ghempton··on I Hate My Smartphone
I agree with this.

At my house there are constantly three things on the coffee table: an Android smartphone, an iPad 2, and a Thinkpad. The iPad 2 was novel at first, but now everyone reaches for the Thinkpad first when they are sitting on the couch.

Also, (shameless plug) I wrote about my own experience without a phone here: http://codebrief.com/2011/06/living-untethered/, and came up with a similar conclusion.

ghempton··on "Algorithm" is not a four letter word
Algorithms for brogrammers.
ghempton··on Providing a better compensation model for the internet
Agreed.
ghempton··on Providing a better compensation model for the internet
The problem with all these tipping services is always traction. There is no pain point for the consumers of content that is going to drive them to install a bookmarklet like the one he suggests. This especially applies since all of these services are unknown.

I would love to see an already established player like Disqus attempt something like this.

ghempton··on Ultrabook: Intel's $300 million plan to beat Apple at its own game
I use an Air as my primary dev machine. I love it, but my allegiance has nothing to do with OS X. In fact, I would kill for a laptop with Air's form factor that was running Ubuntu as the primary OS.
ghempton··on Nasdaq ITCH
The hash function will still be O(l).
ghempton··on Amazon App Store: Rotten To The Core
Lots of larger studios actually pay to acquire installs of their app to get an initial placement on the charts and to drive organic growth from there. In that context, 101k new users for free is very valuable.
ghempton··on iCloud beta
Tried from Safari and Chrome on OS X Lion and it says I am not on OS X lion...
ghempton··on Open source graphic design
I really don't think this has to do with product quality. I just wrote a blog post on how broken design tools are: http://codebrief.com/2011/07/design-tools-are-broken/
ghempton··on Zynga's privacy policy
At least they are consistent. I level up on Empires and Allies by just randomly clicking as well.
ghempton··on Donating 8 hours design time to any project
You have a lot of options, but we would love some feedback on http://grouptalent.com
ghempton··on Dependency Injection for Android with Google’s Roboguice
I've used this on several android apps. It's a nice lib and keeps your code clean.
ghempton··on SlimGems, a drop-in replacement for RubyGems -- now available
Having not felt the pain, based on the website I really don't know why to switch. Guess I'll either wait for the incompatibility issues or a compelling reason.
ghempton··on Previewing Windows 8 (Video)
As long as you can stay inside the metro tiles if you want, what's the harm in allowing power user's to actually be productive?

Sure, some Apps will only be available as desktop apps at the start, but they will just function as low hanging fruit for developers.

ghempton··on What It's Like to be Recruited
The objective meant little: majority of the positions were for contract to hire and full-time.
ghempton··on WebP: A new image format for the Web
PNG had similar issues with browser adoption. The huge thing about WebP for me is it's support for transparency (which it was planned to support last time I checked).
ghempton··on Pagoda goes in private beta - Heroku for PHP
sounds a lot like https://www.phpfog.com/
ghempton··on GroupTalent - Hire Effective Teams. Not Individuals.
Yes, there definitely is. We are trying to structure the team profiles to capture types of experience like this.
ghempton··on Scientists Achieve Optical Invisibility
I was hoping for some pictures but....
ghempton··on GroupTalent - Hire Effective Teams. Not Individuals.
No strict requirements, just technology focused.
ghempton··on GroupTalent - Hire Effective Teams. Not Individuals.
Appreciated the feedback.

* I agree and we will most certainly add this feature.

* Currently we manually approve all teams and companies. After you submit you can still edit your team so no worries. We will think about the flow.

* Profiles are something we are going to be constantly iterating on and we'll think of something to make situations like that smoother.

ghempton··on GroupTalent - Hire Effective Teams. Not Individuals.
Will look into this. Did you use oauth?

ghempton··on Mark Suster on Seattle and how a few key people can transform a community
I graduated from UW's CSE program, worked at Microsoft full-time, and then quit Microsoft to do YC. I don't think the students at UW are averse to startups, I think there is just a lack of presence and exposure to those types of options. It wasn't until I lived with someone who went to Berkeley that I even knew that hacker news existed.
ghempton··on A common bug in published code
Majority of these results are examples and test cases which is probably why the bugs have not manifested themselves.
ghempton··on HTML + CSS3 is Turing complete
Thats a cool premise for a meetup. Wish there was one in Seattle.
ghempton··on Ask HN: Do you know Photoshop?
Firework's preference for objects over layers is what is key here. It drastically increases my productivity and allows graphics to be much more mutable than Photoshop.
ghempton··on Rietveld - code review Google style
Anyone know why google is so committed to perforce?
ghempton··on Object Oriented CSS
Would be really nice to see some actual code right up front. It's hard to grok exactly what this is right off the bat.
ghempton··on Fred Wilson's Nexus S Review
All he said was that there is a higher learning curve to the bottom buttons and that purchasing apps was slightly more difficult. All of this was in self-contained in a single paragraph.
