Good points, i like them, but i fear you were sucked in by low effort trolling. Your original point was clear, that fiddling with a broken system is a distraction from a better more workable system. If you try to begin to articulate a more workable system you'll then have to contend with a barrage of mindless ad hom and rhetorical rubbish... (ug ug socialism bad) so sometimes critiquing the current system is just easier.
I think op's argument was that the humans are in control already, giving them capricious instructions, and then that is being attributed to them being "capricious genies" as you say.
the way the us govt has behaved internationally i wouldnt be surprised if countries/people actively boycott made in america.. the market for us goods and services would definitely have shrunk.
its just ppl trying to be different from their boring parents. wish i had enough karma to flag them too but i keep getting downvoted into oblivion for making fun of written in rust posts
> LLMs can be good _domain experts_ when you build an LSP, but a) I wouldn't trust them blindly, and b) the quality of code is still very much your responsibility.
That's the feeling I have with these models as well. When I read about companies replacing devs due to AI I really hope its not actual coding/design jobs they're replacing. Unless they want to become evolutionary dead ends.
saw an ad today for some ear pieces that look like audio speakers but theyre actually cameras as well, so it seems manufacturers realise glasses will annoy people but arent giving up.
make software for yourself, learn maths for enjoyment. times have changed. i guess there will always be software jobs but they wont be the same as in the past. if youre thinking of a way to make money and earn prestige at the same time in the computer industry i dont know what the answer to that is.
if self teaching you need a book that holds your hand and doesnt try to put you through the usual trials of "lets see if you can figure this out yourself.. oh you cant? maybe repeat the subject next term", or major proofs left as exercises for the reader. get a friendly hand-holdy book. im reading linear algebra, theory, intuition, code by mike cohen atm (up to ch4) and so far between that and a chatbot for clarification/links, im re-learning the L.A. i should have learn't at uni but for whatever reason just did not understand back then. those courses move fast and if you get stuck somewhere its game over. i think L.A. is way harder than calculus as a beginner, but once things start to click and fall into place it starts to feel easier.
im constanty being asked to fill out captchas (which i close) and am accused of being a bot by many of the sites i visit, so i guess im doing something right?
I actually think ai and llm use benefit a small minority at the expense of the vast majority, and i like the tech but im not impressed with its applications. Agree you can fight whatever fight you like, but those problems you listed with fascism have been around well before llm's came along and fighting llm use wont solve problems with fascism it may just stall it a little. Its like youre focusing on the symptoms rather than the cause.
seems a lot of comments below with disdain for "bad" coworkers. every industry has them, but if theyre objectively bad why not get rid of them? surely some periodic review would do that. how did they get hired in the first place? perhaps hiring managers are the "bad" employees.. or managers that let them go on not performing are "bad". or maybe your expectations arent aligned with reality? who knows? the worlds a complicated place.
whenever i hear someone bad mouthing the germans about ww2 i wonder why living in a pity party becomes part of some peoples identity.. like they thrive on those feelings and have to reach hard to generate more of it.
whenever i see this i drives me away, i'd rather buy from a business that drew stick figure ads by hand. funniest thing i saw was an ai food ad and someone asked if the ai makes the food as well. the staff were actually miffed lol.
in games like wow where the more powerful you get the harder the enemies become, this reduces incentive to get more powerful. its a simple consequence so im not sure why they do it - probably to keep "time played" metric hovering at the desired level. which imho backfires when time played becomes 0.
defeating fascism should be tackled as a project called "defeating fascism" head on, rather than as "defeating their tools". ai is just such a generic tool that can be used in all sorts of ways to solve problems that are traditionally difficult to solve, thats why we're seeing it used everywhere right now. maybe once we have had our self inflicted extinction event we will put more care into teaching survivors of the importance of working together and all the other good things
im pretty sure in private companies people are vying for promotions and trying to out maneuver their colleagues in the eyes of management. just look at ai use, johnny knows how to prompt better than sammy, so johnny looks like a 2x more productive programmer. its every man, woman and child for themselves.
