ghostberry··on Military technology: Laser weapons get real
You took "reflective" too literally. I just meant more reflective to IR than dark green paint that most military stuff gets painted with. I never meant a mirror surface. Just the IR equivalent of white paint.
ghostberry··on Military technology: Laser weapons get real
I can't help thinking that in the anti-mortar role, there are very simple countermeasures that would severely reduce the laser's effectiveness.

Reflective paint, ablative coatings, internal vacuum layer, heat insulation, thermally insensitive explosive and detonators, etc.

ghostberry··on Policing, Mass Imprisonment, and the Failure of American Lawyers
Out of interest, why do you think there are so many valid criminals and lawbreakers in the US?
ghostberry··on Adults' obsession with science fiction causing society to become infantilised
A bad case of rose tinted spectacles.
ghostberry··on Thoughtcrime
As the smaller party in a coalition, they got blamed for every unpopular decision and got no credit for anything popular.

ghostberry··on Denmark is inching closer to becoming cashless
How do you give money to a poor homeless person?
ghostberry··on Why an iron fish can make you stronger
I read this story a few months ago, it had a few more details then.

They tried giving them iron cookware, but they didn't like the weight. They then tried putting a random piece of iron in with their cooking, but not many kept up with doing it. That's where the idea to shape the iron like a lucky fish came from, and it seems to be working.

ghostberry··on Top Design Flaws in the Human Body: Our bodies are full of hack solutions
It's 7.5° high and 5.5° wide. If you don't consider that huge, then that's up to you. But for me, that counts as huge, especially since it's fairly near the middle of vision. That's over half the width of my hand at arms length.
ghostberry··on Top Design Flaws in the Human Body: Our bodies are full of hack solutions
That's just nature making the best it can of a historical accident.

If you were designing the eye from scratch, you'd have the nerves coming out the back like in squid. Then if you wanted something that concentrates the red and green wavelengths, you could put something else in front of the light sensing cells.

You'd end up exactly where you are now, except you'd not have a huge blind spot, and wouldn't have to spend as much brain power compensating for it.

ghostberry··on Estonia e-residency application now online
It really, really isn't.
ghostberry··on What's wrong with finance
There are always people thinking "Uh oh..."

Sometimes they are right.

ghostberry··on Job Postings Army MOS 31E – Internment Camp / Resettlement Specialist
"Internment/Resettlement (I/R) Specialists in the Army are primarily responsible for day-to-day operations in a military confinement/correctional facility or detention/internment facility. I/R Specialists provide rehabilitative, health, welfare, and security to U.S. military prisoners..."

ghostberry··on Robotic telescope discovers three super-earth planetary neighbors
A super Earth is a planet that's larger than Earth, but not large enough to be a gas giant.
ghostberry··on DNA is a fractal antenna in electromagnetic fields (2011)
Evidence trumps theory. A theory can be as clever as you like, but if it disagrees with the evidence, the theory is wrong.
ghostberry··on Death for stealing candles
By "most weren't really executed", are we talking 99%, 90%, 51%?
ghostberry··on The Mahler Project – The ZX Spectrum Orchestra [video]
Clock speed does not equal performance.

For instance, the Z80's fastest instructions took four cycles, where the 6502's fastest instructions took two cycles.

The Z80's slowest instructions took 23 cycles, and the 6502's slowest took seven cycles.

And even that comparison is over simplified.

I love her channel.

ghostberry··on World-record electric motor for aircraft
Out of interest, I looked up the motor used in the new Formula E racing cars. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spark-Renault_SRT_01E#Electric...

I'm sure there are details other than power and weight which makes a direct comparison unfair.

ghostberry··on The plane that can fly backwards
Modern missiles cannot be dodged. It's mostly just a way to show off the plane's agility. It could just barely be useful for shooting at a target behind you, but you sacrifice a lot of energy moving your aircraft like that.
ghostberry··on Centuries of Italian History Are Unearthed in a Quest to Fix a Toilet
The British Museum does a lot of work cataloguing artefacts so they're available for scientific study, as well as doing their doing their own research into techniques to date objects, preserve them or to figure out how they were made.

Private collectors would be unlikely to do the same.

ghostberry··on Black Arrow

ghostberry··on The 68000 Wars, Part 3: We Made Amiga, They Fucked It Up
One difference between Motorola and Intel, is Motorola was less concerned with breaking backwards compatibility.

If the 68k family had continued to evolve past the 1994s 68060, I'm sure they could have just dropped backwards compatibility to some of the more complex addressing modes, or just devoted less silicon to them, and making what remains faster. Kinda like happened with the ColdFire version of the 68k family.

ghostberry··on Can life exist on a planet without a star?
"To have any chance of life – at least life like our own – a free-floating Earth would need liquid water. And to have liquid water, a planet needs to keep warm."

Maybe, maybe not.

ghostberry··on 8088 MPH: We Break All Your Emulators
You could also go beyond that by changing the image 50/60 times a second, which would then blur together. Enabling you to display colours that aren't even in the ST's palette.
ghostberry··on Show HN: Is this puzzle too hard?
I thought it might be something like that. I've never been able to do them. I just find them frustrating and quit.

I do play various puzzle games, but I'm not a huge fan of this particular type. For me personally, it would put me off your game, especially if the failure to complete the puzzle stopped me progressing.

I can't speak for other people. I may just be weird.

ghostberry··on Show HN: Is this puzzle too hard?
I don't know if it's too hard, since I can't figure out what you're supposed to do.
ghostberry··on Why 'Cultural Diversity' in the Workplace Needs to Die
"What Happened To Finding The Best Person For The Job!?"

It never existed. Study after study has shown the gender and race implied by your resume massively impacts the chance of you getting a callback.
