (as less paying subscribers are interested), it is released into the free space to monetize potential ad revenue.
