globalnode··on Software Internals Book Club
I would love to see a maths version of this bookclub
globalnode··on If AI writes your code, why use Python?
you still need to look at the code oneday so id say c++ still would be a preferred target language even for ai. i know i hear a lot about rust but im still getting the idea its a niche language overall. i know people love it and point out its advantages, but sometimes good enough is good enough (i.e. c++)
globalnode··on YC's Biggest Scandals
not sure theres any value in criticizing yc on their own platform. not that i think theres much to criticize. they provide an essential service in connecting money to computer based business ideas. overall i think they do a good job and the news forum keeps it interesting for readers while serving a dual purpose. its a great idea. my only gripe is that its not emulated in many other countries!
globalnode··on AI is breaking two vulnerability cultures
yes this is what i was trying to say. its quite common on older client-server games to do this sort of thing. powerful ai models will just make the work to recreate/emulate servers faster.
globalnode··on AI is breaking two vulnerability cultures
not sure why downvoted. server emulators will become faster to make. protocol analysis will become faster as well.
globalnode··on A web page that shows you everything the browser told it without asking
id still prefer the information be inaccurate. since sites are rude enough to try and track me, the least i can do is feed them unique garbage.
globalnode··on Building my own Vi text editor in BASIC
obv my sarcasm was not detected
globalnode··on Life During Class Wartime
sometimes i wonder why i say such things on a venture capitalist forum. i must not like karma lol
globalnode··on Iran hit more U.S. military targets than has been reported, satellite images
those satellite images are from the "enemy" lol
globalnode··on Life During Class Wartime
this sort of article is ragebait for me. i dont understand how as a society we can let this sort of inequality run rampant. i mean i understand the mechanisms ofc but not the apathy. a wealth tax sounds like a great solution. people can still focus on acquiring stuff, we dont have to worry about how they hide the income and the theyll barely notice the tax anyway. then we'll have enough state money to care for these supposedly "mentally ill" people living on the streets. healthier happier society. as the article states: "no need for guillotines. yet".
globalnode··on Building my own Vi text editor in BASIC
cant tell if vibecoded or not, function comments seem slightly redundant, either way its a cool idea, cant wait to see the language server written in basic also :D
globalnode··on CARA 2.0 – “I Built a Better Robot Dog”
its a fantastic achievement and the guy seems amazingly talented, is it a big achievement? leaves me feeling flat... maybe im just jealous lol.
globalnode··on OpenAI president forced to read his personal diary entries to jury
i knew i should have learnt how to write klingon or drow as a teen.
globalnode··on OpenAI president forced to read his personal diary entries to jury
have to use a local llm for that if thats how you wish to use them.
globalnode··on Three Inverse Laws of AI
and this is why people do scare me.
globalnode··on Write some software, give it away for free
marketing. humans are quite reactive to certain stimuli
globalnode··on Write some software, give it away for free
linux
globalnode··on Write some software, give it away for free
its definitely a double edged sword. individual developers are generally screwed financially. if you can make something sass you might be able to monetise it but chances are theres a better free version floating around or that the majority of people just dont want to think about computers and will pay m$lop instead. you could sell your idea to investors i guess but thats heavy sales. should software dev even be a paid profession? with enough tools, automation would be within everyones reach, i think thats where we are headed in general.
globalnode··on Does Employment Slow Cognitive Decline? Evidence from Labor Market Shocks
> In America, however, anyone can become wealthy.

its mostly luck, not merit ;)

globalnode··on Y Combinator's Stake in OpenAI (0.6%?)
sorry everyone, sometimes i go down these rabbit holes
globalnode··on Does Employment Slow Cognitive Decline? Evidence from Labor Market Shocks
maybe class struggle was the wrong terminology, but the more i see of problems in the world the more i start to think its about money/power vs "all the other busywork" we get bombarded with daily.
globalnode··on Y Combinator's Stake in OpenAI (0.6%?)
i always thought there were two reasons for AI interest on HN.

1. since AI has captured the imagination of capitalists and they think this is the next industrial revolution, they gotta be in it to win it. combined with the fact that i believe most people here are wealthy or at least aspirationally so, that explained half of it.

2. the other half is that AI as a tech is interesting from a mathematical and compsci point of view, tho certainly not interesting enough to justify the proportion of topics about it here.

i guess i should add a 3rd reason.

3. ycomb has a financial stake in spreading the news about how wonderful this tech is!

lolol

globalnode··on Does Employment Slow Cognitive Decline? Evidence from Labor Market Shocks
never heard of the eisenhower matrix but my time management resonates with what you wrote. ill try forcing q2 stuff earlier as well as ive noticed it never gets done! yes, the default outcome is depressing.
globalnode··on Does Employment Slow Cognitive Decline? Evidence from Labor Market Shocks
i think people trying to argue that we would be more productive is a symptom of the productivity disease. where all we value is productivity and thats the only way we can justify more non-work time. i personally just think we should all have more time to do what we want, whether that is being productive on personal projects, talking to people, playing games, or doing nothing. happier people right? why should 10% of the richest people enslave the rest of us.

edit: forget dems v pups, black v white, democracy v communism, its all about class struggle, probably always has been. i bet those 10% can pick and choose how productive they want to be and how much spare time they have lol.

globalnode··on A desktop made for one
+3.5h extra battery life is a real measurable result! well done.
globalnode··on The 'Hidden' Costs of Great Abstractions
nice post, lately ive been dealing with concurrency, between threads and processes. trying to keep it cross platform as well, its a lot to learn. if you have large buffers and want to keep some semblance of performance, its VERY interesting understanding all the transfer mechanisms and cache levels involved. i feel these are the sorts of things my education skipped, it was all very focused on the static structure of objects not the dynamics of data transfer.
globalnode··on The 'Hidden' Costs of Great Abstractions
sounds like youre working at the wrong place. detailed computing knowledge and maths is essential in some industries and like you said, scorned in others. i couldnt think of anything worse to do with my time than spend all day with mba's or webdevs (lol im sorry thats unfair, web development is complex with all the callbacks and sync issues).
globalnode··on Windows quality update: Progress we've made since March
sounds painful, just searched on "how can i get ms office running in linux using wine" and the results included a containerised windows vm that looks very interesting. but yes i agree, they seem to have gone to a lot of effort to make office use a billion microservices that would be a nightmare to run through wine.

edit: nvm, the docker vm thing looks really slow, id rather use libreoffice (which is quite good really). and now europe is trying to cut the umbilical you can probably expect a lot more open source productivity stuff in the near future too.

globalnode··on Windows quality update: Progress we've made since March
yes at some point broken trust dictates that no amount of fixing will ever fix it.
globalnode··on Windows quality update: Progress we've made since March
>If I game doesn't run on Linux, I don't play it. Simple as that.

yes ive reached that point too.
