gkanai··on Doing a Machine Learning PhD While Working in Japan
Thank you for sharing.

"In essentially every other category, my quality of life has degraded significantly since returning home. "

This is the challenge. The market in the US, the salaries, etc. are significantly better/higher, but the quality of life is often worse.

gkanai··on Automattic's board forces CEO Matt Mullenweg into leave of absence
It is not. They did take VC funding however, which is when the board and the investor agreements came into force.

> Can't believe they flew all these people in to play them a video.

Apple can't afford to have demo problems or presentation glitches anymore. Hence the system that they have now.

gkanai··on Suica, Japan's First IC Transit Card
>how paper-money-driven Japan is.

JFYI, over 50% of payments in Japan in 2026 are digital now. So not as high as other markets but certainly much less paper money than pre-pandemic.

gkanai··on Where did all the public bathrooms go?
Almost every convenience store in Japan has a public toilet. Yes, it is polite to purchase something but it's not required. Some even have bidet function.
gkanai··on Memory prices climb 500% in 12 months
These unintended (or intended?) affects of the AI boom are yet another cause for hate among a key demographic (people who use/buy/build PCs) who might otherwise be pro-AI but because of this are quite anti-AI.
gkanai··on Los Puesteros, solitary men who look after ranches and livestock in Patagonia
Solitude by choice is one thing. Leaving when you want to, returning to a life with more connections, etc.

These men are probably doing this job because it is work they can get.

I think it looks romantic from the perspective of someone in a major metro area. But long term, that sort of lifestyle is only for the people who can really endure that. After a while I think most would not want that remoteness.
gkanai··on Hackers Stalked Me by Hijacking a Smartwatch for Kids
Until the Chinese government penalizes these Chinese companies for these insecure practices, they'll continue to be sold as is. China doesn't need to care about Chinese made products sold for export apparently.
gkanai··on VTubing: How a Japanese Phenomenon Is Going Worldwide
The two largest vtuber agencies/companies are publicly traded in Japan.

https://finance.yahoo.co.jp/quote/5032.T?term=2y

The stock prices are not great all things considered- I think that the vtuber audience needs something new/different to broaden beyond it's current market base AND I think investors would rather put money into AI related stocks than IP/vtuber related stocks.

gkanai··on John Deere owners will get the right to repair equipment under FTC settlement
Apple too. They solder in the SSDs and memory.
gkanai··on Bring back crappy forums
The best forums still have users and traffic. For instance, for Toyota Land Cruiser owners, the best information has always been at ih8mud. Reddit doesnt hold a candle to Mud for the depth of information available (for that community.)

gkanai··on I'm Eric Ries, author of "The Lean Startup" and new book "Incorruptible" – AMA
Did you look at Patagonia Inc. as an example? I wasn't aware of the new book but am more interested in it now.

> the system is designed so that VCs keep winning

The way around that is to not take VC money. There are some (not many) startups that got to unicorn status by bootstrapping and not taking outside money. It's harder, yes, but in a way a more pure effort.

gkanai··on Elon Musk has lost his lawsuit against Sam Altman and OpenAI
The Mozilla Foundation owns the Mozilla Corporation. The Corporation hires the engineering staff that does the bulk of the work to develop Firefox (the rest are community/volunteer contributors and partners.)
gkanai··on I want to live like Costco people
Agreed. Recommended.
gkanai··on Backblaze has stopped backing up your data
Many here at HN find that site hard to read, not just the original commenter.
gkanai··on In Japan, the robot isn't coming for your job; it's filling the one nobody wants
> "Flying Geese" paradigm

Can you name any one of these that are successful or prominent? I am not aware of this paradigm.

gkanai··on MacBook Pro with M5 Pro and M5 Max
Apple, if you are reading this, I'm not investing into new hardware until you fix the mess that is Tahoe. My M1 MAX is doing fine atm.
gkanai··on Rivian R2: Electric Mid-Size SUV
The R1 is a body on frame, so a traditional truck chassis.

This new R2 is a unibody- so more of a car, less so a truck

gkanai··on The struggle of resizing windows on macOS Tahoe
I am still on Sequoia and dont plan to move to Tahoe.
gkanai··on VW is bringing physical buttons back to the dashboard with the ID. Polo EV
The famous case I always bring up is the accident with the USS John McCain. The US Navy tried screens but due to this accident and other reasons has gone back to mechanical controls. Cars can have some screens but key controls (HVAC, car safety, windows, etc.) should be mechanical.

gkanai··on It's hard to justify Tahoe icons
Good Riddance to Alan Dye.

Tim Cook- if you do one thing before you retire- promote the right person to fix both MacOS and iOS. They're both in need of a lot of work to fix.

gkanai··on BMW PHEV: Safety fuse replacement is extremely expensive
I would argue peak car was a little earlier, maybe the 2000-2010 decade. Fewer screens to fail, analog buttons and dials. Airbags, and ABS for safety but without the additional computers/screens.
gkanai··on Last Week on My Mac: Losing confidence
I've been on Apple since the 1980s. Apple IIc was my first Apple.

Since a few years ago, I've chosen to stay at least 1 full version behind the current version and I've never regretted that.

gkanai··on iPhone Pocket
Miyake has a line called A-POC which makes clothing out of a single piece of cloth. So it's a product line at IM.
