I'm not Greg Kroah-Hartman in case you're wondering.

gkhartman··on CHOMPI portable sampler instrument is now open-source (hardware and software)
Glad to see stuff like this. I'm willing to pay quite a bit more for products supporting oss/osh.
gkhartman··on Creatine uptake enhances antitumor immunity
Fair. Missed that bit tbh.
gkhartman··on Creatine uptake enhances antitumor immunity
...in mice.
gkhartman··on Device Drivers lab exercise – COSC562
I found it interesting, and a nice break from yet another llm related post. Why would it be out of place here?
gkhartman··on Why do programmers need private offices with doors?
I'm not a fan of taking zoom calls while my mic picks up the voice of the person that sits across the room. I'd call being able to communicate via voice call without noise issues a need. While it can be done, constantly hearing other ppl in the background during a call just feels unprofessional/sloppy.
gkhartman··on Flutter 3.47
Is that true though? I'm reading HN on an app built using Flutter. I had no idea until recently, so I would assume more apps could use it without my knowledge.

I understand it's limitations vs native apps, but there's quite a few cases where it really doesn't matter.

The biggest one for me is always the fear it will be abandoned. Pretty much goes for any cross platform app framework though.

gkhartman··on ESP32-C6 Power Consumption: Arduino vs. Zephyr vs. ESP-IDF Comparison
If you didn't mind sharing, I'd like to hear more about your use case. I'm assuming these would be things like temp/humidity sensors and such. I suppose you'd want to avoid wake-ups and radio use as much as possible.

I've not gotten around to trying, but I assume using deep sleep while waking up to batch send data with infrequent updates would be key.

gkhartman··on RTX 2080 Ti Memory Upgrade to 22 GB
Yeah, it's gonna be more than that. You'll also need a hot plate, flux, solder wick. I'd double that price to 120, not to mention it takes quite a bit of practice to learn bga soldering.
gkhartman··on Uv 0.12.0
Yeah, I don't think I'd have made the jump otherwise, since convincing others on the team would have been much harder.
gkhartman··on Rustnet: Per-process network monitoring with deep packet inspectio
Looks neat. Might give it a go tomorrow.
gkhartman··on FreeCAD in the Browser
Probably nice to have for those with low income that only have a Chromebook.
gkhartman··on Podman v6.0.0
This except in production. Nothing helped. I actually stopped using containers for a bit after that.
gkhartman··on Advanced Nintendo Entertainment System (ANES) – NES Modded to Use 2 PPUs
Reminds me of a NES that I overclocked when I was around 14 years old. It was the sort of silly thing a nerdy kid would do with too much free time on their hands, and didn't do much to improve the system. Most of the time it caused more issues than it fixed, but it was a good learning experience.

This is far more exciting, since it adds functionality to they system. Maybe I'll dust off my old hacked up NES and do this at some point. If only I had the free time these days.

Thx for sharing :)

gkhartman··on Systemd 261 released with systemd-sysinstall, IMDSD, and storagectl
I thought this law was just a joke, but after Manny years of development, I'm finding out it's very real.

It's also increasingly painful to make happen in today's email ecosystem.

gkhartman··on DIY open-source ultrasound hardware on the rp2040/rp2350
What are the practical applications of this? The things that come to mind when I hear "ultrasound" are medical devices and wall scanners.

That said, it's a cool project, even if it doesn't have a practical use.

gkhartman··on Is my blue your blue?
How much does display calibration factor into this? I'm fairly confident it must impact the results, but unsure how much error it would introduce.
gkhartman··on An 'Intimacy Crisis' Is Driving the Dating Divide
"Sucking at something is the first step to being sorta good at something" ~Jake the Dog (Adventure Time)

I feel this doesn't get taught enough in school and it's a really important life lesson.

gkhartman··on WiiFin – Jellyfin Client for Nintendo Wii
Honestly surprised it took this long. I guess it's less than ideal, since the wii doesn't support modern tv resolutions.
gkhartman··on Hello, World
If we could send every politician as a prerequisite for the job, I think it would greatly benefit mankind. It would be far more difficult to make corrupt decisions after seeing our only inhabitable rock against that vast emptiness, or at least one would hope so.

I'm always blown away by these photos. I'm sure this is even more spectacular in person. Good idea on the desktop background ;)

gkhartman··on CodingFont: A game to help you pick a coding font
Neat educational game. Would have liked to see Maple Mono in the line up, but I'm sure you've gotta draw the line somewhere or the game would be too tedious.
gkhartman··on CodingFont: A game to help you pick a coding font
Same. Came down to Fira Code and PT Mono. I already use Fira Code, so I probably biased to what I'm used to. I do think that Fira Code is hard to beat when it comes to ambiguous characters.
gkhartman··on Mozilla is working on a big Firefox redesign, here is what it looks like
I really thought we'd be using a Firefox powered by Servo by now, but instead we're getting a second UI rewrite. At least it's not becoming a chromium wrapper.
gkhartman··on A header-only C vector database library
Agreed, once you've spent hrs fighting with C build tools under a deadline, it becomes very easy to see why this is beneficial.
gkhartman··on Warcraft III Peon Voice Notifications for Claude Code
It's can a long time since I've heard those sound clips. Brings back a lot of great memories of playing WCIII as a teen. Didn't have the money at the time to play WoW, so I ended up playing Guild wars instead.

I never tried playing the WCIII reboot after hearing some pretty bad reviews.

gkhartman··on I put a real-time 3D shader on the Game Boy Color
You can pick a used one up for pretty cheap. Add a flash cartridge and you're done. I think the cheap android handhelds of the same form factor are a better option though.

I've still got my Gameboy collection, but rarely use it. It's just so much easier to fire up an emulator these days.

gkhartman··on The largest zip tie is nearly 4 feet long and $75
It's a shame they didn't add a photo with another object for reference. Without looking at the price and dimensions, it looks pretty unassuming.
gkhartman··on Linux DAW: Help Linux musicians to quickly and easily find the tools they need
This is great. Makes these tools much more discoverable. I can help but notice the drop in plugin ui quality one you click the foss filter checkbox. Something in me wants a foss plugin to come with a cool skin like the free ones do, but I know that's silly.
gkhartman··on Show HN: I wrote a small lib to turn a USB gamepad into a Bluetooth one
I had a quick thought to do something like this a while back, but never got around to the experimental phase. I ended up buying a new controller instead (whilst grumbling about making an adapter). Thanks for making it happen, and being kind enough to open source it. Looking forward to giving it a try later.
gkhartman··on Mozilla's New CEO Confirms Firefox Will Become an "AI Browser"
Welp, I guess Firefox forks are gonna get a lot more users in the near future. Hopefully turning off the ai features will be an available option as mentioned, but hopefully they'll be off by default.
gkhartman··on VA Linux: The biggest dotcom IPO
If you don't mind me asking, what did you end up buying, and what was lacking support? I'd expect full support from one of the "Linux first" suppliers like System76.
