ghawk1ns··on Graze Joins Flipboard
Hi to my x-colleagues who did not expect to see Flipboard when they opened up HN this morning :)

Congrats to the current team, excited to see where this goes as FB coalesces the social web

ghawk1ns··on Never Update Anything
There is humor in this blog itself has 2 updates
ghawk1ns··on Threads users down by more than a half
> It’s becoming increasingly obvious that Twitter isn’t going to be that place with each new chaos monkey attack from Musk

Is this hyperbole? Twitter will be fine, Musk isn't going to train-wreck 10s of billions. Twitter today isn't even that fundamentally different from pre-Musk. The biggest change has been perception from ideological extremes. I'm sure Twitter will evolve but evolution is for growth, not death.

You use Twitter for exposure to writers, wouldn't the proposed lifting of the character limit be a net positive for writers? Wouldn't writers use Twitter more if writing on Twitter was a source of income?

ghawk1ns··on The $20 an hour Cessna 172 experiment (2020)
That's innovation in my book. Nothing wrong with trying to reduce your costs while improving emissions, especially when we're talking about 30+ year old technology.
ghawk1ns··on Dagger: a new way to build CI/CD pipelines
Dagger is already a popular dependency injection framework, so why choose a name that will be confusing to people who will likely use both of these frameworks in their projects?
ghawk1ns··on Pilot FriXion Erasable Pens: A Comprehensive Guide
So how does this work if you live in a hot part of the world, and say, you leave your notebook in your car for the day.... does all your work simply vanish?
ghawk1ns··on Show HN: DontBeEvil.rip: Search, for developers (API, expressions, CLI)
You can try with a function to simplify the cli:

$ rip() { curl -G -H 'Accept: text/plain' --url https://dontbeevil.rip/search --data-urlencode 'q=$@'}

$ rip heartbleed bug

ghawk1ns··on How High Will California's Taxes Go Before There's No One Left to Tax?
Does that "savings" outweigh the increased cost from the tax? Because it's less important how much that value is and more important that overall cost and burden will increase.

Will California outlaw company provided health plans? If the company option is better, why would an employee want a worse Government solution?

In other, completely unrelated news, Meta just leased out the tallest building in Austin, Tx.

ghawk1ns··on Optimizing Your Wife
How does this contend with other optimal stopping problems? I just started reading 'Algorithms to Live By' and the very first chapter talks about the 37% rule [1], which feels similar. According to The Dating Problem [2] I should reject the first 37 candidates (when N=100 like in OP's example)

So do I reject the first 9 or 37 candidates?

ghawk1ns··on The Greedy Doctor Problem
Proof of Stake could work here.

Doctor locks up money under contractual obligation. If they act dishonestly and your health declines, they lose their stake.

As long as they act honestly, they are rewarded.

ghawk1ns··on Ask HN: Does Apple Pinch and Zoom use AI to enhance a video?
For Context: This question came up in the ongoing Kyle Rittenhouse trial today. The prosecution wanted Kyle to give testimony to a piece of video evidence, but it was to be played on an iPad and zoomed in on using the Pinch-to-Zoom feature. The defense objected with the concern that there could be algorithm(s) that alter the video in a way that could change small details

This is important because the video in question had to do with Kyle's weapon and where it was pointed taken from a drone footage far away, any alteration by an algorithm could misrepresent the few pixels that represented said weapon.

ghawk1ns··on Making the dislike count private across YouTube
Twitter users solved this with the "ratio"
ghawk1ns··on Twitter Blue is now available in the US and NZ
Who said the data-harvesting would stop?
ghawk1ns··on An update of 455 new words
How can I see a list of of all the newly added words? The blog only lists ~30 of them?

Does Merriam Webster use a form of Version-Control to track changes do their dictionary? It seems like versioning is a good use-case for a language information service.

I'd like to get the diff of how definitions and examples to words have changed over time, and perhaps why those changes were accepted.

ghawk1ns··on AWS DeepComposer
It doesn’t require the physical keyboard. The AWS console has a virtual keyboard, that should work for developers who want to learn about GAN but a musician will get the best experience with a physical keyboard. It should work with other MIDI controllers though only the AWS keyboard is officially supported
ghawk1ns··on Bitcoin Rally Fuels Market in Crypto Derivatives
I'm curious to hear your reasons for PoC being superior to PoS. I don't have a strong opinion, but PoS seems really compelling: If I have more to lose then I have to gain, than dishonestly is simply not profitable.

PoC feels more efficient than PoW (I'm not familiar with the details though) but still requires a massive amount of physical resources and computation compared to PoS.

ghawk1ns··on Amazon stores Alexa transcripts indefinitely
It's not that interesting unfortunately. You can physically delete all of your recordings at any time at https://www.amazon.com/alexaprivacysettings

All of that data is wiped when you initiate a delete request under GDPR.

ghawk1ns··on Software Below the Poverty Line
Does Electron have another revenue stream that isn't accounted for here? Are the full-time employees paid a wage above the poverty line? If so then yeah, this doesn't make sense.

But I think the sentiment isn't trivializing, that 1 child out of 7 might have a parent who works on one of these projects.

ghawk1ns··on Palantir wins competition to build Army intelligence system
I interned for the contractor that had the original defense contract, it's basically a suite of tools for intelligence gathering / aggregation and asset tracking, among other things. It's mostly in the public domain, not as nefarious as you'd expect
