gjadi··on My article on why AI is great (or terrible) or how to use it
As if reading books was enough to make you an author.
gjadi··on Japanese game devs face font dilemma as license increases from $380 to $20k
Maybe not for the full japanese characters set, but for an existing game, they could do it for the subset of characters they are using.
gjadi··on Coq: The World's Best Macro Assembler? (2013) [pdf]
What's a MMM heap? Is it a typo on min-max heap?
gjadi··on How the brain's activity, energy use and blood flow change as people fall asleep
There are several things I use:

- think of past enjoyable moments (for me it's hiking, I usually don't go very far until I fall to sleep)

- box breathing

- hold breath for N sec then release, then N+10, then ...

- try to relax your body from top to bottom (forehead, eyes, cheeks, mouth, ...)

- imagine your body is very light, like your floating in the air

- imagine your body is very heavy, like a block of concrete sinking into your bed

- pick TAOCP and try to solve the exercises ;)

gjadi··on A small number of samples can poison LLMs of any size
Given that every LLM-players are still looking for their market, I wouldn't be surprise if they did things that don't scale.
gjadi··on A comparison of Ada and Rust, using solutions to the Advent of Code
How is the internal representation an issue? Java string are utf16 internally and it's doesn't matter how you write your code nor what's the targeted format.
gjadi··on What kids told us about how to get them off their phones
But since it's mostly by people close to the children, the fear of the stranger is not justified.
gjadi··on Things that helped me get out of the AI 10x engineer imposter syndrome
Have a look at https://zfhuang99.github.io/tla+/pluscal/chatgpt/2023/09/24/...
gjadi··on Nobody knows how to build with AI yet
Or, you know, chmod -w XYZ.ts
gjadi··on A software conference that advocates for quality
> Physical attendance will be invite-only. Tickets will not be publicly available. Invitees will receive an attendee guide with further information.
gjadi··on A software conference that advocates for quality
> plan to throw one away; you will, anyhow.
gjadi··on Major reversal in ocean circulation detected in the Southern Ocean
Two things: slowdown and adaptation. Slow CO2 emissions because every tons make it worse for +10 000yrs. Adaptation, because infrastructures changes are slow to do and the sooner we start the sooner we can absorb damage.
gjadi··on As a developer, my most important tools are a pen and a notebook
Interesting. I noticed the same and sometimes I change my emacs theme just to get a fresh perspective. Sometimes I also disable syntax highlighting when typing so I won't get distracted.
gjadi··on John Carmack talk at Upper Bound 2025
Hardware changes a lot in the time it takes to develop a game. When I read his plan files and interviews, I realized he seemed to spend a lot of time before developing the game thinking about what the next gen hardware was going to bring. Then design the best game they could think of whike targeting this not-yet-available hardware.
gjadi··on Why GADTs matter for performance (2015)
That was an interesting read, thanks. However I fail to see how it's an issue specific to ocaml. It was a bug in the Skylake processor triggered by a special pattern of instructions produced by gcc. Ocaml built with clang was ok because it doesn't used the same pattern. Did I miss something?
gjadi··on A layoff fundamentally changed how I perceive work
Like you, I like doing work I enjoy, but I have never been in a layoff, so I don't know how I will react to it.

My hope is that after a layoff I would be able to bounce back and find a new company where I can keep on doing fun work.

Life has ups and downs. I don't think shielding yourself from emotions is a healthy path. Just like you don't have to shield yourself from others forever after a breakup. A key ingredient is to have other part of your life to support you (family, couple, friends, ...) when one is failing.

gjadi··on I wrote my own “proper” programming language (2020)
His progression is wild. Going from top Cambridge graduate in 2021 to Staff Eng at META in 3y. Nice!
gjadi··on Be Aware of the Makefile Effect
You can have locally ignores files in .git/info/exclude IIRC.
gjadi··on Cognitive load is what matters
This. The solution to long and multiple reviews to MR is single pair review session where most of the big picture aspects can be addressed immediately and verbally discussed and challenged.

IMHO it is the same as chat. If talking about an issue over mail or chat takes more than 3-5 messages, trigger a call to solve it face to face.

gjadi··on Ask HN: SWEs how do you future-proof your career in light of LLMs?
ffmepg is famous for using asm. For exemple : https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=42041301
gjadi··on Ask HN: Best dev environment for C in 2024?
Embedded developer and longtime emacs user here.

For code navigation: If the tool chains provides the file compile_commads.json, then I use the built-in LSP: eglot. If not, then universal-ctags to generate TAGS file.

For debugging, I use ozone when JTAG is available, if not, back to miserable printf debugging or worse.

gjadi··on CNN and USA Today have fake websites, I believe Forbes Marketplace runs them
Also posted a week ago: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=41590466 In case you're interested in what was discussed before on this topic.
gjadi··on iOS 18 breaks IMAPS self-signed certs
IMAP is for reading your emails not sending, that means you could accept PKI for SMTP to communicate with untrustworthy clients, but want to ensure that your access to your emails are safe(r).
gjadi··on Rga: Ripgrep, but also search in PDFs, E-Books, Office documents, zip, etc.
For emacs users in the room, there is consult-recoll.
gjadi··on The Art of Finishing
Congrats to the author for finishing their article!
gjadi··on Ask HN: Is it possible to make FAANG salaries without working there?
This sounds like a typical embedded software engineer and I frequently see people around here complaining about the low salaries for these roles. What am I missing?
gjadi··on Tour de France: How professional cycling teams eat and cook on the road
This sounds similar to windsurfing, tinkering with your board, sail size, fin size, etc. is a big part of the sport.

Yet, at the Olympics, the gear is the same for everyone.

Btw, I can't remember where, but I heard that, in the old editions of the Tour de France not all gears were allowed, shifters for example weren't allowed even though they were available to amateurs.

gjadi··on Spending too much time optimizing for loops
Because you get all the nice tooling around the JVM + safety of running inside the JVM.

See https://medium.com/@jadsarmo/why-we-chose-java-for-our-high-... / https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=24895395

> An improvement can be discussed in the morning, and be implemented, tested and released in production in the afternoon.

gjadi··on Daedalus: Safer Document Parsing – ACM on Programming Languages
The source code of the project is available here: https://github.com/GaloisInc/daedalus (haskell)
gjadi··on 'The big problem is water': UK ebike owners plagued by failing motors
My local bike shop said they are all in Bosch because they had better reliability and less issues with their support compared to other companies and because of the commitment to long term spare parts availability.
