gibbonsrcool··on Using Stable Diffusion's img2img on some old Sierra titles
If you have over 4MB VRAM you can run it locally. I've been experimenting recently and find that even with 10MB VRAM I can only get 256x256 resolution images. I have a Dockerfile I can share that packages up the install process and removes censorship if anyone is interested. I find the censoring is extremely conservative.
gibbonsrcool··on How bad is my gas stove?
My original comment was saying that when trying to make comparisons between types of stoves food emissions are controlled.
gibbonsrcool··on How bad is my gas stove?
There is an implicit comparison through the research he cites. It’s also almost certain the reader would be using this information to decide on moving away from gas. No one is trying to use this information to make a decision on whether to abandon cooking. They want to know how bad gas stoves pollute indoor air so they can weigh their decision to go electric.
gibbonsrcool··on How bad is my gas stove?
You might wanna take a second look at the title of the article.
gibbonsrcool··on How bad is my gas stove?
The author is comparing cooking between different types of stoves, not indoor air quality between different activities. I believe you would call this a controlled variable, for example by making sure you cook the same meal, at the same quantity, the same way. Real scientists can correct me.

Leetcode style interviews allow companies to practice ageism under the guise of testing for qualified candidates.
gibbonsrcool··on Cornell McRay T'Racing
Does this harm nvidia? I don’t do graphics programming but I would imagine they have a lot of tech to make shadow and many other hacks run fast. Does ray tracing simplify game rendering even though it would require more FLOPS?
gibbonsrcool··on Omicron variant was 73% of U.S. covid cases last week
I keep thinking about this. If you combine the probabilities that the virus will evade vaccines along with it mutating to be deadly, the combination is probably a very small number. However, Omicron is spreading all over the world which increases the chance this happens.
gibbonsrcool··on Worker pay isn’t keeping up with inflation
Except for their role as referee. Forcing banks to implement their real time payments system FedNow seems like a good thing, but I’m just learning about it.
gibbonsrcool··on Reddit files to go public
Get rid of the current moderators and pay professionals. Automate the universal rules and use these folks to steer content back to when it was most meaningful. Also dedicate as many resources as possible to identify and prevent astroturfing and shills.
gibbonsrcool··on Webb placed on top of Ariane 5
I would love to see a video where one of the engineers on the project talked about what would be different if Webb was started today. Materials, software, processes, everything!
gibbonsrcool··on Intel updates mysterious ‘software-defined silicon’ code in the Linux kernel
Well, it's not for lack of ambition. Their roadmap has them back on top with 18A in 2024. They also have plans to make a zettascale (yes zetta) supercomputer by 2027 +- 1 year. As much as intel is known for stifling progress, so have all (most/many?) encumbant monopolies. I hope they stay close enough to AMD, and vice versa, for healthy competition.

gibbonsrcool··on Crypto exchange BitMart confirms hack resulting in loss of $150M
Is it possible to move bitcoin between wallets through tumbling or other means so as to make it impossible to trace back to the original wallet? If not with bitcoin alone, would it be possible going through other coins as intermediates or even ending up in another cryptocurrency so long as the trail was impossible to follow?

gibbonsrcool··on ‘Dancing molecules’ successfully repair severe spinal cord injuries
I've always wondered... and so far have been unable to Google this: Does the non-nucleus part of a severed nerve cell die? If so, that would mean we only have a small window to "rejoin" severed CNS nerve cells, right? Nerve cells can be very long, I think up to a meter. I'd assume this includes spinal nerve cells of the CNS, which don't regrow. If the cells are severed, like in a spinal injury, that means there's a half-cell fragment with a nucleus, and the other half is the axon that's been cut away without a nucleus. Wouldn't the fragment without a nucleus shrivel up and die? That would be my intuition because I'd assume the nucleus is necessary to keep a cell alive.
gibbonsrcool··on To Breed or Not to Breed?
The way this phrase is used, as popularized by Netflix, they mean to say they don’t hesitate to fire underperformers.
gibbonsrcool··on To Breed or Not to Breed?
It's the economic insecurity that does it for me. Everytime I see "we're a team not a family" or the like, I realize how dispensible I am. It's not the content of the message, it's the fact you have to say it. It's a gentle nudge that, hey, remember you don't mean shit to us, ok?
gibbonsrcool··on UC slams the door on standardized admissions tests, nixing any SAT alternative
Let’s separate sports from academics. Sports organizations can exist outside the school. I’m suggesting this for all ages. Players can compete in divisions based on skill without school grouping as a factor. A lot of kids don’t play sports because they’re not competitive enough at their school. With these extra-academic divisions there’s more players for each pool of skill level. Another benefit is connecting people across different socioeconomic backgrounds.
gibbonsrcool··on The Polarization Spiral
Someone could make a site similar to the one that retains deleted Reddit comments. But I agree it would be better to manage our own censorship anywhere online.
gibbonsrcool··on Show HN: Document and automate your operations playbooks and business processes
I'm a software engineer who has a hospital COO for a parent, my mom! Earlier in the pandemic she asked me about building an app to help with managing vaccination of hospital staff, something that spreadsheets and other ad hoc tools were being used for, that was pretty clumsy. I said that it'd be best to find existing products, creating something like that would definitely be beyond a one-man project (for me at least) but something so specific might be hard to find and it might be best to make due. I mentioned your product to her as something to keep an eye on as it might fit similar uses cases.

After reading your top comment, it got me thinking about the world of SaaS and no-code products like yours working together. It seems products like Zapier are used to automate and share data between apps, but that type of integration seems to require connections between each pair of products. Smaller products might get left out. Could there be demand for a product that maintains data in a middle ground between a set of products, allowing for a hub and spoke model of managing data? This would move the source of truth to a middle ground that could be easily shared, if the right no-code management layer existed on top of it. Maybe something like this already exists?

Good luck, your product looks great! I look forward to seeing how the world is changed by the democratization of creating apps.

gibbonsrcool··on My experience of losing a friend to heroin (2020)
Severe pain can last quite a while after surgery. As someone who had multiple jaw surgeries, including one double jaw surgery, I know a hospital couldn’t keep me that long, nor could I afford it. Luckily for me, morphine makes me feel bad. It makes my heart pound and I just get this overall bad feeling. Oxycodone and hydrocodone pills were awesome, which is why I made a conscious effort to switch to plain Tylenol as soon as I could manage and throw them out. I haven’t felt the need to seek out pills again. Probably just a lucky feature of my brain.

What if we required lifetime warranties for everything? By lifetime I mean human lifetime, not lifetime if the device. It sounds crazy when thinking how it’d work out in practice, especially with electronics, but we need drastic action like this to respond to climate change.
gibbonsrcool··on Ask HN: People who cashed out early and stopped working: What is your life like?
This is mind boggling. Bored? You have all your free time to literally do anything you want. You can explore the outdoors. You can learn ANYTHING you want. You could get to know more of the worlds 6 billion people and their cultures. Volunteer, start a new hobby, spend more time with family and friends, work on personal growth, exercise... you have Stockholm syndrome, snap out of it.
gibbonsrcool··on Ask HN: People who cashed out early and stopped working: What is your life like?
Please don’t listen to this. These are the words of someone who allowed work to destroy the part of themselves that had their own hopes and dreams. Only a shell that could take directions was left.
