glintik··on In 2019, Volkswagen decided to create a car OS. How’s that going?
Waterfall doesn’t produce bad quality software. And switching to agile will not cure their products.
glintik··on Ahrefs saved $400m in 3 years by not going to the cloud
«is what all cloud providers use» - many cloud providers can offer local ssds, i.e.: https://cloud.google.com/local-ssd

“multiple nodes only give you reliability, not performance” - this, actually, is not true. Even mysql can offer ways to tune and gain performance improvements.

glintik··on Ahrefs saved $400m in 3 years by not going to the cloud
Don’t agree. Multiple database nodes with enterprise grade SSDs is a way better in many terms.
glintik··on Ahrefs saved $400m in 3 years by not going to the cloud
And very wide choice of hardware and tuning abilities. Also network config can speed up overall performance greatly.
glintik··on “Clean” code, horrible performance
Significant performance and memory penalties.
glintik··on “Clean” code, horrible performance
Most horrible mistake is not in the list: immutability.
glintik··on Databricks counts being laid off as “red flag”
Ha-ha. Never say “I was layoff”. Say “I left the company due to lack of new challenges”. There are many “red flags” actually.
glintik··on A Docker footgun led to a vandal deleting NewsBlur's MongoDB database (2021)
Lol, that’s the same footgun I discovered myself when was checking open ports. Who that wise guy in Docket team who decided to pass default firewall rules and open containers ports to public?
glintik··on Shrinkflation, SanDisk Style
Kingston, Transcend - they have premium lines, pretty good IMHO.
glintik··on Shrinkflation, SanDisk Style
SanDisk isn’t premium at all. And known for various issues.
glintik··on Stripe increases price for business in the European Economic Area
«Dispute fees (also known as chargebacks) will increase from €15 to €20. We’ll also no longer refund this fee if the customer’s bank resolves the dispute in your favor, due to the costs Stripe incurs for managing dispute evidence submissions (regardless of the outcome).»

That’s very interesting. Stripe is so greedy and dishonest.

glintik··on We invested 10% to pay back tech debt
Why not 15%? Or may be 5% will be enough. Actually, it’s a bad idea to plan time in such manner. If devs need, they should be able to refactor/fix things during normal development process without any “just 10%”.
glintik··on Ask HN: Why has eInk technology stalled compared to other display tech?
My regrets abouts current eEnk readers: 1) Too heavy(for 10”) - 400 grams and more. Too wide borders. Still 2 cm on Kindle Oasis! 2) Low level of UX, compared with modern tablets - slow screen refresh, touch events comfort far away from tablets. 3) Too much of unneeded features. Who needs audio player or web browser on reader? Invest your time in technology inprovements!

Looks like even Amazon lost interest for ereaders R&D. City needs new hero.

glintik··on Ask HN: Does anyone review code on their iPad/tablet?
Why do you need this pain?
glintik··on Ask HN: Why did Frontend development explode in complexity?
The main reason is easy “to plug and play” various tools, i.e react, websockets, graphql, webpack etc. That’s not related to frontend only, but kubernetes devops are also crying from complexity.
glintik··on Ask HN: What are your predictions for 2023?
Hard to find valuable post or comments actually. One of the worst I saw before. That’s why I use google to find something, way better.
glintik··on Ask HN: What are your predictions for 2023?
HN will finally get redesigned and good search engine with friendly UI.
glintik··on Ask HN: Are Any of You Tired from macOS and Want to Go Back to Linux?
You are really lucky man. Google says there are “About 529,000 results” for “linux acpi bugs”.
glintik··on Ask HN: Are Any of You Tired from macOS and Want to Go Back to Linux?
Never had bugs with desktop linux? Even with ACPI? How long do you run Linux?
glintik··on Ask HN: Are Any of You Tired from macOS and Want to Go Back to Linux?
You’ve got much free time to fight against numerous Linux bugs, especially after OS upgrade?
glintik··on Apple to move 40-45% iPhone production to India
I’d like to see again “Made in USA” phone and ready to pay 10% more.
glintik··on WhatsApp data leak: 500M user records for sale
That’s not leak actually, phone information about active/inactive is open. Anybody can run a spider to collect this.
glintik··on Books recommended by profitable founders
Wondered if reading such books increases any chances of beeing profitable.
glintik··on Meta lays off 11,000 people
That’s ok, they hired too much people too fast. Ad revenues go down, they need to save money.
glintik··on Mark Zuckerberg confirms broad layoffs to begin at Meta
"we expect" is not equal to "we ensure"
glintik··on Cloud development environments tame complexity by reducing state
“You have to delete this file & re-run that script. No problem.” That's a problem actually, And doesn't matter where you run your program - locally or on remote host. Looks like there are issues with programming approach and stability.
glintik··on Tech CEO fired two engineers for having second full-time jobs
CEO should avoid to hire that people. That’s smart.
glintik··on WhatsApp Remote Code Execution in Video Call
I live there, buddy. Telegram was blocked many times. But after some time any attempts were stopped. Just think about why.
glintik··on WhatsApp Remote Code Execution in Video Call
«The Russian government hates him too.» Telegram is one of few popular messengers that are NOT blocked/prohibited in Russia. So government and Durov have some agreement.
glintik··on Mcmaster.com is the best e-commerce site I've ever used
Best e-commerce site? Ok, trying to search for “bolts filips”. Showes me ALL products.
