gizmodo59··on InfluxDB is betting on Rust and Apache Arrow for next-gen data store
Looking at Dremio’s website they seem to be a good competitor to presto/Athena for some use cases.

Alternative solutions depends on your use case. If it’s about querying S3 data then Dremio/Athena/Presto/spark are good.

gizmodo59··on InfluxDB is betting on Rust and Apache Arrow for next-gen data store
Another SQL engine on data lake that heavily uses arrow is Dremio.

https://github.com/dremio/dremio-oss

If you have parquet on S3, using an engine like Dremio (or any engine based on arrow) can give you some impressive performance. Key innovations in OSS on data analytics/data lake:

Arrow - Columnar in memory format; Gandiva - LLVM based execution kernel; Arrow flight - Wire protocol based on arrow; Project Nessie - A git like workflow for data lakes

Parquet + Arrow reminds me of a fast SQL engine on data lake called Dremio.

They also have an OSS version in GitHub.

gizmodo59··on Biden wins White House, vowing new direction for divided U.S.
Partly because of the voter turnout. By % wise its not a huge difference.
gizmodo59··on Restrict Access to your internal websites on AWS with BeyondCorp
A genuine question on this topic, does that mean we should have SSH ports open to the world too? If we have some form of 2FA? Or I’m misreading the point of beyond Corp.
gizmodo59··on iPhone 12 Pro Camera Review
The X is my favorite by far. It was a leap in terms of the user experience and design. I think all the versions that followed that doesn't change the user experience by that much. May be we will see one in the 20th anniversary edition!
gizmodo59··on Timekeeping in Financial Exchanges
The book flash boys is an interesting read on this topic. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flash_Boys
gizmodo59··on Apache Arrow and MinIO
Is there any specific optimizations done in minio code for arrow or it’s just that in general reading from arrow format gives high performance in analytics?
gizmodo59··on Chrome is not the new IE
Sorry but I like amp. I don’t want sites like the guardian to drain my phone battery and load in 10 seconds. I understand if it’s bad for publishers but as a consumer I love it.

To suggest that an end user would go about disabling JavaScript and other reasons just shows how HN is in a bubble and don’t really understand that 99% of the users don’t care.

gizmodo59··on Nascar: The Science of Racing Safely
Aside from safety, Cornering speed is where things get really interesting. Formula 1 cars are exceptionally engineered to provide those high speeds even in tight corners. Plus those sub 2 second pit stops, 1/100 of a second difference in qualifying, overtaking with near inches from another car etc
gizmodo59··on Product-led Growth
Selling to any real enterprise that costs north of 100K is almost impossible without a sales team (account executives, sales engineers). A lot of account executives have relationships from their previous work and they get a meeting through that. Look at any successful B2B startup like Okta, Mulesoft, Servicenow and their sec filings. Sales spending is always higher than R&D. It’s also assuming that your software is bug free and software engineers can spend time doing poc, demos etc or they like doing that. As much as we can all hate enterprise sales, just getting a contract from a large fortune company is a big deal.
gizmodo59··on Fortnite seems to have been removed from the Play Store as well
I don’t see Apple shutting down App Store even for spite. Not sure their operating expenses on App Store but if they reduce their cut, it won’t look bad on the books.

Sorry for the rant but this is just so poorly designed that I don't see any relevant content when I open the link without scrolling right away:

gizmodo59··on How the most popular Chrome extensions affect browser performance
In mac, there is sort by energy usage in activity monitor and Chrome always takes the top spot (at least for me).
gizmodo59··on Beyond Meat: Scaling ethical consumerism
I don’t think lions eating zebras is a good comparison.

We have evolved and flourished with agriculture and so we don’t have to consume meat unless the agricultural produce has gone way down.

I also think the general argument is how animals are treated with so many horrific videos out there which are just torture in my opinion and not a clean kill.

If someone is doing a clean kill without the animal suffering and making sure it’s living in good conditions, that’s a right step in many ways.

Can someone explain the following?

1. Is it natural for CFO's to receive that many options? The executive compensation chart looks like CFO receives much more than anyone else. 2. https://imgur.com/a/Jl6W1P8 Do they not share the % shares owned by everyone until IPO?

gizmodo59··on SpaceX successfully launches two humans into orbit
Unemployment and poverty are always going to be there and never be 100% removed. Not in the near future.

Wouldn’t starting a space mission create thousands of direct and indirect jobs?

These advancements are not taking money away from them. The research we did towards all of the space travel in the past 6 decades have given us dividends on several fronts.

gizmodo59··on Facebook to Buy Giphy for $400M
I'd argue a gif sent to someone during a heated conversation can make it light and end up funny. This goes for anything that anyone uses. I wouldn't compare this with smoking though.

gizmodo59··on Report on the Bezos Phone Hack [pdf]
May be he did not find any good reason to upgrade? Sometimes its just not worth the time rather than the money part. I'm sure a lot of people here feel the same even though they have the means to buy one every year.
gizmodo59··on Boeing 777X: World’s largest twin-engine jet completes first flight
They can ride quite a while due to the fact that there is only one alternative in commercial flight (Airbus). I hope there is not a time when both companies have such an issue at the same time. That would disrupt travel.

gizmodo59··on The We Company S-1
Isn’t that like a trend these days? Unless I’m missing something, can you please explain?
gizmodo59··on The We Company S-1
The executive compensation looks interesting.

I wish they publish the ceo salary before 2018. Is that more for a public perception?

And we see only CFO/Legal and no one else.

gizmodo59··on Amazon Web Services CEO: We’re a $30b revenue business in the ‘early stages’
Internet in US is just terrible for 90% of the population. Even if you are in the Bay Area or Manhattan you are still getting bad speed and you are stuck with a provider like Spectrum or Comcast and you pay 70$ for 150-200Mbps. I just don’t see this changing anytime soon :(
gizmodo59··on Tim Cook: You Deserve Privacy Online. Here’s How You Could Get It
I ve said this before but I ll say it again, between GOOG/FB/MSFT Apple seems to be doing more to privacy and it’s mainly in part due to their business model where most of their revenue comes just from selling products and not ads. (May be MSFT is more diversified than the other two). It will be interesting to see how this plays out in their favor.
