giantg2··on California is chasing wealth that has feet
The main problem with this view is that land value is laggard to the economy. You will end up taxing people more than what the land is actually worth during downturns, instigating a vicious feedback loop to cause further problems. The logical path is to tax money where there is money - income.
giantg2··on Owners mourn spoiled food after firmware update bricks Samsung smart fridges
Some of that might just be bleed over from their non-smart devices. My dumb Samsung washer, monitor, etc have been great. And yes, part of my decision involves the ratings/reviews. They are point-in-time and wont catch an issue 5 years from now, but they will help you avoid models that have immediate issues.
giantg2··on Teen Social Media Bans Miss the Point
What education will do is show that to the world. Then we might legislate privacy mechanisms that would make this sort of abuse illegal and less likely to occur for all people.
giantg2··on Teen Social Media Bans Miss the Point
It's not about content. Modern games have similar addictive traits, and they even admit it. Stuff like loot crates, custom skins, pay to unlock stuff early, etc. Even things like "seasons" and rank resets because without them "engagement was dropping".
giantg2··on Sherline Tools Is Going Out of Business
I thought of that and may still go that route if I really need a precision metal part. But it's a drive and I can do most stuff with other tools. I could even 3D print a part, mold it, then cast it in metal if I need to.
giantg2··on Sherline Tools Is Going Out of Business
I had a cheap Ender 3 Pro for years. It had occasional issues, but they were fairly easy to solve due to the large user base. It was great to learn on since you had to learn the concepts and do some stuff like leveling manually. So even the cheap stuff can work fine.
giantg2··on Sherline Tools Is Going Out of Business
I want a small lathe and mill. The prices are just too high to justify with my limited use. Instead, I use a 3D printer and I'm making a CNC router.
giantg2··on Teen Social Media Bans Miss the Point
The reason social media bans miss yhe point is because they will be replaced by other addictive/predatory technology, such as gaming. It's wack-a-mole - ban one thing and another pops up. Parental involvement and school education about addiction in all its forms is the best (not perfect) solution. The goal is to allow adolescents to grow into knowledge and responsible adults. Infantilizing them and delaying their exposure to the world only delays that development. And most age verification tech just undermines privacy.
giantg2··on New $100k H-1B visa fee pushes tech jobs offshore
Bringing new labor into the market isn't an optimal solution in the current market either. If it's a problem, simply tax offshore labor.
giantg2··on Growing proof that autonomous cars save lives
Fault matters in general, but it's not captured in the stats so you can't make an accurate comparison.
giantg2··on Growing proof that autonomous cars save lives
I imagine these same people are the type of people who would throw something out the window of an AV too.
giantg2··on Growing proof that autonomous cars save lives
It doesn't have to be a surveillance state for enforcement. Just preventing repeat offenders would practically remove that lowest denominator. For example, I knew a guy in high school who totaled 4 cars and had other minor accidents in 2 years. There's no reason for that person to be allowed to operate a vehicle. On the prevention side, we could require more training.

If you tried to enforce self driving cars, you'd still need some level of surveillance too.

giantg2··on Growing proof that autonomous cars save lives
I was talking more about mandating or encouraging the tech in personal vehicles. I think there's plenty of buy-in for driverless taxis already. It's a perception thing - trust a stranger or trust an automated system. I think it's a much tougher sell to put it in person vehicles, especially due to cost.
giantg2··on Growing proof that autonomous cars save lives
If fatality rates were higher, then maybe. But at 1.3 per 100 million miles, it seems like that would have low effect.
giantg2··on Growing proof that autonomous cars save lives
Better driver education and higher test standards would save lives too. So would banning alcohol. None of these solutions, including automated cars, will be mandated any time soon. It's not enough to have data, you also have to have societal buy-in.

Interesting that Waymo chooses to compare accident rates with the average driver vs the rideshare drivers their cars replace. The numbers wouldn't look as impressive because rideshare drivers are involved in fewer serious accidents than the average person.

Waymo says it has 170 million miles and I found 2 fatal accidents it was involved in (fault doesn't matter as fault is not included in the other stat either). Looks like the average is about 1.3 fatalities per 100 million miles, and about 1 per 100 million miles for CDLs. This doesn't seem that impressive.

If we want adoption, we would need it be placed in individual vehicles and it should look at removing driver liability. People will use it when they are drunk if it means not going to jail and it's readily available.

giantg2··on 216M Spy TVs – The LG Smart TV Problem [video]
I'm so disappointed at the lack of dumb TVs and privacy focused streaming boxes.
giantg2··on No constitutional right to clean water, federal court finds
I didn't. You shouldn't be claiming a specific person down voted you because the system doesn't capture attribution.
giantg2··on No constitutional right to clean water, federal court finds
And this predates by 20 years! Wonder how pastuer faired...
giantg2··on No constitutional right to clean water, federal court finds
It wouldn't have taken decades. Information might have taken a year or two. Decisions on what to do with that may take longer. I find it unlikely that germ theory wasn't known by those involved with the 14th amendment, even though it wasnt based on it.
giantg2··on No constitutional right to clean water, federal court finds
Things taking a year or two was normal, but 8 years is plenty of time. There were long distance publications in many areas of the world even earlier in time. You can look at how every back in the 1700s Benjamin Franklin had a newspaper across the US and routinely corresponded with Europe.
giantg2··on No constitutional right to clean water, federal court finds
It should just be criminal reckless endangerment since they knowingly provided unsafe water.
giantg2··on No constitutional right to clean water, federal court finds
Germ theory really started around 1860 and the 14th amendment was 1868. Seems they both coexisted.
giantg2··on No constitutional right to clean water, federal court finds
It should just be reckless endangerment criminal charges - they knew it was unsafe and provided it anyways.
giantg2··on Record-High 89% in U.S. Say Government Corruption Widespread
It's only 17% higher than in 2010. Seems like a majority believed the government was corrupt prior to Trump.
giantg2··on Record-High 89% in U.S. Say Government Corruption Widespread
Lots of people here are focused on one guy. But the the article says "widespread". In my experience, much of the corruption is at a local or state level. At the federal level it seems the corruption is mostly related to agencies (GAO reports) and lobbying.
giantg2··on A Small Telescope That Surprised Me
That's included. For example, I'm building a kiln to fuse the glass. That's where the biggest cost is.
giantg2··on Sanders introduces bill to ban artificial superintelligence and pause AI
"post-scarcity society"

Labor is one thing, but there will always be some scarcity such as natural resources. I still doubt all labor could be done by AI alone at any point in the next couple generations.

giantg2··on A Small Telescope That Surprised Me
I don't know. I doubt I can get an 16"-18" mirror for under $300.
giantg2··on A Small Telescope That Surprised Me
I plan on grinding my own. That seems like it can be cheap too.
giantg2··on Cheap GPS jammers are filling the world with navigation dead zones
This really shouldn't be a problem. We were lazy with GPS. Maps, compasses, altimeters, etc all still exist. They might not offer the same precision as GPS, but they can easily fill the gaps. We already have inertia guidance systems for munitions. That's pretty accurate and similar in theory.
