globalnode··on Responsible Release of AI-Generated Mathematics
So it seems mathematics is a perfect playground for LLM's to show off their abilities. Is this the end of mathematics done by humans? probably.. but that still wont stop some people from going into the field, just like whats happening to computer programming. I find it strange that the two fields LLM's are built on are the two its trying hardest to replace humans in. Why will we have to teach mathematics / computing to the majority of kids at school anymore if we don't need a workforce competent in those skills? Will we just teach kids how to type fast so they can get the prompt in asap?

edit: also ive noticed when i ask llms maths questions they tend to introduces overly complicated things that arent relevant or make the problem harder. so maybe we will teach kids the basics of maths and how to interpret results? i am unsure.

re-read this a day later and ofc it still makes sense to me but really most of it is barking up the wrong tree, focusing on solutions (which we already know) rather than outputs. if i could delete it i would but oh well.
globalnode··on Netherlands bracing for potentially devastating US sanctions against the ICC
when israel and america both went on their insane run through gaza, venezuela and iran, the second thing i thought after feeling sorry for those people, was feeling sorry for israelis and americans. its going to be a rough ride getting out of this for both nations' people.

edit: and indeed the west in general, that has largely said and done nothing while watching events unfold.

globalnode··on Divide by depth for instant 3D
ive been thinking -- if i have a 3x3 matrix [1 0 q; 0 1 r; 0 0 1], when dotted with x, those rows are planes in 3d with normals n1=(1 0 q), n2=(0 1 r) and n3=(0 0 1). plane 3 is parallel to the x-y plane and 1 unit up. plane 1 is tilted by q and parallel to the y-axis, plane 2 is tilted by r and parallel to the x-axis. the intersection of those planes (i.e. the solution x) when calculating Ax=b gives an output vector b sitting in 3d space at b=(x+qz, y+rz, 1*z). since we always specify z=1 we have b=(x+q, y+r, 1). in 3d this is a linear shear because we are translating proportionally by z but because z always equals 1 in this case we effectively get a translation in 2d.

so as the other 2 helpful commenters also just said: 3d shears using linear algebra degenerate to 2d affine transformations when z=1 (or w in 4d)

globalnode··on Divide by depth for instant 3D
nice intuition there, this comment prompted me to consider a simpler example, 2d embedded within 3d. does the 2d plane (embedded in 3d) go through the 3d origin (where 0 maps to 0) and is thus a linear transformation in 3d but a 2d affine transform in 2d? it feels like this is the case?
globalnode··on Microsoft exec called AI scraping 'the largest theft of labor in human history'
Nice hopeful commentary there, I do appreciate it but...

> You work less than your counterparts centuries ago...

do I?

I'm not against the tech, I love the tech, I'm just not buying the marketing this time around.

globalnode··on Microsoft exec called AI scraping 'the largest theft of labor in human history'
In the 50's there were predictions that in 10 years no-one will have to work again because of the advances made in automation, like the washing machine for example. Any predictions of less work this time around are a complete joke.

Yeah don't steal my stolen stuff.
globalnode··on Microsoft patches Windows and Excel – breaks audio, remote access, and paste
Games I cant play on Linux are kernel level anti-cheat shooters. Anti cheat should be handled on the server anyway, no one should be installing that on their machines. Everything else works great!
globalnode··on After Math
Math is not dead, it (and i guess programming to a lesser degree?) is something people do to better themselves, akin to meditation. Just because AI can meditate (it cant) doesnt mean humans will stop meditating. We may become irrelevant in that AI can generate results and proofs that it doesnt need us for, but then AI will make itself irrelevant to us! The slippery slope slides both ways.

I was feeling miserable reading this thread until I saw this, thanks for cheering me up.

globalnode··on Houthis 'take control' of key island in global shipping route
Yes ofc its a world problem, and guess who the world is not going to be happy with?
globalnode··on Rust is tier-1 language at Microsoft
Yet another good reason for me to steer clear of the language.
globalnode··on Blizzard Workers Win Historic Union Contract
define livelihood, it involves a standard and cost of living that is different for different people
globalnode··on Blizzard Workers Win Historic Union Contract
in australia workers seem to have more rights. they have industry awards that specify minimum wage and safety conditions etc, they have the legal right to strike and the legal right for union/collective bargaining if they choose it, aka freedom of association. when i look at employment conditions in the US, it boggles my mind how workers there basically have zero safety net. its an extreme example of giving all the power to the employer.
globalnode··on I resigned from Anthropic today
im pretty impressed with the reasoning abilities of even the cheapest free models so im inclined to believe in 10 years we're going to have something pretty phenomenal BUT it wont be AGI in the sense that it has a personality and thoughts like a human. It just wont be. Its always going to be contrived and fitted by humans to perform a set of tasks. Maybe when physics and computing can create a complex enough environment we might stand a chance of having something whose sum is somehow greater than its parts but i dont see it yet. Our ideas are ahead of our technology, like its always been throughout history.

Has anyone considered they may be doing this intentionally as marketing? "look how uber our models are, they escape all our best efforts to contain them".
globalnode··on Ask HN: Are others seeing Google's reCAPTCHA rejecting Firefox users?
because of my privacy settings google search outright blocks me as a bot. the only way to search is through an intermediary like startpage. related because if it does give me the time of day i tend to then get endless captchas.

globalnode··on True Rate of Unemployment
In australia we have housing as an investment that pays off big. The more homes you own the richer youll be. Theres not much else here that pays off that well.
globalnode··on Fine, I'll build my own text editor
Which part is untrue? That theyre simple applications or that syntax highlighting and code completion are difficult?
globalnode··on Fine, I'll build my own text editor
The problem with writing an editor if you intend to use it for coding, is not the text editor itself, that's rather simple. The problem is code completion and syntax highlighting. Then whatever system you try to implement becomes just as bloated as the bloatware you're trying to replace.
globalnode··on True Rate of Unemployment
better off taxing people that own more than 1 property and leave people just trying to live alone.

ive got my own pwd file using a short shell script in bashrc that uses nano, gpg and /dev/shm to keep things in memory (hopefully). works great, is minimalist and there are no hidden surprises.
