giwook··on OpenAI adds $500 Pro tier, nerfs existing $200 tier
OpenAI's new Pro 500 plan offers OpenAI's highest usage allowance and comes with access to its new "Ultrafast" feature — it also costs $500 per month.

At the same time, OpenAI is also making its existing $200 Pro plan less appealing. In Codex and Work, $200 Pro subscribers will see their included usage decrease from 20x of what the company offers to Plus users, down to 10x of that same allowance. In ChatGPT, meanwhile, GPT-6 Pro message caps will decrease from 200 to 100 per week. According to the company, existing subscribers will keep their current limits for a time, and will later receive a one-time credit to help them make the most of their new reduced allowances.

giwook··on GPT 6.1 Sol: Near-Astra intelligence for a fifth of the price
Everyone uses it differently. Not sure what the intent is of these kinds of posts.

Some people are able to take advantage of the increased capabilities that frontier models give us. For others, working with open weight models (that are extremely good in their own right) is good enough.

Deepseek models are very impressive. No one's debating that.

But frontier models are definitively ahead. Perhaps not by much in some areas, but there are clear gaps.

And that is kind of the point I think. Open source models add a much needed source of competition to the world of LLMs and are very much an important counterweight to the dominance of Anthropic and OpenAI.

Yes, we must pace the frontier, now that we have raced to the lead.

Right, you could just walk down the street in 1861 and place a bet the way you could walk down the street and buy alcohol.

Wait, no. You couldn't.

giwook··on New York Times and The Athletic workers demand company scrap Kalshi deal
It's not nearly as available as alcohol or drugs. Of course the percentage will be lower.
giwook··on New York Times and The Athletic workers demand company scrap Kalshi deal
Where is that "less than 1%" figure coming from or did you just pull that out from you-know-where?

And alcohol has always been highly accessible. I have 5 stores within a 5 minute walk of me that I can get it from, and that's not to mention all of the restaurants and bars within that same radius.

Addiction is addiction. Alcohol is one object of that addiction. Sports betting can be another. Porn, food, drugs, etc.

What's to say sports betting addiction won't become as severe as alcohol now that it's becoming more accessible to the public?

Let's be careful about anthropomorphizing large language models.

They are probabilistic models that are simply giving you words in a sequence they think makes the most sense to them.

No one is "lying" to you :)

giwook··on Apple introduces M6 and M5 Ultra
I think for a while it was because they had a superior user experience that would compound with the more Apple products you acquired.

That, combined with sleek marketing and a good eye for product design, and building what was the best smartphone by far (IMO) in the world at the time it was first released, snowballed into Apple becoming the behomoth it is today.

I had to read it a few times to parse what you meant but now that I have, this actually makes a lot of sense.
giwook··on Z.ai confirms Ox Alpha is a new GLM-series model and will release its weights
I disagree. I think most users who are savvy enough to be using openweight models and/or running models locally are not dealing with the same level of confusion you are.

Ox is just GLM. And z.ai is the maker of GLM.

The main players in the openweight model market have been known for a while.

And they already have significant user penetration.

It's interesting to see how defensive some of these pro-China posters get on HN and elsewhere. I'm genuinely curious why there seems to be an inferiority complex here with respect to America/American companies.

You must not have been using agents for very long then because this behavior has been around for some time now.

Why would anyone do that given how subsidized subscription usage is?

If anything they'd keep the sub and use the API if they blow past the usage.
