Maybe but I once had an interview in which I was asked how to find how similar two text strings were (for search). I answered that I would use one of the algorithms from Apache commons text or within Lucerne which implement one or several of the appropriate distance algorithms. He told me he had written his own. I asked why he would do that when these algorithms were written by people who did intense research and the implementations in these libraries have been tested by more eyes than his could ever be. He said “what if I want it to run in Ruby?”...I was interviewing but this is a guy I would not hire. He was wasting time for his own amusement. Never assume people know to do the research on existing solutions. Many developers would rather work on their own toy solutions while avoiding the actual unsolved problems in their domain
People say this because they are ignoring the 90% of the factors they agree upon and so the remaining fractional differences loom large. Also photos are no substitute for real life.
I'm an amateur at all this (and maybe the article stated this explicitly), I use Garageband. I find the main reason to do your recording and mastering in 24 bit is so you have room to change the level of each track without the sum of them clipping. When you are trying to set the levels of each track you have two constraints if you use 16 bit. The first is you need to keep all of them low enough that the overall recording doesn't clip but you also don;t want to over compensate and use only half the dynamic range available in 16 bit.
Doing this process in 24 bit gives you a large margin of error to play with. No real point to keeping that for the recording people are going to listen to
If Facebook had existed in the 1960s, after the Warren commission report, would articles speculating that Lee Harvey Oswald was a patsy who did not act alone count as fake news?
I'm not ready to say fail but Facebook is not what it was. I go to it out of habit now and think very carefully before I post anything...then usually decide not to. It's boring. I think it will hang around like that land line phone number you had growing up (yes, I'm old. What of it?) but eventually your parents move to Florida and that number is gone. Facebook seems likely to degenerate into an old people's online contact list app
I find recently that on political issues you need to read Snopes carefully. Often the real answer exists in what they carefully avoid saying. There is no such thing in politics as pure "fact checking". There could be; but there isn't
I think they pursue the title of professor for 2 reasons:
1) For an intellectual there is no more awesome job/life than living among and working with other such people
2) Anything below full professor and you need to find another job in 7 years
HackerNews is selection bias central. I suspect the overwhelming majority of college students don't even know the term "problem set" :) Most of it is, read this book of literature and write something showing you both read it and have absorbed the latest fads in college politics and art criticism.
You assume the primary purpose of college/university is to teach. No. In America anyway, it is mostly a credential. The prestige and exclusiveness of your uni serves as a marker of intelligence in a society in which it can be legally treacherous to give potential employees IQ tests.
I will agree that for a significant minority of students the learning and learning to teach oneself are important. I doubt the top universities do a better job of this. From that perspective I think the main advantage of the sorting is that it is easier to teach if your students fall into a narrow band of ability
I watched several of the course videos and was struck by how long it's been since college and I did anything with matrices. I kept pausing to go look up what things meant and meanwhile some of his students were catching errors in real time in class
I can barre some chords but barring in the A major pattern is rough. Then my guitarist said "no one does it that way" and he showed me you press the three strings with your third finger while kind of hyperextending the joint...but my finger doesn't work that way!
Sorry for the late response. I haven't gone to the links yet but the quotes in italics give me pause. They seem to be at pains to state things in a way which looks like it means one thing but may mean another. The second sentence is a nice start to an investigation but is not evidence really, just a temporal association. The third sentence is about poverty, not integration.
The fact that the gap is larger in segregated districts is difficult to interpret without knowing if the comparison is to the population as a whole (i.e. blacks in the district to whites as a whole) or within the district (i.e. blacks in the district to whites in the district). I'd also want to know if how those districts compared to other districts. Were these high achieving schools? Low achieving? Somewhere in the middle?
This is literally what almost all persuasive writing is about. I cannot recall the last time I saw someone write or heard someone speak the words "let's have a discussion" to people who didn't already agree without really meaning "you people need to shut up and listen". I actually find it refreshing when people say that instead. But seriously who is writing to this standard we seem to have suddenly adopted for this one thing?
The problem is anger and offense are caused by, and mechanisms for dealing with, having our minds changed. The only things you can attempt to persuade someone to change his mind about, without making him angry, is something he doesn't much care about in the first place.
The racial achievement gap closed? That would be a huge story and I would be surprised if I missed it...unless you mean the gap closed within the school (i.e. not relative to society at large) because the remaining whites achievements were lower than the average before they fled, i.e. selection bias :)
I started playing a few years ago, not serious, mostly in support of singing. When I began I thought the A Major chord was witchcraft. How could my three gigantic fingers fit there? I don't know but somehow trying a lot made it work and now it's pretty easy. Muscle memory I guess?
I wouldn't be 100% certain but yes, it seems unlikely that sound could damage the part of the ear that is stimulated by the given frequency without you hearing it.
It's kind of a weird story. A bunch of people lose their hearing and the first and only thought is mystery weapon? There are a lot of things, including many common medications and infections that can cause hearing loss.
I love the description Goethe provides of Beethoven's personality. We've all met that guy, extremely talented, contempt for the world which you kind of admire but seriously dude could you give it a rest? I'm trying to enjoy myself...people are always the same. only the technology changes
I wonder if longer term this current trend of "desirable" places becoming more and more expensive will ruin them and currently cheaper places will become desirable? What made those areas desirable in the first place? Can those places stay desirable if they contain only old rich people? What's fun about a NYC without kookie artists?
The way it used to be is you would own a larger house to raise a family. Then your 2 kids would leave and you would sell and buy something smaller and cheaper and often in a warmer climate.
Your first sentence is just a long way of saying "you are wrong and I need offer no counter evidence because I am right"
WRT your second sentence you are clearly so deep in your own cognitive bias you can't see anymore. I'd enjoy seeing such a study. I've seen plenty of reports about stuff that happened in the past century that were obviously now misreported by the mainstream press at the time.
What, even if violent crime is up you know the downward trend will continue so pointing it out is fear mongering? Given the down votes we can consider the point made; people enjoy being outraged by things they disagree with
