gield··on Shimano Bicycle Museum Review
Nowadays they use the 2021 version of the Canyon Endurace CF SL 7. And the Shimano neutral support team is used in most World Tour races, not only in the Tour de France.

The Shimano neutral support team has a list with the materials each team is using, so they can quickly get the correct bike from their car and hand it to a rider if needed. You can see an example of the list here [1]. For example, you can see that they know the pedals used by each team.

This one [1]? It's a huge villa (not on an island) plus 2 islands for that price, so not really comparable.

I found a more representative example of an island with a house that is currently for sale [2]. It is listed for €1.5 million.

gield··on Decathlon Germany adds Wero payment option to decathlon.de website
>Decathlon switched on Wero on decathlon.de on July 20, making Germany the first market in the French group’s international footprint to carry the European payment scheme.

This is not true, it has been available on the Belgian website (decathlon.be) for months.

For some use cases, AI has been profitable for at least a decade.
gield··on Sawe becomes first athlete to run a sub-two-hour marathon in a competitive race
The last few years, cycling and triathlon have been experimenting with upto 120g carbs intake per hour. Last year, Cameron Wurf ate 200g carbs per hour when he broke the world record for fastest bike split ever in a triathlon (which was broken again a few months later).

gield··on Škoda DuoBell: A bicycle bell that penetrates noise-cancelling headphones
This might seem weird coming from a car manufacturer but Skoda is a big sponsor of cycling races, most notably of the Tour de France and other ASO races. And as explained in the footer, they started out with building bicycles in the 19th century.
gield··on 10-202: Introduction to Modern AI (CMU)
Your analogy to computer architectures doesn't make sense, unless comparing GPT-like LLMs to different LLM architectures like Mamba or RWKV. It indeed wouldn't make sense to not teach about Mamba or RWKV in an introductory AI or LLM course.

AI is much broader than LLMs alone. Computer vision, RL, classical ML, recommender systems, speech recognition, ... are still part of AI, just not very visible to the average consumer.

gield··on I was banned from Claude for scaffolding a Claude.md file?
It's not an actual file but as a variable in a js file. The last link in the blog post does link to a commit with a file that contains the instructions for Claude, lines 129-737.

gield··on Daniel Kahneman opted for assisted suicide in Switzerland
Can you please list some of those examples?

You didn't mention Belgium so I'm pleased to hear that Belgium is doing well according to you (4000 cases of euthanasia per year of which 80 are for psychological suffering, 1 child per year).

gield··on Daniel Kahneman opted for assisted suicide in Switzerland
What kind of psychopath is against people dying in a dignified way?
gield··on Daniel Kahneman opted for assisted suicide in Switzerland
Coincidentally, today there was an article in a Belgian newspaper about a 25-year-old woman who will undergo euthanasia in a few weeks due to severe psychological suffering with no prospect of improvement. After years of suffering and 40 failed suicide attempts, I indeed think it's much more dignified to have euthanasia as an option.

Euthanasia has some strict rules in Belgium, especially for cases involving psychological suffering. In 2014, the age restriction was dropped (except for psychological suffering). Since then, 6 minors have received euthanasia.

If you want to see a ridiculous amount of escalators, take a look at the Collblanc station in Barcelona. It takes 6 escalators to transfer between the L5 and L9S lines.

I'm in a country that uses the 24 hour clock. We also say we meet at 4 or at 10, and are able to derive from context whether that means in the evening or in the morning.
gield··on Control shopping cart wheels with your phone (2021)
>in the Netherlands (or neighbouring countries)

Most supermarkets in Belgium use a coin but some supermarkets (notably Colruyt) lock their shopping cart wheels.

Supermarkets that have a step-less escalator (e.g. to go to the parking lot in the basement) also use these locking wheels to make sure the cart never moves on the escalator. I live near an Albert Heijn that has these.

gield··on Don't guess my language
Oh yes, I'm sure it's the same for French-speaking Belgians! And probably 100 times worse for German-speaking Belgians.
gield··on Ask HN: Conversational AI to Learn a Language
I'm a native Dutch speaker and tried this out for a bit. It works impressively well although it might be challenging for complete beginners. Maybe you can add an option for the trainer to use more simple language for beginners?

I tried practicing some verb conjugations. The trainer displayed some fill-in-the-blank sentences like "she ... home after class", asking me to conjugate "to walk" in that sentence. However, the audio actually pronounced the full sentence "she walks home after class", giving away the answer.

gield··on Don't guess my language
This is a real pain in the ass in Belgium. Many websites assume I speak French while my native language is Dutch. Some websites only offer a French version of their Belgian storefront, even though Dutch accounts for ~60% of Belgians. I can't imagine what it's like for German-speaking Belgians.

This is not only an issue on websites but also on apps. For example, the Books and Podcasts apps on iOS show me both Dutch-speaking and French-speaking titles. I tried to raise this issue back when I worked at Apple but they only have 1 storefront per country and didn't feel like changing it.

gield··on Why I'm Boycotting AI
AI is not only LLMs or other generative AI. There is also FaceID, Siri, even the camera uses AI. The author also doesn't make this distinction, sadly.

Indeed, but the neural engine does this faster and using heavier models. For example, on-device Siri was not possible until the introduction of the neural engine in 2017.
