ghostpepper··on ROCm Device Support Wishlist
I can understand wanting to prioritize support for the cards people want to use most, but they should still plan to write software support for all the cards that have hardware support.
ghostpepper··on Meta announces 5% cuts in preparation for 'intense year'
I think it's slightly creepy and displays a major lack of socialization and self-awareness and do not at all wish I had made.

Which prusa would you recommend for someone switching from a bambu P1S? Primary requirements are single-color PLA and PETG with a comparable ease of use, speed and print quality.
ghostpepper··on Reverse Engineering Bambu Connect
what else would it be auth'ing against if not Bambu servers?

ghostpepper··on Supreme Court upholds TikTok ban, but Trump might offer lifeline
Can't confirm as I don't speak Chinese but Sharp China podcast says this is a mistranslation, and that the word for Mao's little red book is not the same as the Chinese name for Rednote
ghostpepper··on Pushing the whole company into the past on purpose
I wonder how much those broadcast/studio clocks are worth. I looked everywhere to find a digital alarm clock with orange LEDs and couldn't find one.
ghostpepper··on I am rich and have no idea what to do
Choose companies to work for based on who you will be working with and what they can teach you, not by how much they pay. You never want to be the smartest person in the room.
ghostpepper··on I am rich and have no idea what to do
It's called management and the entry point is usually called tech lead / team lead or just manager. Mentoring juniors is a good way to start.
ghostpepper··on More telcos confirm Salt Typhoon breaches as White House weighs in
It’s not practically open source though - how many people actually build it themselves and sideload onto their Android/iphone?

How much effort would it be for the US government to force Google to ship a different APK from everyone else to a single individual?

ghostpepper··on Spherical Harmonics
Anyone know a good explanation of what spherical harmonics are?
ghostpepper··on Interpol wants everyone to stop saying 'pig butchering'
> Many people may find the word "rape" to evoke more unpleasant emotions than the more muted "sexual assault,"

IMHO the action being described evokes an extremely strong emotion, and therefore so too should the word we use.

ghostpepper··on Interpol wants everyone to stop saying 'pig butchering'
Was going to post this if someone else hadn’t already

There's a good discussion of how this is implemented cryptographically https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BLGFriOKz6U
ghostpepper··on Meta does a U-turn, will share its technology with Five Eyes members
it was Mark Dowd's firm, Azimuth Security - not just some contractor, he literally wrote the book on memory safety vulnerabilities
ghostpepper··on Researchers are questioning if ADHD should be seen as a disorder
The article seems to contradict this:

> Scientists looking to simplify matters with a checklist of biological markers of adhd have come up empty-handed. Two people with adhd may exhibit similar symptoms caused by entirely different underlying psychological and neurological processes. Imaging studies that have examined the structure and workings of the brain have failed to agree on what, if anything, characterises the adhd brain.

ghostpepper··on M4 MacBook Pro
This is a common saying but in reality, security through obscurity is widely deployed and often effective.

More pragmatic advice would be to not rely solely on security through obscurity, but rather to practice defence in depth.

ghostpepper··on Show HN: RF Hunter – Find hidden cameras and other devices
This is cool. Is is all point-to-point wired inside? I can't imagine a PCB design would be too difficult if all the RF stuff is handled by the IC.
ghostpepper··on Where the Digital Sidewalk Ends
I wanted to see the map but I got hit with a registration form asking for my zip code, but I don't live in the US.
ghostpepper··on Where the Digital Sidewalk Ends
Not sure why you want a fake email / zip code in your database but okay
ghostpepper··on Amazon reveals first color Kindle, new Kindle Scribe, and more
> Kindle only shows "minutes left in chapter" which is functionally useless

The kindle recomputes your reading pace as you go, so unless you prefer to do that math in your head and track your own pages-per-minute moving average, I don't see how it's functionally useless

ghostpepper··on A Journey from Linux to FreeBSD
I hear this claim about security repeated a lot but not everyone agrees[0]. Always interested in hearing perspectives from actual users though. What do you like about their focus on security?

ghostpepper··on A Journey from Linux to FreeBSD
This is fascinating. I always assumed the susceptibility to fork bombs was an inevitable consequence of the Unix process model optimizing for speed of fork.

Do you know why/how BSD handles it better?

ghostpepper··on US weighs Google break-up in landmark antitrust case
> The DoJ could also seek to force Google to share users’ search data with rivals

This is a bit scary. Hopefully this would not be retroactive, and only apply to searches made after the enforcement date?

ghostpepper··on 'Students who use AI as a crutch don't learn anything'
This may be why the practice was invented but I bet there are plenty of teachers who see it more as a way to keep them busy
