gherig4··on What makes Germans so orderly?
It is a low effort comment, not necessarily a low value one. It summarizes people's response to it well.

Every aspect of German culture can be linked to WW2 without much effort and has been for decades. Here is a humorous look at this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MfFxoyxQAh4 instead of a sarcastic wikipedia link.

I do understand where you are coming from but sometimes you just have to let it go, as most others have done. WW2 ended in Germany over 75 years ago, people don't want to be reminded of it underneath a fun travel blog.

gherig4··on A Hierarchy of Engineering Values
What is Sinek's thesis statement? I don't think this answered the parent comment's question.
gherig4··on Tell HN: Interviewed with Triplebyte? Your profile is about to become public
Because they are pivoting which is a nice way of saying failing.

Now if this blows up there is an even bigger target on Ammon's back and he may be panicking. That or he is a scumbag. Could be both.

Lock-in to your platform sounds even worse than LinkedIn.

How long before we all get an apology email, "Upon careful reconsideration...", 72 hours?

gherig4··on Urbit for Normies
The first 7-8 paragraphs are about the author (Hint: I don't care.), the next few are a technical description. As a "normie" I'm not reading 15 paragraphs in to see how it can help me

As a consumer, what benefit does it provide to me? "Normies" are going to bounce way before they see what the answer is. Drop the derogatory term and tell me how this helps me from the start.

gherig4··on DeSpeak: Practice at public speaking
"We suck at public speaking" so what is the point of learning or practicing with you?
gherig4··on Back-of-the-envelope estimates of next quarter’s unemployment rate
You beat me to it. Regardless of how much you believe arguments from authority, The WHO has lost its place as an authority after their recent actions.
gherig4··on Coronavirus is not a good argument for quitting cash
It is good to see the one of the better ideas from ZeroHedge show up on "yc" :)
gherig4··on A Vacancy Has Been Detected (2019)
That email seems very human and reasonable and it did its job perfectly. It warned the student of a potential outcome and the student was able to act on that warning. The alternative of somebody moving in one day without warning would be the real fail case and that didn't happen.
gherig4··on Gender pay gap shrinks when companies disclose wages
I experienced this first hand and as a result I departed for greener pastures. Isn't diversity a great thing when it suppresses wages, no wonder all the big boys are pushing for it.
gherig4··on The Dark Side of Psychedelic
This is exactly how I like my psychedelics. New age bull with a side of content marketing.

Eric Garner wasn't choked to death. Even then, what does he have to do with conformity?
gherig4··on Django 1.11 Released
django-extensions is an automatic install for me with the shell_plus feature. They also support an admin FK autocomplete, http://django-extensions.readthedocs.io/en/latest/admin_exte...
gherig4··on Ask HN: I got duped into working on legacy code, should I leave?
You're getting some really angry and personal responses in this thread telling you to suck it up and clean up the code yourself as if thats the path all programmers have to take. Thats not true at all, many companies provide good opportunities for employees to grow within their role in a more positive manner. Cleaning up the codebase would make you a sucker. They lied to you and as you describe it continuing to work there sounds like career suicide. Don't do them a favor by putting in the extra hours and effort into cleaning up their mess (its not YOUR mess). Your time is valuable! By lying to you they are literally wasting your LIFE. Think about it that way and any guilt/obligations you have towards management goes away.

You make a mistake by taking the job but what is done is done. Now you know what questions to ask in interviews to make sure this never happens again. So, if you are unhappy put in the hours you are paid for and start looking. Thats the only way to get another job and change your situation. When you find an offer you like put in your notice and say thank you for the opportunity and keep it professional. Don't tell your boss that you're going to quit ahead of time, thats a great way to get fired because they wont want to train you anymore.

Look for a new job while pulling in your current paycheck. You were lied to from the start and you owe them nothing. Most of the new places will no have a problem with "job hopping" if you are honest and say you aren't working on what you were hired for. Relevant xkcd https://xkcd.com/1768/

gherig4··on Manifesto: Things we believe about hiring
I've gone through their process and these guys aren't any different from the rest of "them". I finished the problem within the allotted time but was then rejected. I have no problem with the rejection itself but in the feedback I was told that even though I finished it on time I didn't finish it fast enough. Thats the sort of vague moving the goalposts that I have NOT seen in most of my in person technical interviews and why all their blog posts and lofty goals should be taken with a huge grain of salt.

EDIT spelling
