gilbertmpanga12··on Ask HN: Freelancer? Seeking freelancer? (August 2024)
SEEKING WORK - I'm a hacker type i.e full-stack with frontend and backend skills & I learn fast. I have worked with react / react-native/ angular , node and python, low code deployment (vercel, AWS lambda, dynamo db and firebase).

What I'm I looking for? Minimal contracts i.e I also don't mind being the guy in the cogs , fixing bugs, shipping features, reviewing PRs etc .

gilbertmpanga12··on Ask HN: How Do You Feel?
Good just starting the day, just finished house work now ready to code
gilbertmpanga12··on Ask HN: What Do You Want?
To understand God deeply, bring my ideas to life
gilbertmpanga12··on Ask HN: Firstbase vs. Stripe Atlas vs. Others- Which is better in 2022?
Used First base it's cheaper and took me 2 weeks to get up and running . Ps I'm from Uganda.. Firstbase supports stripe , sets your US bank account with mecury.io (you need a passport of your country to finish create this)

Things to watch our for: * You need to file tax reports regardless if you made zero sales. I hired a guy from fiverr , he did it for just $48

* Every June 1st, you have to file annual returns report to Wyoming and that costs about $209 for anonymous option or $111 for public option

gilbertmpanga12··on Ask HN: Why is Elon Musk focused on better transportation in the internet age?
Traffic congestion costs losses of billions of dollars each year. No single app can fix that & mind of not everyone sits behind a computer every day.

gilbertmpanga12··on Ask HN: How to improve as a struggling junior software engineer?
Holy snakes that's the exact same position I'm in. I still suck at finishing stories, shipping stuff etc.

One thing that I've learned to boost my speed a little bit up is:

1. Ask tones of questions before implementation, even if they're stupid ask. Asking and knowing the right thing will help you prevent wasting time building something that wasn't needed

2. Ship the simplest piece of code that solves the problem. Don't be afraid if it's not fancy, or not optimised. You'll think of that later on.

3. Then before you go down to code, please spend almost an hour brain storming the entire problem through, think through all entire edge cases required for the problem.

4. I also sucked at stand up meetings , terrified I hadn't finished my stories. Keep them short 2 max, at least explain how far you've gone with the problem. If you don't have anything to show, at least mention something related to your progress.

Lastly , budget your time and always be optimistic , I've realised most things I presumed were hard but as long you're optimistic and tackle them , some how you find yourself shipping things

gilbertmpanga12··on Ask HN: How long did it take to learn your first programming language?
I failed countless times always procrastinating and getting intimidated.

My journey: I learned about html and it clicked fast then got introduced to C & C++, but shit was so hard I didn't know what I was typing even

Then I moved to C# , installed Vs studio but still things weren't clicking

A friend suggested python is easiest , but when I tried I got discouraged, I didn't know how indenting worked, most of my programs failed so I dropped it.

Then I attempted again with JavaScript, early days of react js when SPAs were hot, I still failed. Angular js was more easier but still couldn't put up anything.

I gave up and took a break, that was after failing for a whole year, nothing clicking.

I tried again the following year, and that's when I heard about ruby and rails. I downloaded Learn enough rails to be dangerous, and walked through the tutorial step by step, finished my twitter clone, was amazed that I had a twitter clone!

This inspired me to learn more, there's a way ruby abstracted simple concepts into readable syntax , non scary cryptic stuff. It was almost like plain English.

This made me realize why I was failing, the languages I had started with introduced advanced concepts so fast without telling you why such things exist in the first place.

I mean writing a class just to print first hello world is such an overkill. Plus many languages use strange symbols & syntax that look intimidating.

Now, I can learn any language in just minutes or a day. Overall it took me 1 year and about 6 months . More solid knowledge has been learned on working on projects at companies

All the best

gilbertmpanga12··on Seeking Advice
Dev.to and freecodecamp, feel free to reach out :)
gilbertmpanga12··on Ask HN: What language/framework you thought was the future but ended up dying?
polymer + haskell
gilbertmpanga12··on A Chrome extension that hunts for jobs and opportunities on the web for you
Hey thanks for signing up, we are shipping soon.

Pretty curios, was the message clear, is the problem you face too?

gilbertmpanga12··on Fast.ai and why Python is not the future of ML with Jeremy Howard
I think you're trying to oversell here, Scala is bloated with lots of paradigms and lots of features. It's pretty hard to know what to use. Python in most ML frameworks is just a frontend, other beefy stuff gets processed by c++ or c
gilbertmpanga12··on Poll: Where Are You From?
Kampala, Uganda
gilbertmpanga12··on Ask HN: Where can I find quality, free scientific articles and research papers?
Here's my argument for using https://sci-hub.tw/

* It's a form of reparations i.e if you belong to one of the folks who were victimized by colonialists, what more other way to pay back by using such a tool. After all the heavily guarded science corporations + universities were built with such privilege & stolen wealth

* Another one is we pay lots of taxes for this research but it keeps gated by corporations that pay zero taxes

* Last reason fuck it! Do it Louis Pasteur style;- never followed so-called medical ethics, relied on secrecy and dirty tricks to invent tech that still impacts modern day society to date ANTI BIOTICS

gilbertmpanga12··on Incident: Ethiopian B737 at Dire Dawa on Jan 9th, swarm of grasshoppers
The article states grasshoppers. In Uganda, grasshoppers are a big business! They're yummy and tasty. Checkout here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nsenene
gilbertmpanga12··on Brave Isn't Bad
When did you last use Firefox? I do mobile app development and observed when I use brave, it spins a bunch of tiny processes plus it's memory intensive as chrome. With Firefox I can open up multiple tabs + run Android studio without slowing down my machine
gilbertmpanga12··on Go + Services = One Goliath Project
Looks super lit with everything baked;- faster compilation, small binaries, and performance... Still scared to jump in
gilbertmpanga12··on Cancer cells die in microgravity conditions – study
That's what I was thinking as well. It maybe solar radiation or some other stuff we haven't yet identified or hardly created an understanding of how they affect cancer cells. Overall it's exciting stuff :)

gilbertmpanga12··on Robinhood Stored Passwords in Plaintext
Looks like storing in text is now a trend will do this in rest of my projects.
gilbertmpanga12··on Launch HN: Cloosiv (YC S19) – Order ahead from local coffee shops
At first I was holyshit not another toy-app startup, but the scientific method the founder used here is pretty mindblowing, we take coffee each day and never realise the economics and science behind it :)
gilbertmpanga12··on Libra, 2 Weeks In
Libra indeed, is such a huge win for 3rd world countries because cross border payments are way to expensive plus if you're starting a tech startup with hopes of earning from US, or Canada, it's impossible because Stripe, or Paypal are not supported, so they're left out. Libra is great for Startups with global ambitions :)
gilbertmpanga12··on Show HN: Afroic – Reddit for Africa
Pretty limiting, HN is the wrong platform to market this kind of product.
gilbertmpanga12··on Viruses Can Scatter Their Genes Among Cells and Reassemble
They are ninjas... Isn't this phenomena similar to the way biomarkers from antibodies work?
gilbertmpanga12··on Goldman Sachs asks: 'Is curing patients a sustainable business model?'
Says Goldman Sachs the money men. Even if there's a prevention model, anomalies are inevitable and what if anomalies are frequent would simply just let those people die because of your profits?
gilbertmpanga12··on Payments on the Solid Framework
