gizmodo59··on How the Valley treats experienced people
Ageism is a real factor in tech companies but as the demand grows and tech companies have been around for decades this might go down a bit. May be not for startups but FAANGs definitely will have more aged developers. It’s also important to realize the other factors play in this. Where you are born, your race matters a lot more than many people think. Two people of same age and equal talent but different race aren’t treated the same way in almost any country in the world (Not trying to generalize but it is prevalent)
gizmodo59··on Congress votes to make open government data the default in the United States
+1 for this. This site is beautifully designed and loads very fast in mobile.
gizmodo59··on As Facebook Raised a Privacy Wall, It Carved an Opening for Tech Giants
The question to ask is rather, how much money is OK to remain silent. Unfortunately for the majority it’s not in the millions. Almost any big corporation does some activity that are not strictly in the ethical norms. To me, strict laws must be passed and people must be held accountable to really see a change.
gizmodo59··on Satoshi Nakamoto made a post after years of silence?
Then he/she/they cannot prove. It is what it is.
gizmodo59··on You might not need Kubernetes
I think of these in this way: 99% of the apps are developed by the developers who are not in the top 1%. The cheap access to computing power has led to a growth of developers beyond the highly skilled ones who can milk out everything available in a less powerful computer. I'd like to believe we are at an Electron development phase where we just want to ship as much as possible easily without worrying about hiring great talent (And yeah I hate that its inefficient in terms of memory usage). This has led to the explosion of so many frameworks that does a lot of things easily which requires such complex devops pipeline.
gizmodo59··on Google AMP – A 70% drop in our conversion rate
I’m at the other end of the spectrum. I don’t have a good internet connection and it’s painful to wait for a page to load. If I see the AMP icon I will visit that site than the non AMP site. Oh and I’m in US. If I travel abroad, it’s much worse. As a consumer, AMP has been phenomenal.

AMP + Safari reader mode = Best browsing experience.

gizmodo59··on Vectorized processing for Apache Arrow
There is another component called Apache Arrow Flight, a new way for applications to interact with Arrow. Now that there is an established way for representing data between systems, Flight is an RPC protocol for exchanging that data between systems much more efficiently. You can think of this as a much faster alternative to ODBC/JDBC for in-memory analytics.
gizmodo59··on Apple becomes the first $1T company
I think the stock quotes represent the same entity. So it wont be ~850B + ~850B.
gizmodo59··on Why getting back to the moon is so damn hard
Is there any reason why I cannot view this in In-Cognito/In-Private mode?
gizmodo59··on The everything-is-a-file principle – Linus Torvalds
I don’t think that should stop you. The worry comes much later when your contribution is significant. Furthermore, his rants are not absurd IMHO.
gizmodo59··on Google Cloud Platform – The Good, Bad, and Ugly
Okay Google, I would like to report an outage in GKE.

Thanks for contacting Google AI support. We can't escalate this to a human because we don't have enough skilled support team but our AI can solve any problem and we use you as a training set. /s

(I know its harsh but I'm sure people here can relate to it)

gizmodo59··on Ask HN: Have you shipped anything serious with a “serverless” architecture?
Most of the stuff in GCP won't be closed like the list as they are used by enterprise customers (Or at least, there will be proper notice, migration path etc). I agree that at the end of the day you have little control over the infrastructure, its impossible for a lot of companies to maintain them which is why they are going to cloud. If you are very worried, you can just use the VMs (EC2 or GCP's VMs etc) and not use other services.
gizmodo59··on Ask HN: Have you shipped anything serious with a “serverless” architecture?
You just have to verify your email address in SES (https://docs.aws.amazon.com/ses/latest/DeveloperGuide/verify...) and then you can use SES to send emails on your behalf. You might also want to send a support ticket to get you out of their sandbox environment as it has a lot of restrictions. And then its very simple with Boto3 for example: https://pastebin.com/raw/hC6ihZZx

gizmodo59··on Ask HN: What has your experience with lesser-known TLDs been?
I realized that Google doesn't support .xyz when I tried to register it. Ironically, abc.xyz is Alphabet's home page.
gizmodo59··on How the Manhattan Project’s Nuclear Suburb Stayed Secret
I highly recommend this talk by Richard Feynman on Los Alamos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uY-u1qyRM5w. His personal anecdote on some interesting details while he was working there.
gizmodo59··on Facebook Q1 2018 Earnings Slides [pdf]
This is true not just for Facebook. Consumer spending per person in US is very high compared to many other countries in the world.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_largest_consumer_marke...

The businesses that wants to run ads also spend a lot. Its also true for Enterprise Software to some extent. I work for an enterprise software company and despite having had a decade of presence and having been founded in Europe, 70% of our revenue is from USA.

While I don't have numbers to back it up, personally from my experience, I see Americans spending a lot (sometimes more credit than savings itself) compared to other developed nations.

The cost of RAM is already very very high. This has been surging for quite sometime and now we might see the same for SSDs too. Not to call this news as false, but its sad to see the price increasing :(

gizmodo59··on California's other drought: a major earthquake is overdue

gizmodo59··on The metrics behind Spotify’s IPO
Can anyone give some insights on how it compares to Apple Music or Google Play Music.

With 9.99 you also get YouTube Red and the selection for play music seems to be huge when compared with Amazon Prime Music (At least enough for me). If I don't have a song in play, I can use YouTube app and it plays in background. This is important for regional songs as Spotify does not have a huge library for non English songs but YouTube has almost everything. I agree that the quality is not that great with YouTube, but that's something is not of a big deal for me. Does anyone feel like this?

What's your metrics to decide between Play, Apple and Spotify?

gizmodo59··on Bitcoin Cash deals frozen as insider trading is probed
Some people do know that its going to be listed. https://www.reddit.com/r/CoinBase/comments/7kfbjj/will_coinb.... The user mukiwa2 said "Bitcoin Cash coming in the next few days!!" 2 days back in that thread and he even joked saying he knew an employee in Coinbase.

That response has since been deleted. I was just talking to my friend about this. Here is the snapshot: https://imgur.com/a/cLlp7

gizmodo59··on Show HN: Effects of House and Senate Bill on California Residents
Have you scaled the size of the server or added more servers? Would be interesting to know some stats as I'm thinking between DO vs Vultr
gizmodo59··on Learning with Privacy at Scale
Of the big tech companies (GOOG, FB, MSFT, APPL) I really respect Apple for the things they do to protect privacy. From standing their ground against three letter agencies to ensuring user privacy even while collecting information. Albeit they don't earn the major portion of their revenue from ads unlike GOOG and FB its still commendable.
gizmodo59··on Silicon Valley Software Engineer Salaries by Experience Level
The data in payscale.com seems to vary a lot with these numbers. I assume they have much more data than Triplebyte. For example, the 50th percentile of a SE with 3 years exp will have a salary of 100K in a city like NYC. The cost of living in NYC is as high as in SV. May be there are more engineers who are paid a lot less? I hope the corporate tax break gives a good hike but that's just a dream.
