ghostdiver··on Protests in Ukraine
This country is pretty much fucked up, criminal as a president, lack of resources, poor people and also European Union bureaucrats are not really interested in Ukraine in its current state. Half of citizines do not speak ukraininan language, they identify themselves as Russians. The other part is only waiting for a moment to gtfo there.
ghostdiver··on Why don't more people play video games?
It's not a social sigma at all. Most of video games are just boring and tiresome. I used to play a lot, but now it's just pointless, playing modern games is not fun.

Prices for AAA+ titles are also ridiculous. Experience went down the toilet, but prices are the same or even higher, something is wrong.

ghostdiver··on Ask HN: How to branch out past being "just" an engineer?
You can influence direction of products without official title. It's much easier to do that as an engineer.

(now it depends on what you want, official title or the feeling of influencing product decisions)

ghostdiver··on Announcing Scala.js v0.1
Fun stuff, but again, doesn't come with any tools. Microsoft Typescript is much better on that matter.

What javascript universe needs right now is not some more of syntactic sugar clusterfuck followed by debugging nightmare, but real tools, static code analysis. I don't want to waste my precious time dealing with closure compiler+scala something combo. It's fun from programmers POV, but still it won't make me pay my bills!

reality check, please

ghostdiver··on "You're not qualified to join our team"
Why not leave your country? Europe is open for people coming from Brazil, somehow this nation fits into European culture.

ghostdiver··on Copper enables the ARM server ecosystem
JVM or even Postgres can't run or do not perform well on a cluster, because this type of software takes advantage of shared memory, which is a blocker here. You can set up replication in Postgres or use some AMPQ for connecting JVMs, but still I would rather buy 3U machine with 4 CPUs and terabytes of ram for XXk$ rather than buy 3U container for ARM servers for XXk$ and spend XXXk$ on engineering work.

In long run having scalable software is win, but most of businesses will do just fine with unscalable software and good backup strategy, which they would need with ARMs anyways.

ghostdiver··on Copper enables the ARM server ecosystem
This type of infrastructure is not insta win for many(most.. ?) of businesses. Even if the price will be low and the power consumption will make a difference, still there will be HUGE cost of rewriting software.

Not all businesses need to write scalable software, because their current technology stack is just good enough and will always fit to one beefy machine, but on the other hand it will never fit on one ARM server module.

ps. hardware is cheap, while engineering work isn't

ghostdiver··on Do you use code completion and to what extent?
Back in the days of good old Delphi IDE I found some cool addon which had some very cool feature. It was using machine learning to detect some repetitive actions. Like when I get code:

  var poo =
    [1,
     2,
     3,
     4];
and I start changing 1 to '1', 2 -> '2', then the addon all of sudden suggest me completion of other two cells.

It was amazing, too bad this feature did not come back in any of modern IDEs.

I love IntelliJ autocompletion while writing Java code, it increases my productivity so much that I can't imagine coding without it, however it could be better, always:)

ghostdiver··on Sex over distance using affordable consumer teledildonic robots
I'm sure that the technology behind this can be used for something more useful.
ghostdiver··on How do I avoid hiring assholes at my company?
Real assholes, those who are truly dangerous for coworkers would pass interview and get accepted by the author at any time. Such people are smart enough to not badmouth their former employers or coworkers.

Closing note is most important: act immediately and give feedback. Employers usually don't do that, because it would hurt their image of successful interviewer.

ghostdiver··on Google is building a Chrome app-based development environment
Chrome Apps did not work so far(zero traction), why do they want to waste ever more time on it?
ghostdiver··on The first Bitcoin post on HN
Perhaps it was posted during wrong time of the day or was crowd power pointed to front page.

It is also possible that people here on HN do not have enough intuition about ideas, which could possibly change the world just like bitcoin is doing it right now. It's fun to read retrospective posts here on HN, but apparently innovation starts elsewhere..

ghostdiver··on Why do yo use JavaScript-Libraries like jQuery?
Dependencies, unfortunately I am forced to use it, because it's just there in the code used by someone few years ago.

Plugins are not the reason and fortunately it is changing already, because UI/UX feature developers do not want to be jQuery plugin vendors anymore, they want to promote their stuff under their own brand.

ghostdiver··on Pair Programming (give it a rest)
The problem lies here:

> I don’t believe that I’m alone in my opinion. All of my colleagues are very similar. In my 20+ year long career, I’ve only known one person that I suspect would be comfortable with pair programming

So I can easily imagine that he was unlucky during his 20+ year career, because it is not easy to find such group of people especially in Age of Everyone Can Become a Programmer.

ghostdiver··on Ask HN: Google employees, why is G+ more important than your users?
Fortunately HN is not integrated with G+, yet!
ghostdiver··on New GPS game is out of this world: Stratocaching
Isn't it dangerous for aircrafts? What if some turbo jet engine sucks such seed inside?
ghostdiver··on Ruining the diversity of JavaScript community with a coding style guide
I don't think that using single quotes will ruin the diversity. This code style guide is all about some minor stuff, which is rather meaningless. After all this kind of things does not instant make code base good or bad.
ghostdiver··on Amazon Code Ninjas
How many of those tasks represent some real-world problem?
ghostdiver··on Extending JavaScript with inline unit tests
Among others(there are many contract implementations for js on github) this one is pretty average, not modern enough, not compatible with code which uses promises. Such implementation should go beyond direct arguments and result value of function call.
ghostdiver··on Extending JavaScript with inline unit tests
This technique is not called "Inline unit tests", it's called contract programming.

I can't imagine writing such code without proper support from IDE like automatic folding and/or special colors.

There is also problem of asynchronous code, events etc. Something that can't be covered with such simple contracts.

ghostdiver··on In Latvia, young people discover new passions in bad economic times
Germans had many allies during WWII, almost every country conquered by Germans had some "legion" in Werhmaht(name of german army), even in UK there was some nazi/german political party.
ghostdiver··on Ask HN: PHP vs. Node.js vs. Go for a new startup?
PHP is such a poor technology, however many great websites were build using it, so I would say that you should go with technology you know best.

PHP will rather never be a bottleneck itself, you can fuck up many other things like data storage. All modern data storage solutions come with PHP interface.

What's the point of doing this, why not just use Mozilla Rhino?

> And your logo looks like a $44/24hr logo.

You can find cheap made in volkswagen parts in AUDI cars too.

Even if it was $8/1hr logo no one would care if the final product was good enough.
