gitrog··on Uncensor any LLM with abliteration
The scale at which LLMs can do this and how convincing they can be means it can potentially be a much bigger problem.

We won't keep the bottle corked forever though. It's like we're just buying ourselves time to figure out how we're going to deal with the deluge of questionable generated content that's about to hit us.

gitrog··on How real is America’s chipmaking renaissance?
Capitalism doesn't have desires outside of those of the people who participate in it that hold the most power. The desire of those people is more power. Not resource allocation as an ends, but as a means to more profit.

It has been shown time and time again that the majority of the powerful players in a Capitalist economy inherited their wealth or opportunities.

Capitalism can only function in an economy if a government allows it by setting up the necessary structures and allowing private property ownership.

Society can certainly be Capitalist by extension of the economy being Capitalist due to policies and strucutes set up by goverments.

gitrog··on Profit-Price Spiral: Excess Profits Fuelling Inflation, Not Wages
This claim is baffling to me. Are you saying without state intervention Amazon wouldn't just buy out every potential competitor or drive them out of business using currently regulated tactics?
gitrog··on Profit-Price Spiral: Excess Profits Fuelling Inflation, Not Wages
They do mention monetary policy. Is there something specific about monetary policy that you believe contributed to rising inflation?

I don't know if they're suggesting that corporations became greedy but rather that they unilaterally increased prices during the pandemic which is the main cause of inflation.

I'm sorry to go in a tangeant here, but, what? That's an incredibly strange statement to make.

Could someone explain how this "breaking" works?
gitrog··on Metal Archives 20th Anniversary
I mean the line needs to be drawn somewhere, right? It's not that a band isn't "metal enough", it's just that they have a bunch of rules interpreted by mods and if it doesn't fit those rules they make the editorial decision to exclude it. It's impossible to have some kind of perfect description anyway.

Rush were added probably in the first year or two of the site's existence, so they probably kept them on their for nostalgia.

gitrog··on Metal Archives 20th Anniversary
I wouldn't take that list too seriously. Metal-archives genres tend to not delve into "styles" as much. But there are certainly many distinct sub-genres and one can't exactly argue that Black Sabbath, Dimmu Borgir and Cannibal Corpse sound similar.

I agree that the community itself takes the genre thing way too far and it often ends up being pretty funny.

Then again, electronic music probably gives metal a run for its money: https://music.ishkur.com/

gitrog··on Metal Archives 20th Anniversary
If there is anything like the Metal Archives for electronic music or rock music (actually any genre) out there, I'd like to know about it. It's simply the greatest music encyclopedia I've come across, albeit entirely focused on metal.

As much as I appreciate Discogs and RateYourMusic, they tackle different things and don't really function as encyclopedias, the former functioning more as a catalogue and the latter as a way to track and list your favourite albums.

Edit: Looks like this post resulted in a hug of death over on metal-archives.com!

gitrog··on Housing is at the root of many of the rich world’s problems (2020)
I'm sorry but your answer to Q1 is extremely naive. There is no way that activity from renters will even remotely approach the power of those who own property in politics. The latter group can lobby and make campaign donations, the former can't exactly...

The best thing you'll get is a campaign promise to do something about it, but not much action. The only way something will actually be done about it is if the effects of it become economically catastrophic or people start rioting en masse.

gitrog··on The world is awful, the world is much better, the world can be much better
It seems to me that the first two are statements, and the final one is a conclusion, which is the only one that's productive to focus on.

gitrog··on Tell HN: Dropbox user age verification feature can lock your account
Hi, thanks for the offer, I caved and provided Dropbox support with a copy of my passport and that seemed to be enough to resolve the issue (I hope, I really really hope).

If you work at Dropbox I think it could still be useful to raise some of the concerns mentioned here with whoever is the product owner of this feature.

gitrog··on Tell HN: Dropbox user age verification feature can lock your account
Does the law also state that you can't fix the date afterwards, or that once entered verification is required? It's a paid account, they've already got my credit card details. And how does it make sense that I was born 2 weeks ago?

I don't know, I felt really stupid when I entered the wrong year but since then I've grown increasingly frustrated by how poorly this feature has been implemented.

gitrog··on I need to stop being boring
I don't think this holds true as generally as might seem obvious. Personally I become much more productive and much more creative when I have serious pressure on me. I think art history also speaks to this if you think about all the artists who did their best work (or all their work) under very difficult conditions such as poverty, abuse or simply having been pressed for time.

Prot is one of the most well spoken, humble, deliberate and wholesome people I've ever come across. Absolutely crazy to think that he came to Emacs and Lisp without any technical background and just started contributing.

Cheers to you, Prot!

It should be, but Bitcoin's influence on other crypto currencies will still outweigh their own growth vectors for a little while.

If Bitcoin stabilises a bit from here I think we'll see Ethereum continue to grow a bit again.

I don't particularly believe BTC is the messiah, but if the internet in your country goes down, how do you imagine you're going to get the money in your bank account? You might rush to an ATM before they get swarmed, but you're definitely not withdrawing all your money and transferring won't be an option.

gitrog··on Dr. Seuss books deemed offensive will be delisted from eBay
I believe you don't have that archive because it doesn't exist. Ultimately people who are "supporters of cancel culture" most likely aren't explicitly that, they just don't agree with your definition of cancel culture [1]

Those people then receiving retribution for some action (whether they deem it reasonable or not) doesn't necessarily imply that they've come to see things your way.
