glaberficken··on In the animal kingdom, the astonishing power of the number instinct
I find it we are anthropomorphizing when we say: Non human animal x or y can "count their own eggs" or "assess numbers"

Animals can surely assess and "feel" quantities via the senses and via their own automatic body reactions (hormones etc...). As well as have many pre-programmed quantities in their genome.

But a "number" is purely an abstract concept. I don't think we can ever be sure an animal is actually "counting" things. Instead from what we know about how fear, excitement, etc is regulated via hormones it seems fairly probable that they are simply seeing, hearing, touching and this triggers a feeling that guides them to a certain behavior (through hormone secretion).

glaberficken··on What motivates the authors of video game walkthroughs and FAQs?
In the mid 2000s I had a job building html marketing emails (legal "spam" basically). The main targets were enterprise tech managers. I quickly found out that we could double the click rate on the emails by including a plain text version (Lotus Notes email client was still a thing and many tech people had it set to read only the plain text mime part of emails).

Clients were scepticall at first because they wanted to make sure that the user was seeing all the visual branding in the html+images. To convince them, I started using gamefaq style ASCII typography tricks to make a visual representation of the layout. It worked great.

glaberficken··on The Powder Toy
The go to LAN game when I went to uni was GTA I! I was taking a non tech course but I still remember vividly this was my first interaction with typing in an IP address. (you had to enter the IP address of the game host on the lan to connect to it)
glaberficken··on Assange Hearing Day 7
Chomsky has been exposing this type of practice since the 70s. (and doing so based on sound logical arguments and documented evidence) Everyone should read his stuff, still as relevant today as it was 50 years ago.
glaberficken··on Controllable Video Sprites That Appear Like Professional Tennis Players
Found this: https://commons.nmu.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1746&con...

Very interesting read, but I'm not knowledgeable enough to really give you an accurate tldr, sorry

glaberficken··on Noita – roguelite where every pixel is simulated
Noita was yet another tech-demo/game-engine looking for a gameplay idea. The outcome is usually a good-enough but unremarkable game.
glaberficken··on Supercomputer analysis of Covid-19 leads to new theory
Exactly what I thought. A theory has to make a falsifiable prediction. A correlation is not a falsifiable prediction.
glaberficken··on Nessie – Lightweight Web Browser
Also without the slowness!

[Alt]+ [<-] or [->] works for going Back / Fwd

Interestingly Alt + N for new window and then Ctrl+Tab cycles the windows.

I like this old school workflow for some browsing tasks rather than tabs (but not all the time obviously)

glaberficken··on How Predictable Is Fiction?
This sparked a thought:

Do you know about https://tvtropes.org ?

Wouldn't it be cool to train a model to identify the underlying tropes of any fiction writing?

Wait, is that what Netflix does with the micro-specific genres they tag?

glaberficken··on How to Learn Everything: The MasterClass Diaries
Learning anything for me always follows this sort of structure (I'm sure someone will tell me there's some well known name for this because it seems so "self obvious").

Step0: Select the simplest achievable task in the domain of the new thing you are trying to learn.

Step1: Gather all the stuff you think you will be needing to accomplish the task (tools, materials, software, instructions, time!, etc).

Step2: Hit a road-block. It can be the lack of an indispensable tool or a lack of knowledge of a particular detail.

Step3: Fix the blocker (fill the knowledge gap about the new detail, buy/borrow the missing tool). If multiple roadblocks: Solve the one that seems most fundamental first; If stuck at blocker: seek help from others, sleep on it, give up (some things are too hard with your present knowledge).

Step4: If task still not completed GOTO Step3; If task completed: Select a new more advanced task and GOTO Step2.

> Puzzles start feeling like they're asking more for busywork than for puzzle-solving. I enjoy thinking about "how do I do this?" I don't enjoy thinking "well, I know exactly what I want to do, but it's a huge slog to actually go through the motions."

I think you will enjoy this puzzle game:

http://qrostar.skr.jp/en/jelly/

Don't let the cutesy graphics fool you, this is a masterpiece in puzzle design.

In case you are not on Windows or don't want to download the exe for some reason right now, you can try this html simplified version

glaberficken··on Joan Feynman has died
Same here. I guess in a way by not mentioning her a lot in public he was protecting her from only becoming known as "Richard Feynman's sister". That way you leave the room for the other person to emerge on her own terms.
glaberficken··on The Math of Card Shuffling (2018)
How can someone with that level of precision tolerate the wrinkled table cloth!
glaberficken··on Order of magnitude estimate of Beirut explosion at 3 kilotons of TNT
That's the first video I saw on the breaking news, gut reaction was "that really looks like Hollywood cgi to me".
glaberficken··on Endless Doom Scroller
Nassim Taleb, also makes many allusions to this in several of his books.

Particularly jarring is the constant fixation that is going on in the news with Daily COVID-19 data. There is simply too much daily variation that has nothing to do with how the virus is spreading and affecting each location. A huge waste of attention and resources with titles such as "Largest number of new cases in a day since March!"... so what?

glaberficken··on 1991 Macintosh Quadra with Mac OS 8.1 as an Electron App
In the mid 2000s I spent years converting bitmap mockups into html table designs using Fireworks (using the slice->export workflow). My managers were perpetually in awe of how much faster I churned out the work when compared with the Photoshop wizards we had in the house.

Really miss Fireworks.

HN is US centric

US is "self-centric", "insular"

As in: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Series

This is a generalization, of course...

glaberficken··on Netflix teases desktops-as-a-service offering aimed at VFX creators
Given that Netflix has a vested interest in trying to pump out a high volume of content. Can this be a play to help comoditize the post-production costs associated?
glaberficken··on The Game of Life – Emergence in Generative Art
Wow, that creates all sorts of optical illusions for me. After the cube faces are filled I see massive waves sweeping across the faces and sometimes the cube vertices seem to expand and contract distorting the cube and turning it inside out.

glaberficken··on Special filters in glasses can help the color blind see colors better
I just took the test on enchroma's website[1] (take it with a grain of salt for obvious reasons) but it seems to describe accurately what I have suspected my whole life.

The result for me was: DEUTAN with MODERATE severity

The description they provide for this type of color blindness fits exactly with my life experience.

>"WHAT IS DEUTAN COLOR BLINDNESS?

Deutan color blindness (also known as deuteranomaly) is a type of red-green color blindness in which the green cones in the eye detect too much red light and not enough green light.

As a result, red, yellow, green, and brown can appear similar, especially in low light. It may also be difficult to tell the difference between blues and purples, or pinks and grays."

glaberficken··on Special filters in glasses can help the color blind see colors better
I get where you are coming from. I also have some sort of colorblindness apparently (just found out!). I agree with you that there is no single correct way to "see" colors, and as such that does not require fixing. i.e. If the glasses are only going to change color A to be more or less vivid then what really is the "philosophical" value?

However, if the glasses allow you to start differentiating colors that you previously perceived as a single uniform color, then I think there is a much stronger reason to wear them.

glaberficken··on Special filters in glasses can help the color blind see colors better
I still vividly remember the day I walked out of the opticians at 9yo with my first pair of corrective glasses (myopia). It really freaked me out because I literally saw the sidewalk ride up the side of adjacent building walls as I walked along the street. I wanted to immediately take them off. But after a few hours that feeling just went away.

glaberficken··on Show HN: Is It Worth the Cost?
Under "Service cost" it could use an option for "one time purchase fee". Obviously that is going to create special cases for the "amortizations" output
glaberficken··on Show HN: Is It Worth the Cost?
I was going to say. The biggest cost for most organizations is the recruitment and training costs of an employee that leaves due to demotivation stemming from having to do "robotic" tasks.

More like - coasting uphill!

glaberficken··on Tell HN: Google drops blogspot.in, breaking hundreds of thousands of permalinks
Regarding longevity. Here is a nice setup that should last well until after you are dead:

Write your articles as plain .txt when you don't need images. Or as handwritten html when you do (use relative links and dump the images into a subfolder) You can simply have pre-made templates for this that you copy and paste manually.

Create an account at archive.org Upload your writings root folder. As suggested here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=23650600

your writings can live on in a url like https://archive.org/download/test_blog_2020/test/blog/

You can even add custom metadata so that it is searchable in some future incarnation of archive.org (doubt they will ever break the existing metadata even if at some decades down the line someone decides to redesign the whole thing)

archive.org is becoming such an important "ark" of knowledge that in theory there will be a very high chance a copy is preserved somewhere for decades to come. (barring some large scale digital societal collapse)

glaberficken··on Derailing illusions that kill: misperceptions at railway crossings (2003)
Its because of this that road authorities usually place "mandatory head lights on" road signs on long straight single lane pieces of road. (because if there is high traffic there will be people taking advantage of the long straight to overtake slower cars, and during the day there is the possibility that a driver will not interpret a head on collision correctly)
glaberficken··on Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper in a new gigapixel image
I used Hugin to stitch a bunch of building site blueprints just last week. It was painful... just very unintuitive and hard to grasp. Very powerful software though. Just keep in mind it was built to stitch panorama photos, compensate for lens deformation, point of view, etc.

Stitching flatbed scans is not the best use case for Hugin and it shows.

I used the same tutorial linked by Op http://hugin.sourceforge.net/tutorials/scans/en.shtml

Note that Hugin requires overlap between scans. I would test MS ICE first if I were you (less powerful, but way simpler) https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/research/product/computation...
